Yes they are. Get it done. Approx 17 minutes is what it took me from opening the hood to shutting it again.

tightened it and it stopped. at least for now.. well backed it out a bit then put it back on.. so far so good

Yeah, that is what I did at first and it seemed to work. However, when I got the replacement gaskets you could definitely tell the difference. The old gasket was flattened and hardened, so it was not a bad idea to change it.
