Dood, i just had a post disputing the idea that the Catholic church preaches salvation by good works, and not personal faith...

You wish to dispute here? What Bible are you reading?

Ephesians 2:8,9....."For by grace are you saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; is it the gift of God. Not of works, lest any man should boast."

You are saved if you believe in the Lord and trust that he is your savior, accept that you are a sinner, and repent of your sins. You are then able to act in accordance with the teachings of Jesus in the new testament. This is the personal relationship that is taught in the Bible.

Works are not a means to an end(if you think being good gets you to heaven). Works alone guarantee you nothing, except knowing that you have done good for fellow man.

Good works are an end result of your personal relationship with the Lord and your faith in Chirst's shed blood for your sins. You act in accordance with what the Bible says, to spread the good news of the gospel, NOT in hopes of gaining salvation, but in accordance with Jesus' teachings to preach the gospel. If you have believed in Christ, your good works are an extension of your faith. If you do not believe in Christ, and the shedding of his blood to pay for our sins, then your good works are a vain attempt at acting as though you are saved by God's grace.

I'm usually quiet about such things, but I'm surprised that people would suggest that good deeds alone will save your soul. The Bilbe says different, as evidenced above. Good works will not save your soul(my soul included). To suggest otherwise is going against the very word of the Bible.

Well maybe I was mistaken, but I'll keep living my life doing what I can for others, I could care less about religion.

Phil NAILED it, folks.

It's terribly hard for our puny brains to comprehend that a convicted murderer who has repented and accepted Christ could be in Heaven, while someone who did nothing but good for others yet turned his back on Christ could be in hell. But keep in mind, that the Bible specifically cautions us here and encourages us not to lean on our own understanding, for it not for us to fathom, but to trust in the Lord's grace that His will for your life is perfect.

I'm afraid that the catholic church doesn't teach this. When this Nancy person gets the other thread back, I'll continue the discusison from there. However I'm not sure that you're catholic, so instead of pulling out the catechism, I might be forced to pull out the good old bible :)

i dont think that doing tons of good work gets you into Heaven despite having no faith. i do the nice stuff i do cause i was taught to be a nice person, not because doing nice things for people gets you rewards. if the person becomes my friend and likes me, thats good enough. also, being a Eagle Scout, rewards are not my concern. i feel good when i help people just because i know i did something good, but that doesnt stop be from believing in Chist. i may not go to church all that often, but i still believe in His teachings.
