Ephesians 2:8,9....."For by grace are you saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; is it the gift of God. Not of works, lest any man should boast."
You are saved if you believe in the Lord and trust that he is your savior, accept that you are a sinner, and repent of your sins. You are then able to act in accordance with the teachings of Jesus in the new testament. This is the personal relationship that is taught in the Bible.
Works are not a means to an end(if you think being good gets you to heaven). Works alone guarantee you nothing, except knowing that you have done good for fellow man.
Good works are an end result of your personal relationship with the Lord and your faith in Chirst's shed blood for your sins. You act in accordance with what the Bible says, to spread the good news of the gospel, NOT in hopes of gaining salvation, but in accordance with Jesus' teachings to preach the gospel. If you have believed in Christ, your good works are an extension of your faith. If you do not believe in Christ, and the shedding of his blood to pay for our sins, then your good works are a vain attempt at acting as though you are saved by God's grace.
I'm usually quiet about such things, but I'm surprised that people would suggest that good deeds alone will save your soul. The Bilbe says different, as evidenced above. Good works will not save your soul(my soul included). To suggest otherwise is going against the very word of the Bible.
