Actually, there is not such thing as TOO smart. And yes, it's the former, not the latter (I don't have that much cash). I almost had a job building the things, but found a higher paying job dispatching for alarms instead. And really, there are only two physical possesions I really care to have in this world. One is a car--already have that, and a damn good one at that. The other is a very nice computer. I don't have that anymore. The one listed way at the top of this thread was actually my whole family's computer. And when I moved into my own apartment last month, I had to leave it there. So, without ANY computer at all (aside from my POFS PIII 500mhz Dell that can barely even boot up anymore, my 80286, my 80486, my P 90, and my pre-windows Toshiba--none of which do me any good aside from making me look like the geek I am) I am in trouble. How am I supposed to attend college without a computer? And I even need email access for work now. Plus, as mentioned above, I am a computer geek. Not a geek as in thick glasses and a button down shirt and pocket protector. Geek as in I enjoy computers as much as I enjoy cars--which is a lot.No one turns to the guy who bought one of the very few R34 400R's and says, "you have too much money" or "you know too much about cars." And that car costs upwards of $90,000!!!So, being a person who actually needs a computer, and being a person who enjoys computers and video games, and being a person who has only rent and insurance and Comcast cable internet to pay for--well those and food and gas--I think a top end computer is a reasonable thing. Especially since buying this computer means I'll be safe for at least 5 years before needing a new one, so that will actually be cheaper than a crap computer now and a crap computer in two years, then another, and another....

However, the computer is a little further off than I intended, since I had to get emergency work done on my car that cost me $200.

I'm curious to hear what it is you have to say. If it's about the new high speed PCI stuff, I know, I know. And by the time I can actually afford this PC (by the looks of it now, a while) that will be available.Have you only got internet access at work, and that's why you have to wait till thursday? Don't worry, I won't have it by then.

no no, i do have internet access at home, but no time. try taking discrete math applied towards comp scien and some gay as$ western art general requirement classes for the semester; you'll see what i mean.

congratulations for going to college. it'll be best rewarding years of your life, depending how you manage everything, just do it wisely. Hope you chose a good hard major, something in math, science, or medical or lawyer stuff. if any questions regarding college strategies, ask me.

If you need a computer, good one for school that'll last, get one with fastest cpu and 512mb high speed ram. If u need it for school and be productive, do not, i repeat do not build a monster gaming machine. It will affect your grades.

But then again for geeks like us, we gotta have monster pc, so who's listening. If youre gonna spend at least $1500, and if you can wait 2 months then:

I would get motherboard compatible with SLI, basically 2 pci express slots. one 16x, 2nd one running at 8x. so u can plug in 2 cheap 6800gt's and have a real monster pc. or simply order one from alienware for about $5000 bucks. he he, good investment.

besides for this generation of graphic cards, nvidia is winning. and YES, be quiet!! it is winning. don't believe me, then check out the this mnths Maximum PC magazine. they benchmarked ati and nvidia cards. nvidia's 6800 gt is abt 20% faster than every ati card except x800 XT. BUT obviously 6800 ultra is faster by a small margin than x800 XT.-------------------------------------------------so, for $1500 you sould be able to get:

mainboard supporting SLI

two nvidia 6800 gt's

pentium chip >3.2 ghz

audigy 2 zs-------------------------------------------------

since u lost your other monster pc, then i bet you'll need all extra stuff like drives, power supply, case and small crap like that. if u need to save money go with CRT monitor 19" w/high refresh rate(so u can use 3D glasses at decent resolution)=====================================================

OR

MY ADVISE IS, FORGET WHAT I JUST SAID ABOVE. AND SPEND THAT $1500 TO GET A DECENT NOTEBOOK WITH LONGEST BATTERY LIFE AVAILABLE. GET intel PENTIUM MOBILE CHIP/512RAM/INTELPRO 2200 WireLESS CHIP/AVERAGE GRAPHIC CARD 64MB/ IN OTHER WORDS WHAT THEY CALL THIS COMBINATION, CENTRINO TECHNOLOGY.

