Hey All,

Is there any installation kit available so we can upgrade the factory unit and put in something newer?

I have an 06 M35x.

Not that I am aware of. Remember, all those units (and most cars) use specifically designed wiring harness. If you change anything like this, chances of finding a 'kit' with a matching harness that fits your car are as follows: Bob Hope and No Hope.
Perhaps other members have tried it and will respond.

I remember years ago one or two members changed their head units. It does require custom wiring work of course, and you have to remember that the stock head unit also has the navigation voice in it, so you will lose your nav if you change. Probably not a big deal these days since whatever you replace it with will probably either come with google maps or have easy phone integration for running maps on your phone. Back when these 06's came out the iPhone wasnt even invented yet, bluetooth music was just about to become a real thing, the Razr phone was the big deal, and there was no good google maps on phones since there were no smartphones yet. lol. So most people back then didnt have easy maps integration on new head units.

My main gripe about these old cars is lack of bluetooth music streaming, as phones are moving away from headphone jacks. So a while ago I bought a bluetooth receiver from amazon with A2DP, AptX, and Bluetooth 4.0 low energy and all that. I plug it into my rear cigarette lighter and leave it under the seat. So now my car has bluetooth audio streaming. Doesnt integrate with stearing wheel controls which sucks, but if your phone support music control with the volume buttons while the screen is off then it works pretty well.

EniGmA might be referring to the car computer by user TDot. It was a thing of wonder.

More recently, I saw through the M Facebook group a post by this company that will "modernise" your existing head unit - basically change the graphics and functionality to be like the 2011+ Ms among other models. I think the person selling the service is in Europe, but I'll post the vodeo if I can retrace the link.
Check YouTube for ideas that might not exactly put something different in that spot, but might allow you to mirror your devices.

Yeah...this is a company on the Estonian/Russian border. Xanavi is the company name I believe. Problem is, you need to have an Aux port which I think the 06-10's have but I don't think that was an option/capability on the Y51's...

Here is the thread about their stuff on the Y51 forum:

They do various things, not just phone mirroring. They actually update software on existing head units I guess too.
