COOLING FAN can suddenly be heard running loudly

MY 06 M35 Somtimes after a short drive I hear what sounds like a cooling fan. Had the car six yers and do not rember ever hearing it before have driven to nyc several times a 4hr drive nothing.Now i got 6miles and as i park the car the fan goes off i did not even know the car had a cooling fan. Any input would be greatly appreciated thanks
