I just talked to John at Race Engineering. They are going to start stocking (no wait) forged pistons for our beloved CA18DET motor. They are a 83.5mm bore. He quoted me $449 w/pins and locks and $88 for rings. He'll also give you a discount on the pistons if you purchase rods at the same time. This is a great deal (duh!) and in about 3 weeks, they should keep them in stock all the time. He was very impressed with our motors and one of the first things he said was how much more well the construction of the CA was compared to the SR, and he didn't know all that much about them!!! I'm very impressed and very happy. He's supposed to contact me when they get their first shipment in and I have every intention of buying them! You can contact Race Engineering at (561) 533-5500, and ask for JOHN. Tell him I (Ryan Boatwright)sent you and that you're with NICO. Lets show these guys some appreciation!

I will definatly look into that. In a year or so... I should get the swap compleated first, then work on other stuff. These will definatly be in the gameplan.

Man, I would just put the swap off for a little longer and do it while the motor is out of the car. It's a pain to have to take it in and out. Just do it all at once.

I'm thinking of getting another motor, just the block and head, and building that up. I want the CA in my car, and it will probably be a year or more before I could complete a rebuild of the size I want, with money constraints and all. I want to do all my car work without taking out a loan; that's my goal.

don't quote me but I think he said he'd take another 20% off of the pistons, but like I said, I'm not sure on that. He's a nice guy to talk to, give him a call!

They are pretty good and that's where all my pistons came from and they do know of my motors, so go figure. I think I must have one of the most abused stock motor in the performance in the world. And I'm not talking about dyno queens who claim their stock SR20 bottom ends can handle 500+whp. Well, until they've put that 500hp to the test on a highway at suststained speeds, why claim what it can do. It should be like what it can peak at. I can guarantee you guys the results will be different and pop goes the weasels. To be a performance shop, building a performance drag car with a performance engine and claiming to have built the head, but left the bottom end stock, is something that makes me go, hmmm:confused: I see someone trying to sell more SR20s because if the average tuner tried that, they'll get to know the inside of their blocks really quick. I wanna see of these guys pull off what JUN did and let's see how much $$$s get smoked in the process.

Now, back to reality and low budget boosters like most of us, your stock CA pistons, with some fresh rings and rod bearings coupled with a fresh headgasket, should be the cure for the aging CA18DET. But if you wanna upgrade, a set of wiseco pistons and steel headgasket should keep you safely boosting.

I'm actually the 1st they've ever done these for and this was back in 1999. They did nothing for this motor and actually had no clue as to what it was. Everything was 4G63, B and D series honda motors as well as SR20, VG30 and 2JZ.... I will put the smack down with my built motor or blow it up trying and make the U.S. market recognize that these motors do have a cult that think the world of them. Not taking anything away from any of the other motors, but this one has definitely been overlooked. And because it's still being sold, it will be wise of them to start producing parts for us or else;) .

back from the dead..

anyone know if the pistons have the skirt cutout / relief for the oil squirters?

I'm gonna try and get up early enough today to call them before work and ask, and also about getting custom made 84mm 9.5:1 pistons made :D

Is there any chance we could get a picture of the pistons to be offered. I would really like to see pictures of any CA pistons as the only ones i can remember seeing were the ones Dee just recently put up (CP pistons i think). I have not decided which pistons i want to go with yet and alot of it has to do with not being able to see the different designs.

There really shouldn't be too much differences in the designs I wouldn't think. But here is the website...http://www.raceeng.com/

Looks nice, I will definately be picking up a set of those sometime this winter. Although i really only planned on getting the pistons, if the rods come in at a decent price i may consider getting those as well with the discount on the pistons and all.

They have oil squirter reliefs. They are similar to my wiseco and similar to some Arias CA pistons I've seen before.

Naturally I didn't wake up early enough to call and see about getting custom 84mm 9.5:1 ones made, hopefully I can call during lunch :/

Do you really want to raise the compression on an already sensitive motor? Unless you have the proper means of controlling detonation, I strongly urge not trying to jack up the compression.

With good tuning shouldn't be much of an issue. I won't be doing like 25psi or anything silly. If anything with the overbore I won't have to have as much dome to get the same CR.. I might just go to say 9:1 but I want off-boost response and quick spool over super high HP. 250-350 is more than enough for me, and that shoudln't be hard to do on this.

Altho I do realize raising CR on a motor that doesn't like timing advancement sounds somewhat crazy... and possibly is..

if nothing else I'm definately going for the 84mm, that'd give me ~8.7:1 (its like 8.6xxx:1) with flat pistons..

Back from the dead... Did anyone actually ever get pistons from this company? I'm ready to buy piston's now, but I want something custom and am hoping not to have to spend much more than $600. I'm gonna call them tomorrow and see what kind of wait time they've got going on. I'll keep you guys updated. I really want my darn car back....

Well I just got off the phone with them. I'm going to mail them a piston sample today. They are going to make me a piston to my specs so it's a custom deal. I'm happy with the price though. It's gonna be $612 for 4 pistons, rings, and wrist pins. That's not a bad price in my mind. I think it's a 4 week wait, I'll let everyone know what I think about them when I get them back. To be continued....

Damn,

Their prices have gone up dramatically. What pistons are you getting? The wisecos or the CPs? I paid 4 and some change back in 1999 for my wisecos and again in 2000. Shheez, everybody's trying to come up. Even the prices of the CA18s have gone up dramatically.

I got pistons, not installed yet, I'm trying to save enough money to finish the motor build all at once but things keep coming up.. GAR!

look in my thread and somewhere in there are pics..

from the price you were quoted prices have gone up, glad I got mine when I did :D mine were in the $530-550 range I think shipped (custom oversize 84mm but still flat top, did you change CR maybe thats why?) w/ rings wrist pins etc

mine are CP Pistons btw

Dee - I'm pretty sure that they get their custom stuff from CP and their stocking stuff from weisco.

Bio (what the hello is your name man) - I just mailed my sample out today. they should have it this week and get started on it. I did get custom compression ratio and diameter, so that is probabally the reason for the extra cost. Anyway, I'll let you guys know more as I do.

How many of us got pistons from them? There is Dee, me, Jon, biosehnsucht, and one other that I know of.
