I am planning to pick up some coilovers for my 89' rps13 in about two months. This car is my daily driver so i dont want my suspension to be too rough to where i want to die after a 20 minute drive, but i'd love to have it where i can push it hard if i want (i live in the mountains).

if any of you could give me some suggestions on some good coilovers i'd greatly appreciate it

ksport makes a 36way adjustable coilover system so you can have the best of both worlds. cost between 7-800 dollars though. you can find them on eBay

all the available coilovers are pretty stiff, and all will make the car feel every seam or bump in the road. You get used to it pretty quick though its really not that bad.

IMO the dampening is really important. I can deal with a stiff/bumpy ride, but a bouncy one gets very annoying. I find its actualy a more comfortable ride with the shocks turned up some so they can do their job, rather then just letting the springs bounce with the shocks on low thinking you have your suspension set to "soft"

Just look for a reputable brand(springs are some what easy to make, again its the quality of the damper that will really control the ride quality) with a lower spring rate.

I have KTS with the 8/6 springs, though Ive heard that SPL will sell them with 7/5 springs also... Keep in mind that many coilovers are designed for smooth roads and sticky tires. Even the 8/6 setup which is semi soft compaired to others starts loosing some grip on roads that aren't real nice.

IMO KTS seems to be the bottom of the barrel while still maintaining good quality and offering decent rates. If you are not doing track events and still want coilovers I'd reccomend the 7/5 KTS...

Try to get a ride in cars that have what ever coilovers you are getting

I had Ksports on my last 240. It's rough but you get used to it pretty quick. The thing that really made a difference was when I got an aftermarket drivers seat that had more padding. A way to negate the rough ride is to get smaller diameter wheels, like 15''s, and then you have some sidewall for padding.

I run Ksports and I feel that the ride is way to harsh for dd operations. I plan on getting different springs with higher rates. As of now I supposedly have 7/5's on there and I want to go up to 8/6 and adjust the dampening.

If you want smooth coilovers I would say go with some APEXi world sport dampners, they don't come with pillowball mounts but they are by far the smoothest coils I have ever ridden on for DD. I have ridden on JIC FLT-A2's, KTS, Apexi WS, Ksports, and Tien HE's. Now I know there are far more models of coils than that but this is just my experience.

I thought Ksports are the really crappy coilovers? I keep confusing ksport and kts. One is good and the other one sucks, can't seem to remember for sure which is which, but I think KTS is the better one.

Cusco Zero 2E's for the win. Ride a lot better than the Buddy Club Race Specs that I use to have. Stainless body and spring perch. Very good quality! I have the in cockpit dampening control, but you don't have to have that option if you want to save money. I mainly have it because I am a Cusco dealer and figured I better. All of the Cusco coilovers are a well balance of performance and ride quality.

KTS are supposedly the better ones, I have ridden on both. The KTS are inverted if I remember correctly? I like the Ksports though because the perches, mounts, and connecting pieces are all cnc aluminum instead of welded pieces of steel. Thus no worries of rust later on. The dampening on the KTS's are superior due to the inverted monotube design. The Ksports work great when running the touge or at the track but for DD they are too stiff for my liking. Oh well, time to get a new DD lol.

Cusco dealer says custo coilovers are great. Amazing.

(I have no experiance so they may well be, but I find its better to look for opinions from people who don't make money of the products sale.)

True. But you know somethings definately wrong when a dealer uses a different brand than the one he's selling.

Do you think Cusco is the only coilover I sell? I wouldn't make much money if I only sold one brand of product!

I am a Tein dealer..... I like Cusco better! Before I was a Cusco dealer, I liked Cusco better! Has nothing to do with me selling them.

Continue on....

Wow, you are critical.

It's common for people to use either spelling.

The act of "dampening" something is to deaden, restrain or depress it.

Dampening relates to making something wet, or soundproofing. Damping is the reduction of the amplitude of an oscillation.

I took my definition right out of the dictionary... "to deaden, restrain or depress it"

It does have multiple meanings, but either is correct.

so i take it that it's kinda down to KTS, Ksport, and cusco. does anyone have any opinions on tein, JIC, tanabe, etc?

and just incase anyones going to flame me for expecting too nice of a ride with coilovers im well prepared for a non-mercedes ride haha i would just like a good set of coilovers that is a good median so i dont want to kill myself during my DD and yet still keep a decent ride on some togue trails.

Personally, I understand completely. My car is going to be a DD, too, and I don't want it to ride like a track-only car. I'm going for sort of a stealth touring thing with mine. I'll be keeping track of this thread.

I'm not sure about the Megans, but it seems a lot of owners on this site use them. The JIC ride rough, but the Tein are pretty good. You also have to remember most manufacturers have several lines of coilovers..... good, better, best as you will. In my experience with cars and coilovers, the 240 just rides rougher than most others. My Sti with Cusco Zero 2R's rides WAY better than my S13 with the Zero 2E's.... and the Zero 2R's are more of a track setup. You are going to have a rough ride no matter what..... how much just depends on the coilover and spring rate.

Can anyone make a comment on the Stance GR's and the MeganRacing Street coilovers for a daily driver? I usually like more of a stiffer ride but just want to know which is better for a dd, they both are the 6/8 spring rate, but does anyone have experience with them?

The terms are interchangeable.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skank_(guitar)

The link relates to musical instruments, but an oscillating guitar sting is no different than an oscillating coil.

BTW: Stance makes a nice, relitively cheap coilover.

You get used to coils on a daily pretty quick. Anyone who can't handle it should just go and buy a cadillac. I have JIC Magic on my car, and even though it is rough and bumpy at times, I do not find it dramatically rougher than stock. I drive my car alot too. I have a pretty long commute to work in the mornings, and I go visit my friends in other cities a decent amount on the weekends.
