Sweet man. I'm probably still 6 months away from being an 18.1 but I've been kicking around the industry as a deconner and a jr HP here and there for about 8 years. I just sold my soul again and I'm going to be the decon lead for containment at Indian Point in a couple weeks. Have you ever been out east? I've been to Point Beach a few times and I see a lot of west coasties there.
So how far off do you think I am on some of this stuff? Go ahead, it's ok.
Oh, and OREX FTW. I hate cotton PCs
I haven't been to any of the north eastern plants. I live in Michigan and work Cook when I can, also been to Palisaides. I have worked a couple of southern plants (Hatch and Vogtle) but try to stay out west when I can. I guess all in all I have been to around 17, 18 plants. I started out in 1990 at Newport News ship yard, went through the Navy 108 quals, did enough time to be an 18.1 and hit the road.
I am currently at Diablo Canyon (contractor Holy Grail we like to call it) for the steam generator replacement. The weather is great in the winter so I try to stay out west during outage seasons when it's cold in Michigan.
It is great to see that you are genuinely interested in progressing in this field and are educating yourself on the subject. Also great that you are sharing the info. with folks that maybe don't know about nuclear power. I love our industry, the technology is so interesting and the fact that it provides clean power is very cool.
Jr. HP and 18.1 are such tough positions. It is hard to find enough work in a reasonable amount of time to get to 3.1 so you end up getting sidetracked by doing decon jobs that don't count toward your time. Gotta make a living... Keep at it and you will be there, I think it is worth it with the way our industry is growing. You just can't beat the time off during the summer, I am looking forward to around 20 straight weeks off this year
