Hi, I recently got the p0420 code reading on my 01 I30 and took the car to have it diagnosed. The mech showed me the reading where the cat converter needed to be replaced. He quoted me a cost of $550 to do the job, I was just wondering if this was something I could do myself? The cat that he showed me looked like this:

Thanks for the help.

Do not replace the Pre-cat right away. Do your basic diagnostic. Make sure the gas cap is tight and is an OEM one. Also check for intake/exhaust leak.

There is an Infiniti Tech Bulletin for 00&01 I30 that addresses this P0420 issue. The fault code may be due to ECM misdiagnosis and may be corrected by re-programming. It may also require you to replace the O2 sensors.

I mentioned the bulletin to the mechanic (who seemed like a trustworthy person) so he then showed me the diagnostic reading where I could see the bank 1 and 2 readings (one of them, bank 2, I think, showed that something wasn't functioning correctly= I could see on the reading where the functioning one started as a squiggly line and then came out as a straight line and then the non-functioning one had squiggly lines for both going in and coming out) which the mech said meant that I needed a new cat. This is the 3rd time that I've gotten a reading having to do with exhaust and emissions in the past year, the past two had to do with 02 sensors and the Advance Auto employee suggested that it was probably an issue with my gas cap and then cleared it out. I'll definitely go reread your thread on the subject and see if it applies. Thanks
