All cars need someway of knowing how much air is being ingested by the motor. This way it knows how much fuel it needs. Both a MAP sensor and a MAF sensor let the car's computer determine how much air is going in.

Think of them kinda like a boost gauge, except they use milivolts as a signal to the ecu. They also read off of boost aswell.