GET A NOTEBOOK IF U JUST STARTED COLLEGE, YOU WILL THANK ME LATER!! make sure it has longest battery life!!

You konw i did built a monster overclocked pc, and now, i have soo much to do at school that, games do not interest me anymore. so i could've put that money towards good productive fast laptop than some gaming machine.

Besides it is good to be geek and still keep decent look in college. Chicks dig geeks. Be one of the top guys in your class and see how many chicks will turn to you for some help in physics and math.

you will get more as$ that way than any other good looking dumb stud.

Ahhh, yes, discrete math. Now I see. And I'm majoring in physics, specifically fluid dynamics and particle physics. I might also major in linguistics. Not sure how well they would coincide.

And yeah, I do have to have a monster gaming machine...I'll just have to find some self-control somehow...I'll burn that bridge when I come to it.

As for the video cards, I'm finally convinced. I just got my PC Gamer(sister pub to Maximum PC) and they reviewed what I beleive are the same two cards. I just might have to get a GeForce (I'll use an Nvidia card, but I'll never realy convert...I've just had too many great ATI cards...plus, as DOOM 3 is optimized for the GeForce, HL2 is Radeon optimized. And basically, once I get HL2, it'll be the only game I care about for a while. DOOM 3 and GTA:SA will just have to be patient and wait for their turn.

I hope I will be able to afford SLI...I'd love to run dual cards at those speeds!!! But if I can't, at least the SLI's existence will cause AGP prices to drop.

I have a notebook, its a PIII 500. It needs to be reformatted though...caught something bad...screwed up the network recognition and a lot of other stuff--including windows itself at some very base levels, I think it corrupted the kernel, since its about the only thing I haven't played with--stupid lockout!!! I kept the thing running well enough to get me through last semester, but I'm not sure how much longer It'll last me. Good thing I made sure they gave me the Windows CD with it. After being stuck with that thing, I don't think I could ever make myself buy another Intel chip. My P 200 MMX runs--ran...it got butchered when my parents new PC needed a zip drive and monitor--more stable (stable-ly? stabley?...Whatever...I don't care right now), and will do nearly everything the PIII can. A good way to get around the pricey battery problem is to go to your local used PC store and ask them if they have any broken laptops of your type with batteries you can have. I got one from a local store (a four hour) for $20.

Thanks for the advice on college. My biggest problem is memory. I never remember to do things. It's not even video games vs. classwork, I just don't remember to do it. It's cost me in the past bigtime; I don't intend to let it do so again.

And I won't be able to simply upgrade my old monster PC. It belonged to my parents, and I moved near the campus and didn't get to take it with me. Right now I am using my roommates 2.1 ghz Athlon XP 2600+, and the thing is about to explode--no viruses, nothing diagnosable, it just seems poorly made; but then, it did only cost him $800. Plus, his Radeon 9600 is starting to show its age. And there's just something wierd about using another guy's PC, you know. When we are both in school next semester, this won't work...that's why I need a computer so badly.I just hope I can afford tuition AND a PC...good thing I have a cheap apartment.

no i major in computer science and software engineering but thats one of mid classes taht i have to take to kill enougn brain cells. this class is just a pain in the *** plus instructor has chinese accent, but he is brilliant. having toruble comprehending material or it takes a bit time before it kicks in.

about being able to afford SLI, you will! just buy one 6800gt and if u need extra horsies later, just get another one, which will be way cheaper and plug it in to almost double your performance.

like i said, dont geta gaming pc. get a good, thin laptop (you will thank me way more than u could imagine later)or build it yourself. im dreaming that i was a chief engineer at Sony so I could make liquid cooled very thin, high speed overclocked gaming laptop with longer battery life and performance when needed.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

oh my friend, with that major in college, you will be killing more brain cells than extreme alcoholic. I took my last physics, 2 semesters ago. it was advanced univ physics 2. we mostly revolved around relativity, but in problems we had to use at least 20 variables and 20-40 minutes to solve a single fkng problem. EVery monday we had a quiz, after the quiz i had a heahache, and i had to get drunk to relax mentally afterwards. I got B in course, but i could've gotten an A, if i started early to study let say.LEMME put it this way, its gonna be hard and FUN and rewarding.

