Well here is the entire story. I have had 3-4 cars over the last 10 years, my first “real” car was a 1991 Integra and I had 17” wheels on it with a 45 series tire. I had it lowered pre-fast n’ furious days and it was nice ride and I did destroy all 4 wheels once on 95 South due to road stripping. The contractor had stripped the road up to a bridge and neglected to put any kind of transition between the highway and the bridge concrete. I was paid in full + some for a full set of TSW wheels. I got them fixed and drove the car another 4-5 years with no issue. I was years younger, single, good job and bought the 98’. It already had a set of 20” KMC wheels on it, I still drove the Integra to work 5 days a week.”. I test drove my current 2001 in 2003 and fell in love with the horsepower difference of the 2001 and traded my old one moving the 20” wheels to it. I also sold my Integra for a 95 Accord and drove that to work every day. I always get road hazard on my tires and I think that of the 2-3 full sets of tires I had between the Integra and the first QX4 I may have only bought 2-3 tires full price over 8 years.
Last month I hit a curb and destroyed two wheels, being older rims I could not replace them (not sold anymore) but I got enough of check from my insurance company to cover all 4 of the wheels. It was a real process as I found the wheels and got the tires separately, had them mounted, test fit etc. (Firestone who was one of few who could mount a 22” wheel wanted $45 per tire to mount them, I paid a mechanic under the table at a large vendor $80 for all 4 + a $20 tip.) My truck was at a body shop for a month and I was in a rental the whole time per my insurance. I overhead an Infiniti parts guy “complaining” about how I spent sooo much money on the wheels…HA HA HA, but I was actually wanting a new truck which would cost me a lot more than the $600 in tires spent + $500 shipped for my new QX56 winter wheels (Need machined and tires still.) I will likely drive my 2001 for a couple more years now; renewed and renovated. My insurance company was very generous with me I must say because they could have legally got a away with giving me a check based on depreciation and 2 wheels + 2 tires. You see my insurance didn’t have to cover the other two that were not messed up. 22 inch wheels are not in the price ranges they were 3 years ago when you would spend $6000-$8000. I bought Goodyear tires at $145 apiece and could have gone cheaper than that but I had Goodyear Eagle GT II’s before and were happy with them.
I think if I did drive stock tires the tire roll from the sidewall would scare the mess out of me! I am so use to a 50 serious and now have a 35 series tire. Highway driving isn’t bad at all and after 10 years of instincts devoted to pot hole scanning. I live near DC and the roads near my home are great, downtown DC roads are better than they used to be but you really don’t get a chance to get any speed to have major issues. I drive about ¼ a mile to a commuter bus that takes me to the metro now so my QX4 is a weekend ride at most. I suppose I don’t really know how my QX4 is suppose to feel? I believe in renting cars for trips longer than 4 hours, why not put miles and wear on someone else’s car for $30 a day. Enterprise gives 50% off on weekend rentals?????
I must say… confession…. 22” are not the most responsible choice for some, I knew that when I got them but I also know what I am getting into. There is a risk and even the stock wheels would have been bent from my curb hit. 22” will slow you down as a good thing. I also knew I would get a set of QX56 wheels this summer for next winter and got a set of near perfect ones from eBay for $380, no tires + $120 shipping. I really liked this wheel and didn’t want chrome but could not find them in the time frames I had in silver. I didn’t want anything too “complicated” either if you know what I mean. I’m 33 now…. Maybe I have some “extreme” in me but I have my mind set on a QX56 in flat black with 26” wheels next. I just don’t want a new car payment so like I said I am fine with my truck now for a while. You wheels look great Qxxx4, and most of all your so excited about them that the best part!
I have a 1964 Lincoln Continental that may be blessed with 22" wheels one day.
I will also tell you Qxxx4, don't get too caught up in the size because you WILL get use to the size and they WILL start looking small to you. I can alredy look at my photos (didn't post them) and in some think they are small looking. Not that I would EVER go larger than a 22" like a cynic my respond.
It's no coincidence that manufactures are putting larger wheels on cars, its aesthetically pleasing to some. I am noticing how many factory SUV's have 40, 45, 50 series tires. (Cadillac, Audi, Range Rover, Infiniti)
