Not only that...but our level of technology allows the few to support the many. A practice that would have driven us extinct a thousand years ago.Encryptshun wrote:I don't want to derail the thread, KayVee, but you hit it spot-on.
The news exists to make money (except for public radio/PBS), which means they serve up whatever will sell money for their advertisers. I personally believe that we Americans have wallowed in our own pampered mediocrity and cultural stagnation for so long that we have had to resort to gloating over the misery of others in order to make ourselves feel better. Self-worth by degredation of others rather than by aspiration to higher standards, you see.
Talk shows, reality TV, and the news are all just manifestations of the same thing -- we are being told to consume, which makes us fat and lazy, and then given programming to watch that makes our fatness and laziness seem not so bad after all, which then lets us feel better about consuming even more. And so the cycle continues.
Absolutely. Make the punishment fit the crime for a change.ADDirishboy wrote:We need to implement torture in these cases. Seriously, I feel like implementing a sentence that involves MONTHS of endless pain and suffering would deter a lot of people from committing these crimes in the first place.

crazy West Virginian killers.
"ALTON, Ill. — Authorities in southwestern Illinois say a suspected copper thief was severely burned when he allegedly cut into a power line at a utility substation.
Investigators identified the suspect only as a 30-year-old Alton man. Madison County authorities believe he was trying to steal copper from the Ameren substation Sunday in Alton when he tapped into a 30,000-volt power line.
People who heard his yells for help found him naked and screaming in pain. His clothes either burned off or were blown away.
Ameren says the incident reflects the dangers of copper theft around such electrical equipment. The utility notes the property was fenced and gated.
There's no word Tuesday on the suspect's medical condition or any charges in the case."
