carpet removal question

first off...sorry for starting another interior strip question. Ok My interior is pretty decent as far as cleanness, but my carpet is terrible for some reason. its super gross and has a big random hole on the driverside. so my question is if i strip all the carpet and remove sound deadening and get it nice and smooth and black will it still look decent? has anyone done this? i dont give a crap about loudness or anything. its a 92 black hatch. pics would be great. all new carpet is too expensive for my cheapness. haha thanks yo

i wouldnt do it. carpet absorbs water. metal doesn't.

On my first s14 I had no carpet.It SUCKED so bad when it rained. water comes through the floor and all that crap.

The floor is a little slipery. As far as has anyone done it? Everyone that has gutted there car. So yes, many. Should you? Up to you. Did I? Yes. Like it? Love it!

If your car is mainly for track then strip everything and make it as light as possible. If you use the car more for the street, strip the rear, pull out the carpet and pull off all the fiber underside that takes up weight. Put the carpet back and maybe use some mats. Especially if you live in a wet place at wintertime, you'll be squeaking and slipping all over the pedals.

lol grip tape is a really good idea go to a skate shop and get MOB griptape is the best. I personally am not down for a footsy slip and slide while i drive though, keep the carpet or look in the classifieds for a part out. I'm sure someone would give up a nice condition carpet for a decent price.

The sound deadening in my foot wells was the worst to remove, i couldnt get all of it out and it would have looked terrible if i tried to paint it. I tried dry ice and heat gun methods.

I did one of those cheap $120 carpet jobs from those carpet websites. THe carpet is not even close to stock quality, doesnt fit quite right and i cut a little short in places, but it still looks better than nothing. Plus it's jet black in color

Oh and it weighed about half of what the stock carpet weighed.

^ not bad looking, does it dry hard or kinda soft feeling? most rubberized undercoatings i've used are kinda soft, so when doing my underbody i went with this stuffits dries really hard and as long as you put on the recommended amount (about 5mm thick) it won't chip off. i love it for the underbody but it woudl probably work well on the interior as well

Using truck bed lining is definitely a good idea. You could bondo the holes and then put a thin layer of truck bed lining throughout the stripped interior.

dont even think about going gutted out. people only do it if their not going to use their car as daily cars or they just dont care about the need of it. but lemme tell you: i go to south carolina all the time. i got my car in braselton georgia and had to go home in it [1 hr.] drive. my s13 was gutted out to the black flooring and lemme tell you all i could feel was heat. not only was the sound annoying as anything but that heat will kill you if your driving your car for a while. even in the summer. and carpet expensive? your kidding me.

go to walmart. first buy your gray/black carpet. they have it in rolls i believe 4x6 or 3 x 6 cant remember. but i bought some rolls and it was only 8 dollars per roll.

as for the heat insulation/sound deadening.

go onto ebay.

they have this heat insulation thing/sound deadening that is 32 square feet for only 30 bucks plus free priority shipping which you get in like 3 days guaranteed.

im telling you thats only like 60 bucks.

if your worried about doing it yourself its easy:

just go find some aluminum foil, mold it to the flooring of your car[note to remove those door panels or w.e if you'd like + seats/seat belts.[since their automatic generated] then pull it out.

put it on the bottom of the heat wrap/insulation. and just cut to a reasonable length.

keep doing that. and then once you got that; just get the carpet use the heat/sound insulation as a template. and there you go.

as for adhesive. go use 3m auto bonding spray.

its roughly 18 for a bottle that i got at autozone.

you spray 3 times over each surface. let it dry. then just bond both of them together by applying pressure.

i would do the carpet and the heat insulation at the same time.and then bond it to the flooring of your car.

thats only like 80 dollars to do it yourself.

and it'll look clean.

trust me its just so dirty and scratched up with no carpet.

I spent hours and hours doing this..

#1. Use dry ice, makes everything soo much easier#2. Use goo-gone to remove remaining parts(Except to spend like 6+ hours to get interior clean.)

I then used durabak on the floor. It helped with the heat-transfer and quieted down the car a good amount. It doesn't add but probably 1/2 the weight you take off by removing the tar/sound deadening. I swear it also "stiffens" the chassis up a little tiny bit.

Only think is that when it's wet its still slippery. But thanks to that screwing genius up there with the grip tape Idea I'm going to fix that problem soon.
