Maybe one of us can engineer a new hinge for the 94-96 Q armrests so that the cover slides back about 4 inches (and also still lifts up if needed) to allow for favorite beverages in the console AND to allow our arms to still rest on the armrest. I'll do the beta testing.

Jay, I bought 2 house door hinges from Home Depot, just for that reason.

My first plan: I planned to weld them together, and attach them to the little hinge on the cover, in a "Z" formation. This would allow the arm rest to lift up, and lower back down about 3" to the rear. I haven't done this, yet, although I did remove the screws on the rear hinge, and slid the armrest back a few inches, to see how it looks. It worked O. K.

My next plan: I decided I would find an armrest cover on eBay, and peel back the leather, and saw it in half, and remove about 4", then fiberglass it back, and replace the leather. This would expose the cup holders all the time.

My next plan: I also thought about just taking a big drill, and cutting a round hole in the top, that lined up with the existing cup holders, or cutting off the front of the armrest, and having an upolstery shop recover it.

My final plan: So far, I just live with the fact that I can only get the small drinks at the 7-11. I have only crushed 1 styrofoam cup, and I punched a straw through the bottom of a second one, in the last year .

That IS EXACTLY how the center console is set up on the BMW X5 - It has a double latched box (top AND bottom compartment) where the whole top cover assembly can slide forward about 4 - 6 inches for getting more into "elbow range -

At least that is the design on our '01 X5 - Check the design out for yourself - and I'm in if someone take the time to rig up something similar for the Q !

If I can snag a console from a wrecked X5 - I'll see if it can be kicked into shape to fit onto the Q
