well after a certain someone sold me a cheap chinese knock off GARRETT turbo, the compressor blades failed and went through my motor.it is comming out for ANOTHER rebuild...... this motor lasted my a big 1200 miles.....

While the ka-t is out i am just using a stock 180K miles ka24E motor. I did a cold compression test and it was 160 psi on all 4 so its pretty health motor for that much milage. it took me alone 12 hours to take out the ka-t and put in the stock kae. well on with the pics

i love working in a shop with hoists i also found out that my JRC FMIC broke at the mount......stock kaEme... after a long *** day of workafter all that work i didnt get it running..... YET. i think my timing is off.

Sorry to hear about your motor. Did the compressor just blow up or what? How do those pieces make it through the IC and up through all that tubing?

Anyway, which knock off brand was it so people will know to stay away from it.

Last question, how do you like the Gladman manifold?

3 of the compressor blades chipped apart and somehow went through my FMIC and into my motor..... i will prob find them once i tear apart the motor.

The turbo was a cheap *** "TURBO ZY" turbo... ( i should have known) and it is a complete piece of ****!! it has about 5mm of side to side play in it after 1200 miles of use......

the gladman manifold is ok... i have used it on 2 of my kae-t and its held up pretty good so far. I had to grind down the corners by the spark plug holes cause i couldnt get a plug socket past them.... the insides are pretty rough and need to be cleaned up... but it flows pretty well and gets quick boost.

THIS IS AFTER 500 MILES OF USE..... and it only got worse.

How do you like your JRC FMIC. Does the black anodizing hold up well?

yeah the black has been fine.... just that one of the mounting holes broke off causing a 1/2" hole in my FMIC. I had another JRC before and it was great so i think mine may have been welded wrong or something......

Yes i did the swap myself but a car hoist really helps alot. If this motor is healthy and runs good for a few months i may consider boosting it

I think I started a post about ebay turbos. You should post this there for the benefit of the next poor SOB who might be considering buying one of those.

By the way, with your luck you might want to give up the turbo builds and get your self a Volvo.

TURBO ZY? Huh, never heard of 'em... are they an ebay special? I see Ebay has a ton of XSPower turbos... I guess there's a reason Garrett turbo's are so expensive. I'll have to go re-read the post on cheap turbo's mentioned.

BTW I'm jealous of your lift...

what exactly went wrong with the engine you just took out. i had one of those zy junk turbos for my first turbo, it was used and lasted me a week. when my zy took a **** it was competely obliterated , probally far worse than yours but it did not hurt the engine. since then i have been running an xs power turbo i bought from them on ebay and surprizingly it has been good to me and ive been running 16 psi on it since september. i am just amazed that the turbo blew and harmed the engine in your car. post pics of the engine with the head off.

when i get the motor apart i will know for sure what happened to the motor...... i did a compression test and the numbers were terrible.....

this was after i noticed that the compressor blades had chipped off and were no where to be found. i pulled off the FMIC and pressurized it with air (80 psi) and nothing came out of it.... so the pieces had to go somewhere. that is my only guess as to why the comp. is soo ****ed up.

like i said... i will know for sure when i get the motor apart AGAIN.....

Hey Shawn,

I may be selling all my suspension/drivetrain and some other bits.

I kind of need to sell it local, with oem parts in exchange if you know what I mean.

Tein HE coilsS15 hlsd w/output shaftsSPL pro rear upper armsCustom heim T/C rods

And I also might want to get rid of my race seat with brackets, its a momo start fia spec. Brackets are custom and it sits lower than any seat you have ever seen in an s-chassis.

If your interested, shoot me an email. Ive got plenty of fast cars, ive lost some interest in the s13 and wish it was just a bit smaller and lightweight.

I'm still confused as to how the shrapnel would have made it through the IC and all that pipe.

I wonder if it isn't possible that something else happened and caused a massive back pressure to the turbo. Perhaps a smoked valve or some thing.

the compression was pretty bad on all 4 cyl. I pulled out the sparkplugs today and looked inside with a flashlight and saw DEEP verticle scratches up all of the cyl. walls.... the cross hatch from the honeing was all still there but the scratches were deeper than the hatch. I will know more once i pull the head this weekend.

did you not file your file fit rings? a hydrolock from excess oil could break rings probally not all 4 and it would run but smoke badly. oil most likely did not get that far from your turbo though. at this point i am thinking the rings were not set up properly when it was built. who built it, if someone else did and it is thier fault i would say they owe you an engine at thier own expense.

yes i had the bottom end built by machine shop. They did all the machine work and then the assembly. I do not know if they file fit the rings or not. I never had any oil blowing out of my exhaust but i did have to add 1/2 quarts of oil after only 1k miles...... I will be taking ALOT of pictures and sending them to the company that built my shortblock and see what they will do about this...... the motor only had 1200 miles.
