I think that's true, but the Neon's image is hurt by more than just that. The neon isn't just "affordable." It's el-cheapo. The Civic might be a budgetmobile but at least it's livable inside. Neons are apallingly cheap inside and out. Every inch of the car reeks of cost savings. They're the cheapest of the cheapest of the cheap. You would be hard pressed to find a more budget-feeling car out there.
I'd say that's where most of the Neon's negative reputation comes from. While they might be fun, and may even be quick, they are NOT "nice" cars. That's why I never understood the appeal of the SRT4. I don't care how quick it is, who wants to have to drive a car that was made to be as cheap as possible every day? Nothing wrong with saving money but the Neon takes that to extremes. Why buy a Neon when used Civics are just as dependable but much nicer to drive every day?
One of my cousins used to drive a Neon. The first time I rode in it I remember thinking "why would anyone actually pay money for this thing?!"
And of course another strike the Neon has against it is its cute looks. It has the lovable retard thing going on. It's hard to take something that looks like a Pokemon design reject seriously.
Neons might make fun track cars but I can't imagine owning one as a primary means of transportation. And this is coming from a guy who drove an ultra-base-model Ranger for years...with plastic everywhere and no carpet.
