Yep, check the VSS (vehicle speed sensor). Check it with a multimeter. The resistance between the two terminals (the plug end) should be approx. 250 ohms.
You'll have to remove the vss from the transmission to check the voltage.
To measure voltage across the two terminals, spin the pinion (red one if it's from a 91-94, not sure on the 89-90) quickly and measure the voltage. You should read .5 volts A/C. If not, then it's bad.
