Skater shoes = too large sole
The objective of a good driving shoe is to make itself invisible. Added thickness anywhere (including the tongue) is bad. The only thing the shoe is there for is pedal grip, fire protection, and to a small degree so that you dont cut up your feet when you have to get out of the car. If its comfortable walking around in, it isnt a proper driving shoe.
To me driving with bare feet is just a bad idea (aparently so does the state of pennsylvania, since it is against the law here), because it usually means a pair of something sitting on the floor a few inches from the pedals. When the crap hits the fan, the last thing you want is for something to lodge itself between the brake pedal and the floor. This is the same reason you are required to take your floormat out for autocross. No amount of foot trickery will save you when your flipflop desides to wander where it shouldnt.
