I'm not trying to push mettler's cam deal away, but just sharing information that I came upon.I sent an e-mail to (disclosed for privacy) about custom cores, as he has that listed as a service on his website.

Here is his response:Quote »I believe I've made cams for that engine. I think it's the same one they run in the Indy Pro Series(I supply all their cams).

The cam profiles we're running on the I.P.S engines are most likely too big(244/[email protected]", .417"/338").

I don't have any cores left, but I already have the program.

I think I can also get a aftermarker cast core for it.

I can use a cam profile you supply, or you can have me design a better one.

As for a quote, I'd need to see the stock cams, to make sure they're the same as the ones I've made.

[/quote]I'm going to be sending him a stock VH intake and a stock VH exhaust cam to see what kind of quotes he can give me, and I'm also going to talk with him about making an intake cam without VTC that just has a bolt on gear like the exhausts do or just grinding the intake cam onto an exhaust cam core. More than likely, the cams won't be stock valvetrain friendly, as I have that badass set of VH heads I built last summer and I want to take full advantage of them.

I was originally going to just see about making a set for my motor, but I figured I might see if anyone on here was interseted, because surely I can't be one of the only guys who is doing a serious build and wants a wild power making setup (not a smooth driving comfort car) ?

Nice find, it's entirely possible that if he can supply the cam blanks cheaper than I can, then slap my grinds on that I've invested considerable time & money into R&D for, we may have a wickedly priced combo.

But if this ends up wrecking my venture, then I'm not gonna be a happy man!

Believe me your not the only one that could care less about smooth driving. I want it to be fast lol, the comfort went out the window with the 10k spring rates in my coil overs.

I really want to make a little more power, the vh turns the 295s good but id like a little better in third gear.

Im hoping for 350-370 whp thats all i want lol.

along with the heat..... and the a/c.... do you even have a stereo anymore? lol

I'm down for some cams after someone else dials them in first. No rush for me, I'll probably be ready for them in about a year unless they are ready sooner.

I'll actually have some results soon, might seem like I'm dragging my knuckles on this but I'm not. Picking up my cylinder head on friday & the measurements, and not too long after I'll have some more stuff to post up & show progress. I'll be gutted if I'm doing all this for nothing.

That's the size of cams I was wanting! 244/230* @ .050" lift is a bit big, but if I do end up dropping a VH in my mustang, I want a choppy idle at 800rpm and a wicked scream up top. If that's the route I take, I'll be saving the pennies for these cams, matching springs, and probably some custom ultra light pistons. May not make the power of a big inch domestic engine, but the sound and fuel savings would be worth it.

alright, more interest than I actually thought!!

Mettler, I called him today and was talking with him about me sending him one of my lobe masters with the grind I want on it, and he told me he doesn't use anyone else's masters to grind a lobe because he doesn't know the quality of the master... and if you grind a master off of a finished cam, the quality won't be the best. What we might be able to do is if you come up with a master, to send it to him and he can measure the duration/ramp rate/base circle/lobe lift and make his own master to use for grinding.

i've been wanting cams that big without VTC not for a choppy idle, but because I am wanting to put a high stalled C4 behind my VH so that I will have a high powerband and never drop out of it between shifts (drag car). I don't see why a VH with a little headwork, higher compression, and a set of badass cams like this wouldn't make as much power as the equivalent american smallblock!!!

No one talking about turbo cams here?

my plan is actually stick with stock cams, with some valve spring upgrades,. thats all.. but if there is a nice turbo cams R&D done by others... of course.. i would like to have a set.

ECU in tomorrow, tunning starting next week.....fire up the beast and abuse it............

From the very limited info in the Factory Service Manual, it looks like the stock cams would do quite well for turbo use. I'm debating taking this route too. Either high rpm NA screamer or just stock cams with some boost. Hmmm

I'm interested in some cams for my VH45, too. Don't know exactly when I'm going to get around to putting it in my 240 but when I do a little lumpiness would be pretty awesome. (The VH project will be finished before the Buick 350 powered datsun 210, though.)

B210's are sexy! lol My friend used to have one that was sideswiped by a semi. Still drove good when he sold it. Tough little cars. You MUST paint it Hugger orange and run the honeycomb hubcaps!!!

If anything supercharged engines may need a bit more on exhaust cams but intakes are always enough..............

Easy to analyse by using a flow bench and change the rates to reflect what any boost would flow.

Many make the mistake of over camming under boost and just blow good fuel air out the exhaust during the widened extended overlap period.

Oem 8 degrees is virtually zero compared to 28 or 48.

Tech is right. The low overlap of the stock cams is good. If you're going supercharger, a bit bigger exhaust cams would probably be good. For turbo, both stock cams should work excellent.

Only if you exceed 7300 rpm [new rods] as my 317,000 mile oem still function fine NA.

Conquest's are sweet. I have always loved the body style. Too bad they came with crappy engines. I have seen one with a 400 small block in it before and it was pretty stout. The VH should be right at home in there.

My stock cams are on their way, and when they arrive I will get a quote as far as price of billet core vs. cast core

Do you think that shot peened or Chrio Treated rods would last well at 7500rpm? Im not really looking to do rods on the first build. Just pistons, heads and service parts.

I think completly stock rods will last up untill 8500 rpm.

We run Stock sr20 rods to 9500 rpm with just arp rod bolts.

^^ they've used stock rods in several superstock engines here up to 9000rpm, and that's with a forged decompression piston which is in all likelyhood, heavier than a stock VH piston.

If your rotating assembly is balanced to have a little overbalance, high rpm won't be a problem with stock rods. What I would do is polish the beams and resize the big ends to be about .002 to .003" big at the parting line.. It's common for stock-type rods to squish at the parting line during high rpm use.

Well, since mettler locked his cam thread from being butthurt that someone else is getting them made and stealing his thunder even though he wasnt getting anything done, this can be the new thread about aftermarket cams for the VH45.

As an update to my original post, I'm having a set of cams ground right now on new billet cores with a stock base circle. The price is a little over 1100 dollars, but that's not bad in the grand scheme of things. My grinds are aggressive (233/[email protected], .480" lift), and need about 130# of seat pressure, and are pretty much maxing out what you can do with the stock rocker and valvetrain geometry.

Any updates on the briancrower cams would be nice to hear, but potential cam buyers.... beware that cams for a dohc v8 that are ground on new cores are going to be around or over 1000 dolalrs for a set.... so if you're a cheapie or on a buget, your best bet is to look into regrinds.

Not getting anything done? You wouldn't believe the amount of work I've done on this. I don't post much progress up publicly because well... what would be the point of giving away all my hard work? I just haven't moved forward with getting the machining and grinding done because I have no money left for it, due to wanting my actual car finished first. When I do get onto manufacturing them, I should be able to supply a set of cams for around the same price as yours, except mine will come with the upgrade springs required.

Good things come to those with patience m8.

Well, I was quoted 1600 for a set of hard welded reground stock cams (with factory base circle) from webcams... so your price for a set of new cams seems pretty good to me.

130# of seat pressure is pretty substantial, isn't it? I mean, I was able to find a set of drop in aftermnarket singles with 60# of pressure and aftermarket drop in duals with 89# of pressure... I don't know if I can find a spring with 130#...
