If you haven't, or if it's been a while a better outlet for some of the money would be some sailing classes and then maybe a few session rentals to make sure it's not going to be something that just collects dust & rust.
Do you plan on sailing alone? You can run a Hobie 16 on your own but they weigh around 300lbs. Not exactly easy to haul around on land on your own. If you plan on running a one man show you might want to think about a Laser even if a monohull doesn't seem nearly as a sexy as a cat. It will be easier to pack around and loads cheaper too.
You're in the right state to be looking into sailing though!
I've definitely decided that I like it enough to warrant a purchase. I learned two seasons ago on Hunter 140s and moved up to Day Sailers. I don't really care for the leisurely cruise as much as I do the speed and hiking out. Last season, I spent most of my time hiked out on a Laser. I love that little thing, especially in high wind.
I haven't had the opportunity to sail a Hobie yet, but a woman from work doesn't mind taking me out and letting me see if I like it or not. But from here, they look like a blast! She also has a few friends who have nice boats who just aren't using them anymore and want to get out of the sport. She presumes 1000-2000 for a very well maintained and equipped boat.
I've considered a monohull for the sake of getting it in and out, but I live on a HUGE lake. I just moved here, but so far this winter I have seen a few people modify their Hobie 16's to do ice sailing. Freggin' cool looking, they HAUL! But I digress, I can keep whatever I buy in the yard and all I'll have to do is haul it in and out of the water. Though a 300lb Hobie does sound like a behemoth.

I love sailing. If I could make a living doing it I would lol.
Quit your job, sell your cars, and buy a big a** boat. Take it to the Virgin Islands, call some stateside travel agencies regarding promoting of all inclusive private cruises and sailing lessons. I'm pretty sure theres a market for that. Be your own captain/business and have fun doing it!
