sounds like the bulb is coming to the end of its life..

Time to pick up a pair of brand new D2R bulbs...

If you buy just 1, then one will be blue/purpleish, and the other will be bright white.

okay... Don't jump into the gun on thinking it is the bulbs.

understand that sometimes it is not fully ignited. It happens. I'd say keep on driving it for a few more days and see if it does the same thing every single time. If it no longer appears... don't worry about it.

If the problem persist or intermittently, switch your left bulb to your right and vice versa. If the problem persist in your driver side, it is the ballast/igniter. If the problem now move to your passenger side, it is your bulb.

A pair (2) of hella/osram/phillips hid bulb will cost you around 60$ shipped. It is possible to get it up to 6000k for those 3 brands but do not go with any other brand. Stay with O.E. Expect pay up to 100$ for 6000k for hella/osram/phillips brands.

good luck

and dont waste your time with any other bulb besides 4100k.. Anything higher than that, and you loose intensity

that is untrue because 4100k happens not to be white light. It is below, while 6000k is over. I have hella 4200 or 4100k bulb. They have a yellow tint to them.

Did you know some manufacturer's O.E. is already at 6500k? Actually let's bring out the 2 standards: D50 and D65 (USA use D50, 5000k... europe use D65, 6500k)

At around 5500k is what human eye call "white" or "bright light". However, a lot of HID company manipulate the color temperature chart so some people might be confused as to what human eye would perceive as "white light". I have seen manipulated color temp charts that suggest that 4100k is where it turns blue. This is crap.

around 5000K would be the highest I go.

I think your only choice is the phillips 4300k ds2 / dr2 bulbs made for factory harness.

the other HID bulbs are made to fit into ballast harness.

Q_SHIP: it could be anywhere between 4100k to 6500k for factory spec. This is indisputable.

as long as you stay between this range and use O.E. bulbs, you are safe...

What is disputable is opinion. Some people would not go over 4500, someone just said he wont' go over 5000k. I personally won't go over 6000k

The Q45 uses Phillips 85122 rated at 4100K as the OEM capsule. All HID capsules color shift up, so if you plan to replace the dying capsule, you will need the Phillips 85122CM. The Phillips 85122+ or 85123 may also work tho they are rated somewhere around 5000K new. The 85123 is the OEM capsule being used in most HID equipped cars in the last few years.

From http://faqlight.carpassion.info/hl-hid-bulbs.htm :

What does the P/N on Philips bulbs mean?

85122: D2S. Color is bluer white with slight greenish tone.85122+: D2S CM (Plus). 5000K. Aftermarked only. Ment to pair up with used 85122. Released Q4, 2002.85122WX: D2S Ultinon. Aftermarked only. Released Dec 2001. Ultinons label on bulb were later relabled to " Philips BL-2 Non automotive use"85123: D2S. Color is bluer white with slight purple tone. Not officially on Philips product list. Nevertheless, it is found in some BMW OEM HID headlamps. Click here for a color comparison to 85122.85407: D1S. Integrated ignitor.85407+: D1S CM (Plus). Integrated ignitor. Aftermarked only. Ment to pair up with used 85407. Released Q4, 2002.85126: D2R.85126+: D2R CM (Plus). 5000K. Aftermarked only. Ment to pair up with used 85126. Released Q4, 2002.85126WX: D2R. Ultinon. "CM" means color match. There is a 4 letter date code following, which looks like this: L029, C024 etc. What they mean is probably not very useful unless you do warranty work for Philips.

It looks like the bulb of choice is the 85126(D2R) and not the 85122(D2S).

you'll need something like this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...QrdZ1

it will hook up directly to your factory ballast connector.

do not get the aftermarket HID bulbs you find in aftermarket kits. Those are meant to connect to aftermarket ballast connection, NOT directly into factory ballast connector.

My mistake, forgot that the Y33 used reflectors. I've been dealing with projectors on my F50 and my R6. Sounds like the proper bulb would be the 85126CM assuming that both the bulbs were installed as a pair and one of them is worn. The other is good and would have color shifted.

Lastnight I pulled up to a store front window to use the reflection to watch what was happening.

I flip the lights on and everything was normal. about 1 minute after the lights were lit, the drivers side faded to purple. Any thoughts?

true, 4100k isnt the blue/whitest color

but it does put out the maximum lumens for 35W hid..

Lumens = brightness

Holy crap!!

I just called my dealer. The ballast $370.99 and the bulb is $224.54

Does that seem right?

Also, I have decided that I would like to be around 5000k-6500k. Is that safe for use with my factory ignitor boxes?

I DON'T wand the color to be yellow, purple, or pink. Bluish with maybe a spike of green is what I want. I do need it to plug directly into my boxes.

One other thing, do the ballasts hold any kind of energy that I should worry about when disconecting them? I'll disconect the battary but to they have anything stored in them? I don't want to get shocked.

q_ship, do the test I asked to figure out what is wrong 1st.

You still do not know whether it is the bulb or the ballast. Don't waste your time doing guestimates, just do the test.

The priced quoted from the dealer is correct. However you can get new bulbs for a margin of that price and the ballast for about 100$ a pop used. Once you have that figured out we can help you further.

Oh trust me. I count on it. i'm not spending the money unless I know what it is. I'm just trying to get a worse case senario.

But, before I do the test, Do they hold any kind of charge to be worried about?

they do but you do not need to worry, it does have an outter casing

I have had... 5 or 6 hid sets in my life so far... I do not believe I was ever in the danger of being shocked since there is no power going through them when I am working on it. Not only that, you are just doing the bulbs and not touching the ballast itself.

If you are a ***** :P you can always use a glove. Real men does not use gloves though!!!!!!111!!!1111111111111111

I don't have q45... but from what I can tell, yes it is reflective housing

honestly though, d2r/d2s is exchangeable. I wouldn't mind putting d2s bulbs in a reflective housing. Some people will whine that it will blind other people, it is really not that bad.
