if you actually go to a drift event you'll realize theres a lot of miatas running. Miata's have always been known for their handling, so why not.

I would think that they would toss to easily and be too unstable.

Why would you think that?

A stock Miata will OWN a stock 240 on a road course.... Oh, wait, we're talking about drifting, which means no handling proficiency required. :rolleyes

lol, i think the miata would be insanely unstable at high speed drifts...but if properly controlled, could be much faster than any drift car you've seen before lol...think about how much less friction is carried through the slide jsut because of pure weight...

miatas are friggin KILLER!! very tossable, very responsive, a little too cramped for me to sit comfortably in. Be that as it may, I'm seriously considering purchasing the late '90s model down the road from me. All in all, a very capable and responsive trackday tool!!

What Smitty and AZ have said are both true as can be. I have a very good friend that is a very capable SCCA driver (won his class last year in Indy Region). He drives a '90 Miata that is mildly modded and he destroyed me and my 240 in an Austrailian Pursuit last summer. Of course, I destroyed him in every drag race we ran, but he only has a 1.6L engine.

They would really be a lot of fun if I were six inches shorter...;)

rb26dett in a MIATA? talk about shoe-horning and engine in!how is that POSSIBLE!?

as far as them being 'gay'. they're not. they're real roadsters in the sense of the word. i got to sit in one at a dealer lot, where they left the keys in all the doors of the cars. i started it, and man, did it sound nice (for a 1.6.. woo!) i just wish i could've drove it.i think they received the 'gay' stigma because it has 'cute' appeal and a lot of people get them for superficial reasons. but they are definitely road-course worthy, and super autocross monsters.

Ha. I've seen a 5.0L V8 in an early model Miata in person. The guy had to get a new hood made to allow for clearance. If that's possible, I think a RB26DETT would be easy.

yeh they sell a 5.0 swap plans and parts. Last I remember was people having suspension probelms due to the extra weight.

Yeah, once you do a 5.0L swap in those you can kiss your balance and good handling goodbye.

so then it's possible...but the question would be: why would you?since you destroy the rest of the car's characteristics.eh. people just swap in 1.8 protege' motors, or put superchargers/turbos on 'em and that makes them fast enough.and .. makes more sense.

Don't ask me why they do what they do. I'm just saying it's possible.

okay in an answer to everyone's question miata's suck at drifting!!! a friend of mine from my car club has one and we took it to the drift showoff at irwindale and it was humiliating to see him out there. he actually has a turboed 13B in it and its so fast on the straights and at autocross events but cant do anything in actual drifting. im not saying all miatas are like this just this is the experience ive had with drifting one.

hey i was at that drift showoff, and to tell you the truth i didnt see one miata drift... they all got to much oversteer and spun out, but i guess with enough experience and skill you could do it..

that's quite a blanket statement!! with enough experience and skill, just about any good driver can *drift* just about any miata.

what i tried to imply was that with enough "experience and skill" they very well could drift that or any car, why not a miata? oh what does a blanket statement refer to?

Drifting does take some suspension setup, and most miatas aren't set-up to drift. If you put in the time to getting your suspension right(and maybe slapped on a turbo) there shouldn't be any problem at drifting a miata, although, you really don't see many of them at drift events(at least the ones I've seen on video) it's usually 240s and AE86s with the occasional MR2, Supra, or Skyline thrown in(although the Supras and Skylines are darn rare this side of the pond)