also, y did u move outta parents house? i blieve at this point of my life, paying $200 towards family med. insurance is way less than paying > $400 in apartment fees. then again, i dont know your situation.

in college avoid parties, just avoid them. avoid kids who trying to be cool. lol. stick with geek people,(i meant normal geeks) and replace your low IQ girlfriend with intelligent and okay looking chick. yah babe, yah!!

I found a really well priced apartment that isn't trashy, and get insurance very cheap through my new job. I still live only about 10 minutes from my parents house, and I'm there all the time when I'm not at work. I just wanted my own place.

As for parties, well I'm about as antisocial as people get, so that's not a problem. I hate parties. Bunch of people I've never met doing things I'm too smart to do. For similar reasons (mostly the antisocial thing) I have no girlfriend. But hey, I have more time to myself. Or, if I wanted to sound like I was as practical as I should be, more time for school. Yes, that's it.

I am majoring in physics because I want to go into the newly arising private aerospace sector. If only I were 10 years older, I could have gone for the X-Prize!!! I have ideas on how to fix the problems NASA is having with their Ion propulsion systems. At least, I think I do.

go for something in stem cell research area. so you can engineer your own hotty girlfriend.

oh, parties have gotten so repetitive these days, just go there, people, big kids who still say "oh man, thats so cool" or "suck me beautiful" type of intelligence with hyper sex hormones.

you know, knowledge is power, its proven in every department.

how would u feel if hottest girl in 400 student class, comes and talks to you and you go out with her, rest of gay *** whole class studs are ignored due to their lack of intelligence. he he. i say it feels good.

oh f.uck, while im writing this my colleague here is whining about his personal problems and i have to listen and say yes, uhuh... damn it, stfu!

anywayss, good luck with school. try to be best of the best.

I don't need stem cell research to create the perfect girl for me. She exists. Problem is, she's taken. Ah, well, at least I can still consider her a friend.

HAHA you have to listen to people's personal problems. My roommate, and good friend, who posts--rarely--here as Bweep, knows that I don't give a damn. Right dude?

--Very off topic--

Closer to the beginning of this thread (and, indeed, closer to the original purpse of the thread...but then no thread retains much singular purpose for long in this particular forum...unless that purpose is p0rn) someone suggested that I keep a look out for them on XBox live. Well, I have an XBox, and as soon as I get my internet working...within a week most likely...I'll be online. No Halo though, as they suggested. Not wasting that money a second time. I will, however, be playing Mech Assult and Steel Battalion. Most likely, my Gamertag will be MinisterofDOOM, since I do own the rights to that name, so it's pretty much guaranteed for me.

MinisterofDOOM, at this point i dont know what to do?

well waht should i do? im lost, i need a break. can't take this math class anymore. too much theories, too much...

they just upgraded universities wireless network to 54mbps 100% coverage everywhere, and only thing i do is transfer my project files to instructors, surf net and thats it.

WHERE THE HELL IS HALF LIFE 2? WHERE IS IT?

DO U HAVE ANY UPDATES ON THAT?

my pals gaming souls have died. you can see it in their eyes. this is sad. I tell ya, its gonna double suicide rate in campus

septemebr 30th deadline has passed for HL2, do you have any new info about that?--------------------------------also, my last-gen monster pc is acting up. every time i start power hungry applications(mostly games), i get a nvidia driver popup saying that graphic clock speeds has been decreased due to insufficient power to avoid damage to the hardware. can play, but get lower frame rates of course.(p43.2ghz/800bus/1024 ddr400/5950ultra/audigy2zs)

i really hope it is my power supply, since i bough it really cheap for $25 (450watts) off pricewatch.

i wonder what happened to that guy, who would be hyped up every time something went wrong with his pc. time changes everyone. now i dont have even time to troubleshoot simple hardware glitch. sucks.

anyhow, if u have ever experienced such thing, or know good power supply tester, let me know.=====================================================

Ahh Half Life 2. Yeah, I know a little about it. I've done everything I can to find out what I can about it. Here is what I know:

Current official release date is November 1 (if I remember right--I've had the game reserved since august of '03!!)

