I'm a chick so my insurance is pretty cheap, 89 240sx about $50-$60 Geico liability/uninsured motorists. I'm 21 now, but its been the same for a while.
In high school I worked at various hobby shops $6.50/hr + got money working on customer's RC trucks. Just worked and saved, worked and saved; wasn't too into cars at the time and didn't have bills to pay so I bought myself a $4k video camera and started a business. Would get about $400 per 2-3 minute video, and about $200 over my costs on event DVD sales. That only happened a few times, then I had to stop traveling so much.
Now I work at Office Max as a desktop publisher/graphic designer ($7/hr since I can't work full 40hr week and be a supervisor, f'd up huh? Plus the silly little 'spiffs' and other incentives OM gives). Still have my business, but take more photos than video now and still don't have time to travel much. Just pay the bills, keep the upkeep on my daily cars, and put the rest of the $ into my drift 240sx.
Try to see what skills you have and try to get a job using them first, if not work wherever you can without going insane. If you are spending money on your car...make sure to do it only once and get good parts the first time.
