So using the logic I see so frequently from the liberals on this forum, that means nobody should vote for Obama. Democrats are clearly all bad.
And the Republicians are all angels?

The sex scandal list for Republicans appears to be much longer than for Democrats. Probably because the Dems have fewer sexual hangups?

Wow.. normally I don't want to choke people because of their opinions.. but that one is just all wrong.

If I were in politics.. and having an affair would gain me something politically for the government.. I suppose I would do it. But then again, I do believe that all > one.

Then, IMHO, you don't deserve to be in this forum discussing politics!

The way I see it, by not voting, you also voluntarily give up your right to praise our government for its good deeds or whine about it for its not so good deeds. Period.

you ever heard of free speech? its one of the inalienable rights that is guaranteed by the US Constitution, regardless if someone votes or not.

The right to speak has nothing to do with the responsibility that comes with being a citizen. Everyone needs to be part of the political process, even if it's only by casting a vote.

Szhosain's point is well received, that is, if you're not interested enough in the process to cast a vote, why are you bothering to stop by this forum?

Voting is not the only way one can be part of the political process, there are tons of other ways this can be achieved without voting. One can be part of the process by: affiliation with a political organization or interest group, donating money, writing/contacting political officials, attending protests or rallies (civil disobedience), working on a campaign, petitions to the government, political lobbying, boycotts. The list is pretty much endless...

However, even if a person did not do any of those things, he can still voice his support or dissent thanks to a little something called The Bill of Rights.

We've fought with England for a long time to get the right to vote (Once again, Taxation without Representation) and then when we set up our own government we made it so that people could vote. And, people saw it as their duty, because thousands and thousands of lives were given up for this simple little thing. The right to put down your choice on a little piece of paper or raise your hand, or say Aye or Nay.. The right to vote is a fcksing responsibility that NOBODY seems to think they should do.

If you don't want the responsibility of helping put the government in place, and keeping America the land of the free and the home of the brave; either step up and vote, don't vote and don't ever whisper another fcsking word about the government good or bad again, or get the fcsk out of my country. Those are your choices.

I agree that you have a right to free speech under the current U.S. Constitution whether you choose to vote or not. What you are missing by not voting is using your ability to protect that Constitution and keep it in effect.

The majority of Americans, as demonstrated by the poor turnout in elections, seems to think that certain rights can't be eroded away. Before you claim the inalienable right of free speech, you have to have a government that recognizes that. Try selling your inalienable right to free speech to the Chinese government.

If we continue to let a minority of eligible voters decide on our government every four years we may well be allowing, through our quiet blessing of "minority rule", an unscrupulous group led by a despot to gradually or quickly take away those rights you claim as "inalienable".

When you finally think things have gotten too bad, it may be too far gone for your vote to matter when you finally decide to cast it. We need to practice our oversight of the government, our Constitution and the rights provided every election cycle.

Yes, you have the right to free speech in this country whether or not you vote. But for how long?

Oh, of course! I should have been clearer. I don't object to the person's right to free speech at all!

Perhaps, it would be better for me to say: I choose not to listen to people speak their opinions on politics (good or bad) if they do not participate in the democratic process we have in the US.

We have a right to a democratic process that we tend to take for granted here in the US. That is sad!

As you note, the right to vote was one of the founding principles of this country. And, you have expressed my thoughts on the issue perfectly! That is exactly the point I wanted to make - thanks!

If free speech is a concern, then my other viewpoint applies: I have the right to ignore the rants or raves from anybody who does not exercise their right to vote.

Apathy is not a virtue!

Very well said. Thanks!

The US has an open and free democratic process for the governing of the country. Yes, I recognize that it is not perfect. But, it is a heck of a lot better than many ... nay, most other countries. Yet many of us take it for granted and do not realize what could happen if that democratic process is allowed to decay through apathy.

We need to protect our rights as best as we can. As citizens, we have a right to vote. That right must not be wasted, or allowed to degrade to the point where it becomes meaningless.

If you don't vote, then you might as well be telling the government how to live your life for you.

1984 is an awesome book, and it's what this country and many others will look like if people don't step up and take responsibility for their choices. If you choose to not vote, well then you choose to be poor, hungry, jobless, miserable, owned, and pretty much destitute. And, you know what, you deserve to be there.

So, practice your freedom of speech. (That's what we're doing right now, anyway, isn't it?) But, know that a lot of people have died for your right to speak freely. And, by not voting, you're giving up your loudest voice.