The game will include the original Half Life, re-built in the Source (HL2) engine. It will also include CounterSrike, rebuilt in Source.

Mulitplay consists of standard deathmatch and CS. I don't recall hearing anything about Team Fortress 2 being shipped with the game.

I could go into a lot more details, but I assume you have heard at least some of the news about it. I picked up a DVD from the local Game Stop which contains a whole assload of E3 videos and footage, including some really good HL2 videos and announcements.

The Havok physics engine will have all the ragdoll, real world physics that are the standard in games today (and would have been MADE so by HL2, had it come out on time) The most intersting and explorable aspect of this being what has been dubbed, unofficially, the "Gravity Gun" which allows Freeman to manipulate objects many times his weight and throw them around (I can think of some fun things to use that for).

I am not sure, but seem to recall, that the game will have something that was once a huge idea in FPS's, and kinda went away: deformable terrain.

Also, a cool thing I discovered is that the lip-synching system is entirely dependent upon waveform. This means that modders and custom map-makers can simply input their own .wav files as the speech, and the character model will automatically (and amazingly acurately--something it's about time they accomplished!) lip synch to the audio.

As for the downloading for classes, that's what my Computer Science class was like last semester. We each had a terminal with a zip 250 drive and firewire and USB. I had a 128mb USB card dealy, so all I did was download stuff and surf the web. The only assignment the whole class was to gradually build a web page using what we learned over the course of the class. I had mine done the first week, and spent the time surfing. I passed just fine. It sure made my other classes seem more boring though.

As I was reading your video card problem, even before I finished reading it, my first thought was "power supply." I'm pretty sure that's it. Was the card ever overclocked? It's possible that any component of the computer died and is drawing excess power, starving everything else.

no, theres no way a hardware is burned on my watch. even when badly overclocked.

besides i took care of it. finally i got up my lazy ***, took me 2 secs to pop the hood of pc and took me 20 secs to find the problem. so much for troubleshooting.

as we know today's exotic video cards require extra power connector, and on my 5950 it was loose. so even a liltle overall hardware activity could have caused variations in current thus nvidia driver clocked it down to save its ***. i just plugged it all the way in, and it works like a charm. he he..

college sucks, downtown sucks, everybody sucks. i wait for 3 months to save 150 bucks on a laptop and this week i received 2 f.u.c.k.ing parking tickets totaling $135. do u know how it feels after class tired coming and finding that piece of green **** on your windshield? and trust me, I'm maybe stupid, but im not dumb. i konw where to park. its just these tricky parking signs. im not gonna let it past that easy, this time im gonna fight. 135 bucks, you konw i didn't buy biology book this semester becuase it costs $130, how ironic.

oh, hope youre right with the next release date for HL2. i 'm simply not going to buy it, because VALVE sucks too. I wanted that game last year or at least this summer. I dont think im gonna spend any money on that, but i will still play it. he he.and god, i saw sooooo many HL2 movies. I've seen every freaking image quality presentation movies down to level design mpegs from valve. i got a whole cd full of it. so far only thing that really TURNS ME ON is perfectly rendered refractive water. "Dude, electromagnetic spectrum is bent when entering the second medium when its denser than the first one. sweeeeeeeet!" lol

farcry had refractive water and it was okay for far cry, since it was the best eye candy at the time. but it was bad for my taste.

HL2 renders it perfectly. it will have the water physics of callof duty and water texture quality of far cry, i believe.

p.s. i need to get laid, im too stressted at the moment you know any good bishez?

