Because that's how they were marketed. Truth be told, I call it both. If someone asks me what kind of 240 I have, I say "fastback." But, in casual conversation, I refer to it as a hatchback.IWannaS15 wrote:Agreed!!
And why do hatch owners insist on calling them 'fastbacks'? Having 'fast' in the name doesnt make it any quicker.
LOL, My thoughts EXACTLY!themadscientist wrote:

I have a system for what is a fast back and what is a hatchback. Anything with a flat faced hatch (ala Civic hb, Golf, whatever) is a hatch. Anything where the hatch lifts up and the glass is near horizontal is a fastback. Such as late 1960's Mustangs, Corvettes, Integras, 300ZX's, and of course the 240SX hatch. I believe the body style was originally named such in the 60's because it was a significant aerodynamic improvement over the other body styles of the time. The air flowed over the top and was allowed to gently move downward before it got to the end of the car. This reduces turbulence and low pressure behind the car, hence reducing drag.IWannaS15 wrote:Agreed!!

Yes. Fastbacks do not always even have hatches. Most early fastbacks had fixed rear glass and trunks. It's the lines of the body that determine a fastback, not the type of cargo cover. The 240 is a hatchback AND a fastback.dfw240_EE wrote:I have a system for what is a fast back and what is a hatchback. Anything with a flat faced hatch (ala Civic hb, Golf, whatever) is a hatch. I've found that the kind of girl that will judge you based on the car you drive isn't worth knowing. Now, the kind of girl who can differentiate between the fastback and the coupe, heh, that's another story.tonynalli wrote:... and ive found that more girls liek the coupes better. but to each his own
Hell yeah!!! Verts rule!!!Florida240sx wrote:Fastbackl/hatchback....who really cares. Was marketed that way but I refer mine as a hatch all the time. probably because the moderators didnt catch it in time. At least people aren't flaming each other and there is actually a good discusion going on. While on the topic, how come noone has ever made a poll about this?xekushnr wrote:so...why wasnt this thread closed as soon as it was posted?
Good explanation on fastback vs hatchback. I tend to use them intrechangably, but there is a difference.bryanmenard wrote:Because that's how they were marketed. Truth be told, I call it both. Also, I think a hatchback better describes a VW Golf or GTI....THAT is a hatch. The 240SX is so sleek....just makes it seem more of a "fast" than a "hatch"
You learn something new everyday, I didn't mention it last night, but I never knew that there was a trunk equipped fast back. Shows how much I know about old cars. I guess when I think of it the later model Supras were fastback-ish cars with trunks. In fact alot of cars these days have roof lines that slope into the trunk (often at the expense of rear headroom!).MinisterofDOOM wrote:Yes. Fastbacks do not always even have hatches. For instance:This 1968 Ford Galaxie 500 XL is a fastback. It has a trunk, so it's not a hatchback.
This Corolla is a hatchback, but not a fastback.
And the corvette fastback, just like the 180sx, is both a fastback bodystyle and a hatchback cargo cover.
Fastback is a BODY style, like Coupe, and not a name for the cargo lid, like hatch.
