What I find odd is many complain of the tread life, yet they have a 50K warranty, if they are wearing out that quickly is anyone making warranty claims? the stock RE050 has a treadwear of 140 and people claim 10-20K miles on those, and the DWS has a treadwear of 540 and I know there is some BS to those numbers, but I would think you can get 20-30K out of a tire with a treadwear of 540?? Or are people just not maintaining the tires? I keep my tires 3-5psi over inflated and rotate balance every 6K miles.

The DWS is a newer version of the old ContiExtremeContact. I got poor tread wear on those older Conti's and have complained so herein, as have many. I just changed over to the DWS about a month ago, so I have no comments yet.

The DWS is still fairly new on the market and so I would not expect much feedback yet on tread wear. Szh is so far the only person I've seen herein w/such complaints about the new DWS. But then he's one of those insane enthusiasts who like a cat leaves their scent everywhere. Whatever you guys do, DO NOT BUY GOODYEAR EAGLE GT's. I have them on my car and after 5000 miles of careful driving since Jan '10, all four tires have INNER sidewall damage. And two of them are splitting on the inner sidewall.

Just replaced my 050's with DWS (245/40/19) ~800 miles (ALL DRY) on them so far. It really just boils down to the compromises you are willing to make. Just my opinion, but if I was to use the car on the track (it'd be a crap autocrosser, although fun) I would use dedicated track tire for this car.

My initial review:

PRO's
- Less road noise (even on crappy Texas FM roads)
- Soft(er) sidewall translates into less noise over expansion joints and better freeway cruising ride
- Tramlining seems better so far; we'll see if that changes with wear

CONS
- Soft(er) sidewall translates into turn-in being NOT as crisp as the RE050
- Less overall grip...may even feel just a bit more oversteer(y) toward the limit..most likely easily adjusted with tire psi - haven't tried yet
- Driving Nannies kick-in felt earlier in aggressive driving - very annoying

SUMMARY
The car is used on the street exclusively so the trade-off of using an All-season tire is a no brainer really if you live in an area that could get bad weather, like north Texas. Since the car is used exclusively on the street, in a weather hell-hole, and the DWS's are quieter and have softer sidewalls than the RE050's the DWS's, so far, feel like a great compromise All-Season tire. I have no wet weather/snow stories to tell yet so I have no other comparisons. More to follow when the weather turns to crap....or will it? never know here  so far in 2010 we've had over a 100°F weather swing; from 9°F to 110°F :wtf2:

So Antzrus, you still diggin' the DWS? I'm now about 11K on mine and after the last rotate/align found my old friend tramlining has returned. Not like on the Goodyear OEM, but certinaly more pronounced than when the Contis were new. I generally agree with the poster commenting on the softer sidewalls, but I personally prefer the softer ride to the harsher feel of firmer sidewalls on the M. That is probably my bias coming from an Avalon, which is about as soft and floaty as it gets, so partly my conditioning. Tread wear on the DWS seems about average, so no complaints. I still love my M and I'm not ooking for a change, even with more tramlining.

The Avalon is the ultimate Geezer-Pleaser as it ticks all the right boxes; Inexpensive, like riding on a cloud, quiet, decent mpg....did I mention inexpensive?

I'm considering one for business use :chuckle:

I just switched from the old ExtremeContact to the DWS less than 1k miles ago. So far I have no complaints. The DWS is even quieter than the old Conti's and tramlining is gone-as it was at about 99.5% w/the old Conti's. It is still early in its release and the miles will start to mount in the next year or so and we'll see if this happens for this tire. Sorry to hear about it returning for you.

Hey, I can't complain about its snow/ice properties; getting a real workout so far this winter here in WA and around Rossland, BC Canada.

Yeah, the Avalon is the best value in that class, just like the M is the best value in its class. But VERY different cars. :yesnod

nemo1 wrote:Pretty funny Antman. How are those contis? finally had a few inches of snow in St Louis to give mine a test. As expected, they performed great! Have about 6k miles on them with little if any visible wear. That said, maintaining proper air pressure seems key. Just had them rotated an noticed significant tramlining yet again. then realized the dealership had pumped up my rt front tire to 38 cold. Not sure why?

My original RSA's were already showing significant wear at 6k miles.
The Conti's are excellent in the snow, as well as all the other road conditions I've had them on. This tire is a precursor of the final step; a truly all season making summer/snow tires obsolete.

What's w/the tramlining? It came back???? I keep mine at 33 psi. 38 psi-maybe he thought you were going up to Fairbanks Alaska where it's so damn cold you need it that hi..?

If you are getting tramlining then it may be time to check the toe

I just put DWS's on the sedan to replace some Hankook Ventus S4's which were supposed to be real "all season" but absolutely sucked in the snow. So far so good.

"So far so good?" Where do you live? Do you get any heavy duty Image snow?

Everyone saw my video of me playing in the snow. The DWS is where it's at. I can drive normally (not WOTing or purposely whipping the car around) and it stays true and steady in the snow with AWD on and VDC on. Great tire. I don't mind driving in the worst of conditions now. We're supposed to get like 6inches again tonight. 6 inches? Puhleeze.

Mid-central. No, not so much in most circumstances. The Hankooks could not deal with a couple inches on the ground and thus far the DWS have been fine.

We've only been getting dustings of 1-2" thus far.

IlyaKol loved your snow shenanigans. Yeah guys, the DWS seems a damn good tire so far; especially in the snow. But then the snow tire guys have a point-if you live in Fairbanks or some such place. I'll be interested in how the DWS stands up to the miles. My old ContiExtremeContacts were almost as functional as these, but they were looking severely worn after only 30k miles.

Oh yeah. Deep snow pulled up my plastic skid plate. So I had a sheet metal one made. No problems now; like an M-1 Abrams! Image

I played around in a parking lot with 3"+ of snow and it did well. Not perfect, but what I expected them to do with a 300hp+ RWD vehicle. For an all-season they work quite well.

A 2,000 mile update on the DWS. '06 Sport
Tramling is really non-existent now.
Night-and-day difference in road noise vs RE050's.
Sidewalls are very soft vs RE050's - that said this car does NOT see the track and these tires have plenty of grip in very hard cornering (very hard for the street that is).
Still very happy with the purchase and would recommend them to anyone as long as they understand these tires do have softer sidewalls and a bit less grip than the RE050's.