I hear you on the parking ticket deal. My first semester at Weber (the little pathetic excuse for a University that I attend) they were paving three different parking lots--DURING THE FALL SEMESTER!! They couldn't have done it during the summer, when nearly no one attends at the main campus. So people parked wherever. At the time, I had a POS Ford Ranger, rather than the Maxima I drive now. One of the parking lots still available for use was bordered by a hill. Lots of cars were parked on the curb there, and trucks and jeeps partway up the hill. This particular day, I was lucky enough to find a spot wide enough for me to drive my truck straight up the hill. When I got back from class, I found that damned green envelope under my wiper. I checked the rest of the cars, trucks, and whatever else was there (including a VW Microbus--PIMP!!) and not a single one of them had a ticket but me. WTF!!!!!!!! It's three semesters later and I have yet to pay the ticket. I don't intend to either. I may go fight it. Or I may just not do anything. But I have to say, Weber State University in Ogden,Utah is one of the most unprofessional, low-budged, poor excuses for a college I have ever seen. It reminds me of high school. And that is a VERY bad thing.

Ah,well...it looks equally good as a diploma...it's still a real university, even if the professors can't teach and the available classes suck and the schedule is so random, it's impossible to fit all your generals on the same day within an hour of eachother...what the hell is up with that?

I hope that the delay on HL2 has given Valve (whom I personally worship...you can't blame them for those punkass bastards hacking into the system at Valve and stealing the source code) a chance to upgrade HL2 to TODAYS highest standards, and that we don't get the game as it would have been last september. We can already tell that the graphics and physics are up to it, but a majority of what makes up a game is much more subtle and can only be experienced and evaluated by actually participating in the game....this is what I fear has gone unchanged. That doesn't mean I expect it to be, rather, quite the contrary. I do, however, fear it.

And yes...the water was the first...and last...thing that awed me about Far Cry. But you can't build a game around water graphics. So it sucked anyhow.

Can't help you with the gatting laid issues. I need my own help in that area...at least, at the moment.

WTF, i just typed a shi.tload of stuff on what top secret stuff i do for living, and accidently hit refresh or something, and all is gone.anyway, i work as a access/system admin for some corp. security dept. for couple buildings. basically big *** room filled with radioactive stuff, ex: PCs, and also PCs and also some big *** monitors and also PC's. responding to alarms like u do, but if i get a single alarm, i have to work my *** off for the eveining. Crisis management in short.why 3rd shift, bcause seniority counts here instead of job performance, and i kinda chose one 3rd shift and it went downhill from there for other days.

here's couple sites to keep your brain entertained when not busy:

http://www.megagames.com---best site for updates on games i say and hardware too maybe

http://www.ign.com--gameshttp://www.gam ... om---games duhhh

http://www.tomshardware.com--good hardware review site, but dude doesn't test the latest stuff all the time. u can find video on that site someoen pushing pentium 4 past 5GHZ barrier with nitrogen cooling.

As for getting laid, my colleague promised he'll bring a biiiach in a van next time we work. banging in a parking lot. let see if he keeps his promise.

plz say that HL2 turned 18 so i can fock it legally. thank you.

Ahhh yes...it's thurday again.

Those sites should prove useful. Yesterday I had my XBox here, playing Riddick, but I can't have it here tonight...some of my coworkers have a problem with that. So I'll need something better.

If you want something really wierd, check out this odd flash cartoon. The song will be stuck in your head for days.

I just paid off the rest of my Nintendo DS preorder...but I can't find any new info to satisfy my hunger. Same with GTA:San Andreas. The last two weeks of waiting for any big game are terrible.

Speaking of which: new update on Half Life 2 date. Valve has changed from "First week of November" to around Nov 7. A specific date likely means this one is for real (since they haven't offered anything more specific than "Fourth quarter 2004" since 2003. We can only hope. Desperately.

