Well let Marilyn Davenport, a Southern California Tea Party activist and member of the central committee of the Orange County Republican Party, enlighten you!

Remember! The Tea Party is not racist!

Unfortunately it may have more to do with the Republican Party than the Tea Party. The Republicans are making some very poor choices when it comes to their committees and citizen's groups. Remember this one?

http://www.pe.com/localnews/inland/stor ... 67d4a.html

I recognize that a few bad apples do not the party make but they don't seem to learn from their mistakes. Instead they tolerate and defend this type of thing only because they have to defend the party at all costs, right or wrong.

And this recent view of the Republicans in California from The Economist

http://www.economist.com/node/18529931? ... 1&fsrc=rss

The Republican Party overall has a racism problem, not just the Tea Party fringe.

Clearly, Marilyn Davenport is a total idiot!

But extrapolating a tag of racism to the entire party - whether Tea or Republican - is an unreasonable stretch.

reasonable or not, these sort of people need to be denounced. the GOP is complacent when these sort of statements come to light because they enjoy the publicity and popularity. Its guilt by association and i'm perfectly fine damning them for not standing up the absolutely flagrant racism displayed by the more radical factions of the conservative party.

if your friend was a blatant racist, and you didnt stand up to denounce his behavior, what does that make you?

Sure!

But, the connection to assume everybody is supporting the person - on the basis of not denouncing them explicitly - is not reasonable at all.
heliochrome85 wrote:if your friend was a blatant racist, and you didnt stand up to denounce his behavior, what does that make you?
Dumb to have him as a friend perhaps, but not denouncing him does not make me racist certainly.

I have a friend who is a devout Christian and believes everybody should be one ... does that make me a Christian if I don't stand up to his religious preaching (he is a good person otherwise)?

I have yet another friend who is against gay marriages ... does that make me against gay marriages even though I have not publicly said anything (he is entitled to his viewpoint - regardless of how wrong I consider it)?

The bottom line: Your "guilt by association due to lack of public denouncement" statement does not make sense to me and does not pass reasonable muster.

In exactly the same way I did not hold Obama's connection with that firebrand preacher of his congregation against him personally.

And, for exactly the same reasons that I am not against the vast majority of Catholic priests for them not publicly denouncing Terry Jones.

Everybody needs to stop taking inflammatory extreme positions ... on all sides of all the discussions going on right now in the world.

The real issue is you're expecting the GOP to denounce one vocal and idiotic Tea Party member. Why would they do that? They're not the same party. In fact, the GOP is threatened by the TP.

So, the GOP will sit back and let the wackos in the DNC and the TP do their thing.

I can find 10 DNC nutcases for every TP wackjob. It's meaningless. Your "guilt by association" stretch puts you in Howieland, and I KNOW you're smarter than that.

p.s. What's MORE telling than her party affiliation is her residence. Gotta love Clownifornia.

one tea party member? interesting. just one huh?

also, I believe it was john boehner who said 'No Daylight Between Tea Party and Me."
http://blogs.abcnews.com/george/2011/04 ... nd-me.html

i guess you are right, the two have such different goals with the GOP demanding lesser taxes, smaller government, more family values, and anti-muslim, anti-hispanic, anti-homosexual legislation. it contrasts greatly with the Tea Party that demands lesser taxes, smaller government, more family values, and anti-muslim, anti-hispanic, and anti-homosexual legislation.

please, don't play me for stupid.

I seem to remember a Bush chimpanzee parody, was that racist? Oh wait Bush is white, racists only pick on black people right?

Or "monkey" isn't historically a slur thrown at white people. But, hey, don't let context get in the way of your ideology.

Well all I'm saying, is could it be possible that the monkey slam ties more to his conceived diminutive intellect than it does to his race? Im just asking the question, since the same parody was plaid on 'ol W, could the same apply for 'ol Barry? Oh, and race aside, the man actually DOES favor a chimpanzee.

I can conceive of a number of ways to compare someone to a chimpanzee. That doesn't change the historically racial connotations that come with such a comparison when it involved a black (or Asian, I believe) person.

But, again, don't let context get in the way of your ideology.

Yes, let's tread lightly when it comes to historically racial connotations. That's exactly how we should behave, if we ever want to make progress... Please.

God forbid one of his daughters ever have a child - They'd have to call him "Uncle Barack", and that's AWFULLY similar to "Uncle Tom".

p.s. I'm unaware of any historical racist connotations involving Asians and primates (and being from the Deep South, I thought I had a pretty good handle on all manner of bigotry), but I'm sure you'll enlighten me.

p.p.s. Tariq, if I were "playing you for stupid", I'd have to work a lot harder than that. But it's just as absurd for you to ask for a wholesale Tea Party condemnation of this one wackjob as it is for me to continually ask you and Z to condemn the behavior of a middle eastern radical Muslim. We've had this discussion before. Don't play me for playing you for stupid. ;)

You know what, Greg? You're right. Pretending the historical connotations don't exist is so much better than recognizing that they do. You know where I went wrong? It was where I actually suggested that we don't make the comparison. See, I thought I was simply saying that you shouldn't be surprised that there are racial implications because of the historical context. Thank you for showing me what I was actually saying. From now on, it'd be best if I just ok'd my comments to you for approval before posting.

Naw, but could you imagine if I was really like that?

I could swear there were racial comparisons that came out of the Vietnam War. Wasn't around then, which is why I represented that I wasn't certain of it when I wrote.

No need to get snippity.

I'm just not a fan of making a mountain out of a molehill. I mean, let's take it to the absurd: You walk into Home Depot with your lovely new bride, shopping for a new appliance for her kitchen (HER kitchen - see what i did there? ;) ). I've already made note of your last name and appearance, and carefully deduce that, in light of specific cultural historical connotations, I shouldn't ask you what she'll be cooking in your new oven?

I don't want to live in that kind of world. Let's just call an idiot an idiot.

Rather than tiptoeing around every little thing, I'd rather ask blunt, pointed questions of those making the implication - "Are you employing the 'monkey' imagery as a racist connotation?" And if so, I'd then revert to your previously-mentioned tactic: Point and laugh at the idiot.

p.s. You may be right about the Vietnam thing, I don't know. It's just not a euphemism I'm familiar with, and I thought I'd heard all of them.

Absolutely inappropriate for a political leader to do that. Even hinting at racism, IMHO.
I'd like to point to all the other dimwits like Palin, Bachmann, Brewer or even Meg Whitman, and claim some sort of Democratic superiority, but I'd have to explain Pelosi if I did that. Then I'd have to explain Boxer. The common denominator is that damn estrogen conspiracy. Women need to stay out of politics. Seriously.

And where are you going with this, Tariq?

Let's ask for some common sense from everybody and stop making flippant remarks (me included) that have no bearing and are simply not adding to the discussion in a meaningful way at all.

I am going to start behaving myself too and also start deleting and editing posts that are heading in the wrong direction (yes, in my opinion - deal with it).

Enough is enough!
