The CAS wouldn't fail in that way. If you don't know what the splines inside the cam are SUPPOSED to look like, you probably wouldn't be able to tell that they're damaged by looking at them. Also, that splined part is a press fit into the cam, but if it shifted inside the cam, everything would look fine, but the timing would be off.
Set the timing as per the FSM. If you can get the timing right, but you have to have the CAS way to one side to do it, the exhaust came/splines will need replaced. If the timing is still screwy, but better, than MAYBE the CAS is bad, but they don't usually fail that way.