Oh yeah, and I checked out that PC pricing site you suggested. I found the exact same PC I was going to pay 3200 for, for less than 2000. I owe you for that one, dude! Now I CAN afford it, AND school!

oh, did u say u owe me? well yeah why dont u just send me the check for $1200 you were gonna spend, and i will build a pc that'll outperform any pc that costs more than $2500. dont worry about it though. it comes from a geek who spend good years of his life just reading any small tech info he can find, geek without life.

yes its thursday, but no more surfing, i have to write 2 papers for tomorrow's eng200 class. not fun.

IMPORTANTEEEEE: when you buy CPU from pricewatch.com, make sure you get a retail package which has 3 year warranty and a heatsink from intel in the sealed package itself. for everything else, you're smart enough to take care of. get a good power supply and a asus motherboard, and you will have extremely fine and reliable Personal Computer.

No, DOOM 3 doesn't suck. Your expectations suck.

You played the game expecting another Half Life 2 or something. An amazing game. DOOM 3 is not meant to be that. It's supposed to be a frag fest with good graphics. It is. It did that damn well. If that's all you want out of it then its a great game. I very much enjoy a game where I can run around a just kill things. DOOM 3 is a game where storyline and such don't matter. Just play it to kill ****.

It's fun if all you want out of it is what it is, and nothing more. It never professed to be anything more than a frag fest with good graphics and lighting, and it isn't. It doesn't need to be.

HOWEVER:

I haven't played it in a while becuase of HL2. I'd never give up HL2 time to play DOOM 3.

Ho, Ho, Ho! so you agree it sucks.

i mean no question it has high quality textures, and state of the art lighting system, but it sucks. i played (when i got it, which was way before HL2) for30 mins and was bored.

i suck too, wtf am i doing here. i got so much crap coming up, that i am drowning. finals this week and whole next week. now i know why students commit suicide.

If you do, can I have your computer and games? Naw, I'm kidding man...that'd be a bad thing.

Just remember...once it's all over, you can play games all day for a couple of weeks. Fun, huh? "Course, that never works for me, but hey...

I'm going back to school in the spring, and I'm not looking forward to it. As much as I realize how important it is, and as much as I want to have a decent career in the future, I just plain despise school. I'm only taking two classes, though, so I shouldn't be too bad off. No time for more than two. Halleluja!

DOOM3 expansion just announced. DOOM 3: Resurrection of Hell. Two years after the events of DOOM 3, UAC has managed to cover up their accident as a "Terrible Reactor Meltdown." They've sent all troops home, despite the pleas of UAC scientists who are experiencing strange things. You play as a "combat engineer" on a dig sight in the Martian civilization, then to the Phobos labs, and back to Hell. All the while you are being stalked by the now-demonized Dr. Betruger, who has summoned three super-boss-monster "Hunter" demons, because you are carrying the very creation of Hell that Betruger needs to re-awaken the hordes of hell: a demonic, beating heart that endows you with special abilities and feeds off the souls of the dead. You'll get a new ability for the Heart every time you kill a Hunter, and possibly there will be more than just three abilities.

Although not developed by id directly, the games developer, Nerve Software, is being "supervised" by id. It looks to me like the game took everything that worked from the first game, put a fresh face on it, and made a new game. Sounds fun to me. As much as everyone hates DOOM 3, I loved it. I need a pointless, mindless shoot-em-up every once in a while, and DOOM 3 does a damn good job of that. The one thing I am disappointed about so far is that apparently your flashlight will now be attached to your gun, as in the "Duct Tape Mod" for DOOM 3. To me, that destroys the entire game. Half the fun of DOOM 3 was walking around not sure whether you'd rather be able to see or shoot, because you can't do both. It halped build the atmosphere, and with that very important element now gone, I wonder if it will still feel the same...

Another interesting observation:

DOOM 3: Resurrection of Hell ANDQuake IV are now in the works. But neither is being developed by id. Both are being done by other teams who are being "supervised" by id. So the question I keep asking myself, and the question I hope to see answered soon, is:"What is id doing that is so important as to take all their attention from these two games?" DOOM 4, perhaps? One can only guess...
