In the early 1990s, Nissan began to lose their a$$. Producing cars like the Skyline and Z31/32 made them little profit due to the fact of high development cost and what not because the cars were so damn advanced for the day. When it came to the CA18, you see very little cost cutting involved (shot peened rods, cast iron crank w/ an actual girdle, etc) so money was lost in their "Date car" entry. The SR20, with its less advanced valve train and aluminum block was a great way for Nissan to shave off some dough in the 4 cylinder market.
And anyone that wants to make a fuss about the S15 SR and it o-so-great varible timing....varible timing is MUCH better used on N/A engines and is really not that necessary for boosted applications. Varible intake ports and runners is a better place to spend those R&D dollars. Sure, Porsche has Variocam, but that really shouldn't count as that feature is quite obviously utlized on a race designed motor, where every HP counts.