Marenta, I'm really surprised you didnt point out the military aspect of this whole conversation.

The military takes an oath not only to the Constitution but to its Commander in Chief, who happens to be the elected President of he United States. If, through our lax oversight by not voting every election cycle, we allow the laws of this country and our rights as citizens to be eroded, the military does not have the choice whether or not to follow the CinC's orders. If it's a lawful and not totally immoral order, the military will enforce it.

I've always admired the way the military "grunts" take the oath seriously enough to follow the CinC, no matter what poitical persuasion or military experience that CinC may have. A great example happened in front of me twice, two years apart, at my son's AFB. Overheard in the commissary multiple groups who detest Bush, the Republican Party and the Iraq war, but didn't waiver or stop from expressing that if ordered to Iraq by the Administration they would go and fight to the death to follow those orders. A real "disconnect" from political belief and actual action due to a sworn sense of duty.

Voting is essential to prevent the military from becoming a vehicle of political enforcement by unscrupulous politicians in a way that could damage our rights.

I find it humorous that people think they are really in control. Vote, please do, enjoy yourself but the game is fixed. The fact that your two "choices" are people you don't really agree with much, including the guy you plan on voting for should tell you something.

I Don't vote. I don't buy into the delusion I can exert any control with my one vote over a government that is opaque and can erase or create thousands of votes with a few keystrokes. Who owns those cute little touchscreen machines by the way?

First, I'm a third party guy. If a vast majority of Americans would actually vote for someone, the two major parties couldn't claim a mandate. We've already beaten that subject to death in this forum so I'm not going to beat it any more.

Second, I refuse to use those rigged machines with bogus software. Always file a paper ballot for a paper trail. Yes, the vote counting can be rigged the same way, but it's the best I can do at the moment.

I've actually never understood the need for knowing what the vote count is 30 seconds after the polls close or the rationale for not allowing time to hand count ballots prior to inauguration. We're so wrapped up in instant gratification that we don't take the accuracy of the process seriously enough.

If the situation is really as bad as you say, where is it better, what can we do to fix our system, and if it's as hopeless as you indicate why are you still here paying it pointless lip service?

I wonder what would happen if everybody had enough knowledge to make an informed decision about a candidate and then if you were of legal age to vote and could do so, you did.

I bet that would be one election for the books.

Not because it's all a repost, but because we keep on beating this same dead horse, over and over and over again.

Then it just goes to congress to decide. You think the building full of democrats and republicans is going to vote in a 3rd party candidate?

What do you mean lip service? I pay it nothing.

Such a vote would put an awful lot of pressure on Congress to do so. I would fully expect the majority party, which would be either Republican or Democrat, to pick their own person. Without a majority of the electorate supporting him/her, compromise and cooperation would become necessary for party survival. No more "the American people have spoken and we have a mandate to shove our policies down your throat no matter what anyone else might think."

Even if you don't agree with the above, is there a solution other than the violent overthrow of the government? What would you set up or do differently to prevent it from happening again in 250 more years?

Is telcoman a human being or a bot?

I guess I'd cut and paste too, if I hadn't had an original thought since the Nixon Administration.

Actually, I don't have the physical requirements to do so, but I have the mental and intestinal fortitude to do so. The only issue would be to actually threaten to take away something that means a great deal.. like copulation.. in exchange for a vote. I'm sure if that were taken away from me, I'd vote for Armageddon even. But, I've always been a black sheep. Baaaaa!

Because congress responds to pressure from us The American people have the attention span of a ferret on coke and the politicians know that. We don't scare them. The average Americans outrage and righteous indignation will last until dinner time when American Idol comes on the idiot box.

There is nothing to prevent it from happening again. That is the fundamental problem. Every machine wears out, develops faults and eventually breaks down. When that happens what do you do? Overhaul or replace it. I am no wolrd history geek but I beleive America has lasted as long or longer than most great empires. All of them began to fester with corruption and complacency why do people think the great experiment that is America would be immune from the natural order of things?

When a cancer has matasticized do they go after ech little lump peicemeal? No. Corruption is standard operating procedure in today's government. A cute little election every four years is just public spectical to entertain the troglodytes; keep them thinking they are in control.

Violent upheaval is the only answer. And to the NSA geek reading this thread now that my statements have caused it to be tagged, go **** yourself you cog, we are coming for you too.
