Whats up guys/girls? I was woundering what everyone thinks about the cvt trans(2.5s) holding up to a turbo. Will the transmission last or just fold under the power? Because of the smoothness and low rpm drop when shifting will the turbo not lag as much and just scream power? Can anyone help me?

Is the trannys different for the v6 to the 4 cylinder? What is your boost at and do you get a lot of lag when the car shifts?

the only turbo'd CVT'd AC I know of is back to stock right now so the dealer can fix the transmission.

the CVT is a CVT - there is no difference between the 2.5 CVT and the 3.5 CVT except for the final drive ratio...

there has to be a difference, if the 2.5 has some 100hp and 100torque less than a 3.5, the turbo on a 2.5 would hold up just fine. Realisitically you are only adding about 70hp typically on a turbo anyways. Just to throw some more banter food out there.....

As for a turbo on a 3.5, i wouls assume after all the banter from above that the transmission can't hold up on the extra power. After reading how nissan's cvt actually works, its a delicate component and i can see it being easily stressed unlike a regular transmission.

I found out this weekend that the belt wasnt the problem. An actuator or solenoid in the transmission couldnt handle the heat generated and caused it to fail. so with lower boost (3-5lbs) it should be ok on a stock transmission. To me, not really worth it on a a CVT car, I would rather have a manual and be able to boost up to 7-11lbs depending on tuning, and really enjoy the power of the turbo

Makes sense, CVT's get pretty hot, its no wonder they have such a big cooling system. I wonder if the CVT's on the 09 Maxima's can handle it though. Nissan says its a newer version of the Xtronic CVT and they are already just shy of 300hp.

do they make a transmission cooler for the cvt? and if so that would help out and make it a lil safer wouldnt it.

Blake did put a transmission cooler on his car now to help handle the extra heat. Time will tell if its going to hold up

The first time went did this turbo setup without transmission cooling, and the transmission dumped in 2 weeks. This time, we put in a massive transmission cooler that has been holding the boost fine for 2 months. Now, I know the tell tell signs that my transmission was about to go, from the last time I went through this. They have yet to raise their ugly head this time around

Pressure solenoid inside the transmission gave out. Overheated, and melted. The stock CVT transmission temps operate around 180-220 degrees. With the turbo, ours got over 260 degrees, and grenaded. This time around we installed temp gauges in the CVT fluid line, after the transmission cooler, and temps stay between 120 and 160 degrees at all times.

Also, the stock Altima Coupes' manual transmission won't handle the torque amounts over 8 psi. It unlocks itself and throws the car into neutral, if it feels this over torque condition.

I must applaud you for experimenting. There HAS GOT to be other people who try and develop a reliable, tested method to boost a CVT. Nissan seems like they want to use it for a long time to come.

What kind and where did you mount it?I'm going to put in an oil cooler and trans cooler but don't have an ideal location since the FMIC is where they would normally be put for air flow.

Well, If you look at my signature, you'll see the STILLEN front fascia. We mounted the cooler right behind the top grill. Its a B&M transmission cooler.

There are a few Built Altima motors out there, just like the Maximas
