If anyone takes offense, or turns this into a political debate, their gonna see the wrong side of my boot (flip flop, I don't wear shoes) up their back side. This is real data of average IQ's by state, overlayed w/ the 2004 election results. I found it ammusing, as I'm sure all you fine folks will with your exceptional sense of humor.

You can all just assume that you're "above average" if you live in the mid west

The political side of that graph is amuzing. The fact that there are states with an average IQ below 100 is scary.. I have trouble thinking those stats arent total botched, an iq of 85 is mildly retarded.

The AVERAGE IQ in Mississippi is 85?!

That means that half are below 85.

I've been to Mississippi, people seemed fine to me, no one unable to open doors or tie their shoes or anything like that...

Factoid: "Moron" is an actual (if seldom used nowadays) medical term used to describe an individual with an IQ of less than 75.

I think whoever made that graph needs to get their head checked... they spelled Missouri "Mossouri" (#27)...

I bet you werent out in the countryside though...Mildly rertarded is anything under IQ80 yes.

Keep in mind that IQ tests administered in english, also use your ability to relate "fancy" words in various ways.

In some areas, that would be a real challenge for many folks.

I have met people that appear to function normally, yet when you have a regular conversation with them , they turn out to be ignorant as dirt (which would cripple their ability to function well on a test)

The theory being, that a person with higher intelligence will know his native language better (which is of course why a non native speaker would be incredibly handicapped)

On a related note:The other week I met someone here (must have had a semi-decent job as he drove a non beater vehicle) who thought Israel was in South America and who didnt know what the West Bank was, or who lived there...

I worked there during the summer of 03 and they didn't seem to be that smart. Most likely because I wasn't working in a "high IQ" area. Dang stupid Californians . There are too many stupid people here bring the rest of us down. Can't believe NY isn't ranked higher, o well.

PS. My mom voted for Bush and I can tell you for a fact that she is not very bright. Either that or I'm not used to associating with "average people (IQ100)" Probably because I get impatient with them.

Hmm...we should all take an IQ test and post the scores. I am pretty sure we will rank much higher than average since we are "smart" enough to own Nissans.

being a possesor of a high IQ but still loses his keys almost daily and has actually hit himself in the head with a mallet I can tell you a score on a test is no indication of good judgement. This survey is another example thw ay politicians think they somehow are more intelligent than the average American and thusly can discount the "stupid peoples" opinion. It doesn`t take high power smarts to know right from wrong and the suggestion that IQ scores are indicative of better judgement is stupid. Most "smart people" I know have their head so far up their *** they don`t know what they are doing. Sure they would do good on Jeoprady and can quote Aristotle but would also try to sympathize with a cold-blooded killer with a sword to their throat. That`s dumb

true enough TMS: intelligence doesnt specifically limit nor encourage ignorance: although the two are certanly correlated, you have to admit.

I personally believe an IQ score determines how fast one can learn, ie. determines a person's learning curve. Yea, I admit that smart people do stupid things all the time, but its the smart ones who learn from their mistakes the fastest.

I agree with yelnatsch. It is definitely an indicator of one's ability for future learning and how quick you can pick things up. On a side note. The people possessing the highest avg IQ are physicians.

I`ve never liked standardized test for something as abstract as intelligence. It can serve no good purpose and can discourage people who are very capable thinkers but perhaps function a little differently. There is a difference between knowing a bunch of facts and figures and being able to think effectively. You could enter every fact about the two candidates into a Cray XMP supercomputer and ask it to pick the best candidate based on things like "who is best for the economy" or "who will protect us from terrorists" and "who has a similar set of moral values to you, Mr. Computer". I seriously doubt for all it`s power it could effectively decide. Similarly the elite advanced thinker who would point to this survey as some reason why an investment banker in Phillidelphia with six years of college, a huge house with a porsche in the garage, a trophy wife who he cheats on by the way with his 22-year-old secretary and a has a "recreational" cocaine habit is somehow more capable of picking the best man to be president than say a construction worker in suburban Virginia who never made much money, owns his own home albeit not much of one, barely graduated high school but rather learned most of what he knows by living, loves his wife and kids and worries about their future, well as much as he can wrap his feeble 85IQ=point brain around the sophisticated concept of "the future" Is completely off base. Unless a man is sitting in his own waste claiming to be a space alien I am willing to figure his opinion into account. Maybe because that construction worker tought the little smart kid how to be a man and that a test score doesn`t tell you squat about the man.

The fact that anyone would look at this as anything more than amusing is itself amusing.

There's no correlation between registered voters IQ, much less actual voters.

I think Twain said it best "Lies, damn lies and statistics."
