Nice pic! I've always been a big fan of Cadillac's mirror-like chrome wheels. Looks like a mid 90s model, right?

World's fattest Accord fourdoor. Of course, the Accord is faster and built better. Then there are the 97 Northstars that burn so much oil that owners are convinced they are two stroke designs.

Try the Cadillac forums. Maybe they'll be impressed.

ummm, the STS is a 4 dr. the eldorado is the coupe.wow, you can tell its a pre 96 model?!? I'm lucky I can still tell the difference between a STS and SLS!

Back in 1994, my Dad had a chance to pickup a 92 STS. Instead he got a new Chrysler LHS. Well a few years later, after totalling the LHS in a 10mph rear end accident, he realized the STS was a much better value

Definitely.....

I live on a cadillac forum, so I know my cadillac...

Easy way to tell between STS and SLS is the STS has a painted grille with the emblem on the grille, the SLS has a chrome grille with a ornament on top, hood ornament if you will.....

I've always liked that boby style. If the were only rear drive. Hey Wes, what do you think of the new STS that's coming out next year. Read Aug 04 Car & Driver.

werd. Northstar, Southstar, Eaststar or whatever star. GM's suck. They run fine when they're less than 3 years old but after that, drive at your own risk and become very good friends with your tow truck driver.

I had to valet park at a big downtown Hyatt in Chicago. By the time I finished my gig the east garage where I was parked was shut down and very quiet. A guy came by to get my J and disappeared into the bowels of this giant structure. The car was parked in the basement and this guy comes roaring up.

Man! I thought my J sounded like a piece of crap. Noisey and crass. I thought, "Well, having 140k on a motor is bound to affect it."

Then the car comes up. It's not my J! It's a brand new plasticy Grand Am. I wait another 15 minites for the guy to go back to get my keys, etc. This time when he comes flying up the ramp, the J sounds beautiful. Whew!

The guy lost his tip for all the waiting.

Louie, RE: the new STS.....

I think that it is a phenominal car... If you think it looks to much like the CTS, look at BMW, mercedes, etc... They're all the same.. I ahve a feeling it will be restyled......

I love the new northstar, I have high hopes for it, with VVT... its just now making as much power as our VH45DE's

The car is really going to have to prove itself if its gonna be a sucess... Its pretty pricey (61k I think) and for that you can get a LOT of car (you could get a M45 and a Hyndai elantra for that)...

All the reviews Ive read they have been very impressed with it, the fit and finish, quality of materials, etc...

I think this car is a direct and good competitor for the M45 and Q45......

Come on guys, the Caddy bashing sounds/looks like Honda bashing I've seen elsewhere, can't we simply admire it for what it is. I don't think he meant to say it was a better car, if so he was asking for it :D.

I dont care what you **think** the northstar is a great engine.. Superior to the VH45, no, but you can respect it for what it is...

Its not a moving pile of garbage, its smoother than the VH45 and they actually were smart and put decent gears behind it, which infiniti did not... Its a good engine, and if taken care of will last nearly as long as any other enigne out there......

Wes,

VERY true.. however calling it more smooth may be stretching it.. It's not as high revving, it's designed to make more power down low... The VH is much more comfortable at higher revs then the northstar, but they make power in different power bands..

My friend and his dad have owned a ton of caddys... The first gen STS's were nice, but the build quality hadn't quite yet arrived..

Now check out a 98+ The interior fit/finish was completely redone, the internals changed... I drove/got driven from oregon to AZ in a 98, and it was a very very nice road car.. Magneto Suspension really helped out leveling that big fwd boat.

I drove an eldo for about a summer.. It was the floaty non ETC.. Still a nice car.. very easy to drive.. you could one finger the steering wheel.

Not much of a drivers car, but a very nice solid car to drive/be driven in

The 98s didnt get the magnetic suspension, that came just recently.. They redesigned their CVRSS (continuously variable road sensing suspension)

I disagree, I feel that Northstar was just as comforatable at high revvs..... Silky smooth doesnt hardly feel like its going at all......

Alright, time to settle the confusion. It a 1993 Cadillac STS.

