Ok before anyone starts bashing me for not reading, I have read hundreds of different reviews and forums ranging from honda, mazda, nissan, infiniti, and all the cars they make i.e 350z, rx8, s2k, and a whole lot of other vehicles and there reviews on the individual reviews of a specific brand of coilover on that specific vehicle. When it comes to dropping about $1000 on something, I would like to consider all options and opinions.

I guess my question is, for right around $1000 what is the best coilover for a nice street right and adjustable for occasional track.
I am leaning torwards getting Apex'i N1 ExV's, but it is alot of money and I have never bought coilovers before. Is there something just as good for cheaper? Valving, mono-tube, digressive compared to aggressive spring rates. Its hard to make a decision.

wait wait, so you want springs that get softer as they compress more? so as soon as you hit the bump your car will just bottom out?

i think you need to do a bit more research.. why not get a strut & spring combo? it will get you lower, with MUCH better daily drivability.

I was sooo ready to just barge in here, post this: the-coilover-thread-t475297.html and start calling ppl noobs, until I read this:

OP, you have good tastes, my fine sir!

The Apexi's often get overlooked in all the crowd of PBM/Megan/Stance/Fortune Auto/whatever hype. I have been looking into them myself. Reviews say they definently have better ride quality than Megan and PBM, which is very important to me. But also important to me are: how much backspace do they allow for wheel clearance & how low do they go?

Here's some samples showing how low they can go:

Image
I know the first one isn't maxed out but I have no idea about the other two... :gotme

Now, as far as how much backspace they allow for wheel clearance? I haven't gotten a clear answer on that yet. But the older model that the N1 EXV's replaced (N1 Pro's) could fit 17x10+18 RPF1's under stock front fenders without spacers.

That, sir, is a BIG deal. Find me another sub-$1000 coilover that can do that without spacers or extended coilover brackets. But the question remains to be answered as to whether the EXV's have the same amount of backspace clearance as the old discontinued Pro's...

Your google must be broken or something. 8kg fronts and 6kg rears. The usual...

I can tell you what I do NOT recommend

1) spring/strut combo
2) K-Sport
3) Ebay

Not recommended:

Most Asian coils.

Seriously, they're all about going low and full stiffness. It sucks.

Save up and either do Koni/GC or KW. It'll last.

D-MAX
PBM
Fortune Auto

All are right around $1000 and have very good reputations.

Also, JIC makes VERY nice coilovers, if you can find them anymore....they went out of business.

Of course the one place I frequently look at and I don't check. Thanks.

I have owned;

KYB ADJUSTABLE STRUTS AND TIEN S-TECH SPRINGS.....If you want to COMFORTABLY daily your car this is an option. Not the best for handling tho and you have little to no adjustibility.

MEGAN RACING TRACK COIL OVERS.....If your a track rat, these are great, affordable well made coil overs with a lot of adjustment. You WILL be dodging pot holes in an effort to save your back (especially if you have a racing seat)

Apexi N1 EvX......These are for the occasional auto x or track guy. Plenty of adjustments and surprisingly street-able. Does great for touge driving.

Fortune Auto - More for getting that "Slammed" look. I'd recommend these for something pretty that rarely sees the track. Also not bad for a comfortable daily drive.

If I could do it again I would have gone with Apexi. Probably one of the most versatile coilover in its price range.

Stance. Sometime I forget that I have coilovers. Ride is so smooth on the highway, but corners amazing at the same time. I'd definitely buy again. You can make make frame rails touch the ground if you want with Stance.

Takumi & Gabe... Any input on my earlier backspace question about the Apexi EVX's? I'm down to choosing between them and Megan Streets with their 25mm extended brackets.

I wanna be able to fit 17x10+20 with 245/40's under stock fenders up front. I know the Megan's can make it happen, but I'd rather go with the Apexi's if they'll work...

Takumi, any pics of your car with the Apexi's?

I have Tein HA's with their upper pillow ball mounts and front camber plates. Awesome quality and rep, but they are a bit stiff on bumpy roads. Since I do not drift and rarely make it to the 1/4 mile, it remains my weekend toy. I'd like a bit more comfort, but ability to stiffen it up a bit in the rear ( :chuckle: ) for the ocassional 1320 blast. I'm thinking of selling the Teins and going with Apexi N1 EvX or Fortune Auto simply by recommendations.

i was thinking about these for my s14. planning on running 18x10+30 245/40/18 all around. maybe some spacers.

i have some time to pick between coilovers. i had tein basics on my other car and they were ok, kinda stiff.

Best advice! Koni/GC will beat the s*** out of most if not all sub $2000 OTS coilovers. It takes a little work, knowledge, and research to make them but they are worth it. I trust the words of the guys over on Nissan road racing, since they almost are all racers and have extensive knowledge about suspension.
