possibly the air intake, my cousins nissan frontier whistles like crazy after 3k when he added his k&n filter. maybe a leak or somethin

possibly a vacum leak or exhaust leak, try spraying all your vacum hoses and intake mani with brake clean while it is running if it sputters or dies that is your prob

After my fiance dropped '98 GSX cams into his '92 N/A Talon, he also has a turbo-like whistling noise as he accelerates.

I'm guessing that isn't your problem, however... My guess would also be some sort of a vacuum or intake-related leak.

My car started doing it this winter as well, starting at 2k and up to 3.5 (then engine noise drones it out) it makes a "sweeeeee" type sound, and I think it's either the intake (which usually sounds more "swoooo") or some snow on my car makes the air go by weirdly....also, the hatch might make some noise if it's not completely sealed (seals gone bad or something). AND I heard in some cases it might just be tire noise. I just put on winter tires (lots of soft noise making tread) and I think they could be part of the noise....who knows...

actually they sell this thing here that you stick in your muffler and it tweets like a bird, really friggin loud. Dump trucks use them too "dump-bling"? except those sound like a pissed off teridactyl, deafening. I hate those things.

I hear the same noise as well, kinda like a bov right? I aksed all my 240 buddies, one in particular who knows them inside out. I'm like, "WTF is that?" Pointed it out to him, and he said its just a normal sound the cars make, he had 2, and both of them made that sound.

wwwwwhhhhooooooooosssshhhhhhhhhh sound, right? Between shifting?

my intake sounds like bbbbbbwwwwwhhhaaaaaaatttttttttttttt at wot, not like a bov.

I checked for vacuum leaks with a propane torch, not that.

Belts are a possiblity, maybe the alternator belt? Doesn't matter if AC is on or off in my case, so i doubt its those belts.

I have no hatch, and it wouldn't whistle when between shifts if it was a wind noise issue, it would whistle all the time. I recently swapped winter tires on, haven't listened for the souind recently, but I'm sure its still there.

the A/C belt thing sounds interesting to me, 1991240xs, did you read that article on NICO or elsewhere, if you remember. How can you tell if you AC belt needs to be replaced, just a visual inspection? Push on the belt and check for tension? Can we set the tension ourselves? ah, time to start a new thread someone....

good luck, let us know if you figure it out, thanks

very sexy, but back to the point at hand, I also think it's your firty filter, try that. Back when I had my 00 si my CAI would be so dirty it would make the same noise around 3-4krpm too, clean it with some KN filtercharger you should be good.

I declare a new topic of this post.

What does a chick with the appreciation of a great vehicle and the brains to know one do-hicky from the next look like? I have never seen one and am curious as to where I can get one of those.

check your cat and see if it's rotted out. Mine did and it made a that sound. I guess all the exhaust gases are whirling and cauing the noise.

do you have a CAI? my 240sx made a "turbo noise" at WOT cuz i had an exhaust leak, and no cat...it was sucking air in really fast or something? but i got the leak fixed and no more noise, kinda miss it though it sounded pretty kick ***

Do you still have your stock muffler?

Could be your muffler breaking up from the inside.

If it's a whistle then its probably a belt, but if its a whistle like a spooling turbo after a certain rpm, then I think its piping. check your header for hairline cracks or it could be a leak on a gasket.

All right, I remember someone saying this and it probably isn't the cause, but you never know........

If your transmission is running very low on fluid, it makes a very recognizable turbo whine sound at mid t high RPM's. Maybe that's why, over 3k, you start to hear something. The only drawback to that explanation is that you would definately hear it in the cab near your right arm.

maybe its your mechanical fan, i know that thing makes a loud whooosh type sound when you accelerate and its engaged, other than that, maybe its something on your driveshaft or something, that makes noise as it passes through the air. just throwin up ideas here.
