does rotating tires require reprogramming TPMS?

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

When I had my EX35's tires rotated at an Infiniti dealer, they told me that the TPMS had to be reprogrammed (which they charge $10 extra for) to avoid problems with the warning light. Is that true, or was he just trying to rip me off?

My invoice says "ROTATE TIRES W/TPMS ADJ-ROTAT".

I see a thread about the M here: zerothread?id=410760 where someone said it depends on the model year, and they quoted part of the M manual that mentions it. The EX manual, though, only says "when a spare tire is mounted or a wheel is replaced, the TPMS will not function"; it doesn't say anything about tire rotation like the M manual. And the EX doesn't display which tire is low anyway, right?

And even if it's like the M, that manual says it can be reset just by driving for 10 minutes, not bringing it to the dealer.

Now I looked at the EX35 Factory Service Manual, and it does seem to say that "ID Registration" is required after tire rotation (page WT-6 and WT-100). Is that right? If so, if I get my tires rotated somewhere other than the dealer, will they also do the necessary ID registration? What happens if it isn't done? It seems a little odd that the owner's manual doesn't mention it.

i have a 2008 and have rotated per schedule and have never reset the Tpms, on the 2008 its just a generic warning for low pressure it never indicates which wheel and or pressure.

Never had the Tpms light come on prematurely.

Just had new wheels put on yesterday, not at the dealer, and no issues with TPMS readings. Same with the wife's G35 coupe. never an issue after tire changes/rotation.

The only reason for having to reset the system that I can see is if the stability and traction control systems use tire pressure data. So if you move a tire from front left to rear right and it lost pressure would the computer react incorrectly to a skid or wheel slip events.

I have rotated tires and driven in the slick stuff and I didn't notice any difference in how the stability system and traction control worked or felt. I haven't done this with a low tire though.

With my old Vette tire sensor position mattered but the question to what degree is unclear. The car had runflat/crap tires and if the computer saw a tire with low pressure it would reduce max engine power and top speed. With a car that has 400HP and a180MPH+ top speed that makes sense.

sounds like a bunch of junk to me. i have never, for all the vehicles we have that have tpms had to "reprogram" the tpms. sure i've had to reset it, not on an infiniti though.

to me it sounds like they're trying to penny pinch you.

No, plain and simple, it does NOT require a reprogram!

That's non-sense at far as I am concern.....Your dealer must be really desperate if they are ripping people for an extra $10.....

On the 2008, its just a generic warning for low pressure and it never indicates which wheel and what the Tire pressure is.