I had a long post typed up, but my comp crashed.

Long story short, my dad picked up this STS with only 70k on the odometer for only 4k. 4km now that is a really big steal I think. At the time, I had looked at the blue book value (the car is still in excellent condition) and it was valued at around 11k.

We got the car friom my uncle (RIP) and he had asked my dad on an opinion on a new car. Naturally my dad said an STS (my uncle hated Japanese vehicles, he was a WWII vet, and was pretty racist)

As it stands right now, these are the things we have had to have changed.Spark plugs/wiresWater PumpFuel pumpmotor mountstires of coursethats it I think

The interior is tan and the leather is in spectacular condition. The paint is unbelievable and looks like its soaking wet at some times. Those chrome wheels that are on it now are the stock ones. I have been visiting the site http://www.chrfab.com dreaming of something to do with the Northstar.

Another thing I heard, which I don't know if its true, but I heard the Northstar has the ability to run on 4 cylinders if there isnt enough fuel or something like that.

I want to put some Advan SA3Rs on it (with red lip):D

The car is running like a champ with 160k miles on it. Being that we lived with my uncle, and my dad was the main person thast took care of the car, we know that it was taken car of. It's a beautiful thing when my dad stomps on it, you get thrown back to your seat.

oh yeah, its a rare occasion when my dad lets me take it out for a spin.

I think youre referring to the limp home mode (correct me on this Wes if I'm wrong). If the car is critically low on coolant or if there is some kind of major cooling failure, it will deactivate (or alternate?) cylinders so you can drive 50 miles to a service station.

I have to say I have been a fan of caddy's for a long time.

My father had a 77 seville. Nice car and ran like a champ.

As far as build quality, his car felt very stable at 20 years old.

I still like the sts from 92. I also like the look of the updated ones in 98.

Gm just has a bad rap but the new sts with the awd capability is a thing of beauty. A friend of mine who works at the dealer gave me the catalogue to look at and I love it.

The keyless ignition, auto windows up and down, magnetic suspension, speakers in the seats!!!

This car is going to change alot of peoples minds about caddy.

It even comes with an option of different gearing.

Caddy has finally stepped up to the rwd plate.

The limp home mode runs on 4 cylinders, using the other 4 as an air pump...

this is if it looses coolant or goes to super hot... if yo umake it to limp home mode, you get to limp home and get a new enigne...... Limp home starts at like 270*F (maybe 250).. whatever the case is, its crazy hot, and risk serious damage.....

The 93-95 look nearly identical... theres a different steering wheel for 94, 94 and 95 are nealry indistiguishable.....

Come on Wes - which 8 cylinders would you trust for HOURS of hi (110+) speed cruising ? ? ? - And THAT my friend - is the dif between a fine bit of high-end Teutonic or Japanese engineering - you do NOT hear tales of hours of hi speed running by domestic metal - most Americans, incl. the Nstar, just don't cut it at sustained running !

All maintenance being equal (Aggressively overdone a-la Q45tech) - which would you prefer under the hood for a Xcountry run ?

JMHO

And don't get me wrong, I've always appreciated the SLS/Eldo body - but FWD hooking that Hp up - Bwaaa-haaaa-haaaaaaaaaaa

I've always liked the styling of that car, even more so the ETC... An ETC in pearl or black is SO sexy.

The Northstar is a great engine, many hot rodders are using it these dfays. It's not a cross-country hauler, and I'd certainly prefer the VH after 100K miles, and FWD sucks fanny.

Wonder what the NS looks like inside after 100K? Curious as to whether it'd be WEAR-FREE at that age.

The Northstar, being a racing engine, really doesnt have issues with high RPMs and aggressive driving. Yeah, I'd certainly enjoy it for 8 hours at 110mph.

FWD feels like crap though (sorry Maxima guys). But thats all in the past now with the new STS, and its about damn time.

Personally, I'd kind of prefer a softer car to go across the country in if that involves covering the horrible highways in the midwest and south.

But with my mix of twisting roads and straight interstate runs, my 'old' Q45 gets the job done exceptionally well.
