Short version, Effective as soon as Friday July 22, 2011 Borders Book stores will begin closing down all remaining stores ans liquidating all assets and terminating 11,000 jobs. So if you have gift cards go cash them in now because they won't be worth anything in the very near future. You can thank Barnes and Nobles, Amazon as well as Borders themselves for getting into the E Book market to late. Guess I'll be getting me some seriously discounted books soon, I took advantage of this when they closed down their Oxford valley store. I'm disappointed by this because personally of I like Borders waaaaay better than Barnes and Nobles and I just got the gf one of Border's E-Readers this past christmas, so there's $150 down the drain.

:/

I like Barnes & Noble more but it was nice having a place to buy Top Gear or other hard to find magazines when there wasn't a B&N nearby.

I used to be a manager working for one of their flagship stores, in fact I was just talking to my old store manager yesterday night about this!

It was a fun place to work, I'm going to miss it... :frown:

My nearest BN has too many self-help books and romance novels. Borders had a downstairs level with all kinds of stuff on business, finance, transportation, and history.

Of course, them MFers don't read! :spitout:

I hate to see the brick and mortar bookstores failing. I would spend hours in my local book store just looking through the shelves for interesting titles. :frown:

I've always been amazed at how much people read books. I can understand text books and books that actually teach you something, but reading for pleasure has always seemed foreign to me.

I don't think recreational reading can be acquired later in life unless you come across a book that really reaches you. I was reading from a very early age and grew up in a home where books were valued and available. I still enjoy a good book, but understand that some don't.

While I find e-readers distasteful and fake much like other people increasingly I think they may expose more potential readers to the written word than and old-school book; there's less commitment to the "book." That's a great thing. Me, I like owning the book in hard cover.

I've only read one fictional book that I've liked in my entire life.

I love going to the bookstore even though I very seldom ever buy anything there. Just as "video killed the radio star", the internet has killed the brick and mortar buildings. Why buy a book from B&N for $10 when I can buy it on Amazon for $1. If you're willing to wait a few extra days, you can get free shipping. It's just the way things go these days.

I'll miss Borders even though once I moved to Tennessee there's not one remotely close to me. Every B&N I've been in felt too pretentious for it's own good - like I needed to be wearing a sweater vest and a have a pipe in hand to be allowed entry. And the employees tend to have quite the stick up their a**.

Borders was cooler & trendier, had more titles of books, movies & music and far better service than its competition. In the land of mediocrity its no small wonder they're closing up shop.

Maybe you're on to something...instead of the sweater vest and pipe I need to un-do some buttons and flash'em a gold medallion with a wookie pelt backdrop!

Actually, though...the minute I said, "Hustler." I'd have some kid selling me a copy of some old b&w movie about pool.

Despite being a bunch of unicycle-riding, PBR-swilling filthy hipsters, Portland knows how to run a bookstore. Powell's is awesome. Portland also knows doughnuts.

When are you going to launch "Brown's Books" as a national chain?

Ive seriously considered getting self-help, fiction, romance novels, comics, pop culture, and other BS genres and going retail, but stores have operating hours. I go to bed at 4am and wake up at lunch.

You could seriously open up a bookstore for alcoholics.

Do you actually work there? I thought you just owned it and staffed someone else to do all the work while you drove around the country.

I went there yesterday. They weren't really trying to clear out. Only a few things were on clearance. Picked up a sweet book on differential equations and Suzanne Collins' "The Hunger Games"
