um, after reading your years you've held a driver's license/tickets acquired ratio, I'll withdraw my comments about how you should get a bike. Riders need to be cautious and alert at all times, and also need to be 1000% safer than everybody else on the road. IMO, you do not qualify. This high ticket to years driving ratio of yours indicates that you are not a dilligent and lawful motorist. In order to survive as a motorcyclist, you need to be both. perhaps you should not get a bike. I'm not trying to hate.

Yo Smith,

Well the reason most of my fellow riders dont have high ticket ratio is because they dont stop for the flashing blue light. I would never do that, of course. All the cops know me.

But I agree, you need to be a good driver and responsible. I hate reading about fellow motorcyclist in the obituary.

i drive a little fast, yes. but never in residential and the motorcyle presents more dangers which would force me to modify my driving style, which i can do.

Were in Norcal are you? SF is like the Motorcycle capitol of the world! except maybe LA, or perhaps Italy....Either way, you can ride year round, and with no rain for like 8 months of the year weather cannot be an excuse.Saftey can be an excuse however. If you drive fast in your car you may be dangerous on a bike.No one can make this decision for you. When I bought my motorcycle it changed my life, turned me on to a world of excitment and enjoyment I didn't even know existed. I made new friends I wouldn't have had otherwise. Overall a very positive experiance, even with a minor spill.PS get leathers

I got a ZRX1200R, ultimte sleeper, most fun bike on the market. I am currently debating whether to get an SR myself. I would strongly recmmend a bike, however my advice to you is to get some more years of driving before you get a bike or an SR considering your record of tickets. I just got a ticket for doing 125, talked the cop down to about 85 but it still sucked...first ticket in 5 years of riding a bike. Play around with your KA for a while before you get something that can get you into more trouble. Anyhow, a car will never be as fun as a bike.

I have both a bike and an SR car. Bike is mostly relegated to beater parking space duty and I don't drive it much other than to school and what not. I say get the SR, much more enjoyment and use for your dollars...

Or get a cheap bike like me, a bandit 600s...

If you wear PROTECTION on the bike, half of the things you guys are saying wouldn't happen. I've had friends wreck at over 100 with no road rash, no problems. I've also had some die . But, if you wear protection and learn how to ride your chance are a lot greater. Take an advanced riders coarse(Racing school). It really helps.

I'd say go for the bike, but make sure your VERY CAREFUL. Take a riding class, and wear your safety gear.

i am trying to make the same decision u r. i have a 83 virago 750 right now that i have been riding for a few months now and i also have a 93 saturn. once i get back from basic training and tech school i will have enough money to get either a 240 and swap a sr or get a new zx-6r or r6. i am leaning towards a 240 with sr just because my saturn is painfully slow and i have only had the bike a few months so it's still fun. if i didn't have a bike already then i would definatly buy a bike instead. they are just so much more fun and saves on gas money.

It doesnt matter how much gear you wear. Slamming into an suv making a left hand turn in front of you is gonna ruin your day.

I ride with bare minimum gear, jeans, healmet, and gloves. I have a riding jacket, but it dont fit anymore. After doing the high side and low side thing in the same month, I am going to take a riding school, and get me another armored jacket and boots.

Proper gear helps, but when you are cruising about 95 and look down at the pavement going by your feet, you realized that it doesnt take much for you to meet your maker.

Now of course this sounds like I am trying to talk him out of getting a bike. I am not. I just want him and everyone else that haven't ever riden to be aware of the dangers. It is the most fun thing you can do (with out a girl around, that is), but it is also dangerous.

We have a winner. The decision is made.

Welcome to the Motorcycle community. Be safe. Have fun. And visit http://www.stuntlife.com

But dont try any of that stuff until you get good at regular ridding, first.

Jester,I must respectfully disagree.Leathers are designed to prevent abrasion injuries, impact resistance is a minimal component. Granted the elbow/shoulder pads in a jacket will absorb some impact, but you are correct when you say hitting an SUV is gonna hurt. There is really nothing that can be done about blunt trama. Leather pants will make the difference between skinning your legs/*** down to the bone, and getting up to walk away.A 95mph low side is exactly the type of situation where leathers are of paramount importance. Why do you think racers can low side, slide into the marbles, and get up to walk away?

Fast imports are more rare than fast bikes, there is that rareness/coolness factor of a turbo 240 (sr20det), the bike isnt as cool in my opinion. How many of you are all surprised and impressed when a CBR 900 smokes ya?

bikes are awesome, but they're not THAT fast among other bikes, if u ahd a sr in ur 24o, then you'd be able to run other 24os, 35ozs and 3oozx and such, with a bike, cars are not really worth racing, (as it would be no match) and racing other bikes is almost pointless (to me) cause they're so closely matched its no fun, thats my .o2, o, and i HATE to have to hunch over all the time, talk about a back problem< owww

Yup.. Although bikes are cool for racing really fast cars.. I saw a dude with a 92 Mustang LX 5.0 Turbo race a CBR1100RR and it actually took the bike by about a car. The bike dude said he ran 10.3 at the track, the mustang dude does not even have a cage, and got kicked out of the track becuse he said his car ran 15s an ran 11 his first run with no helment.. That's grand...

Radian,I deffinetly agree on that. It isn't the low sides that bother me. It's those high sides and hitting other objects that hurt like hell.

It is deffinetly best to wear full gear, but that dont happen much. Most people aren't gonna wear leathers when it is up in the 90's, Even thou we should. I hope that all new riders do take your advice and wear at minimum a jaket (helmet, gloves, ect).

I was more talking about coming to a stop suddenly. Had a fox run out in front of a guy in a nice right sweeper at about 65 or 70. Stuff like that has started to concern me more than it use to. But picking yourself up of the pavement a few times can do that to you.

Any of you guys heard of or wear Draggin Jeans? Kevlar inserts in the butt and knees. Great product if you want the added protection but dont feel like getting suitted up on those scorcher summer days.

Both myself and another 300+hp Supra guy are looking at getting bikes. I was gonna sell the Supra, buy my 91+ 240 and get a begginer bike until the SR swap later this summer.

Just seems like a cool new world that I haven't played with yet. We're looking at an 84 Honda VF500 and a 89 Kawasaki EX500 as the initial bikes, cheap *** insurance and a cost of like 700$us.

I live out in the country with mostly old ladies as drivers, shouldn't be a terribly dangerous area too learn in. MEh, fast cars are pretty fun for a while, its good too deversify though.

well now i dont know...a 240 with the sr is so tight and my friend is getting a bike, so ill just steal his :) the sr would be cheaper, i dont have to pay insurance on it, is doesnt add a gas tank to the equation, and i shouldnt die in a car, and not too many cars will race a bike, but when my sr beats my friends 300zx tt, that will be so tight that i will crap my pants

Watch out for those old ladies. Had one pull out in front of an old dude with his grand son on the back of his Harley, about three weeks ago. They got screwed up pretty good.

The old woman, asked my friend (first officer on scene), "Did you get that car that hit me?" He told her that there wasn't no other car, and she didn't belive him.

It is sad that they can't see us, even after they about kill us. Riding is alot of fun, but you have to watch out for the cage drivers.

Never, ever ever will you once say "gee, I wish i hadn't gotten this bike". Never, ever, ever, ever. You live in northern Cali?? You live in IMO the best place in the world to ride. DOOD, GET THE BIKE!!!!

You will own every monkey who drives his mom's accord(you probably already own them in your car), the only thing on the road that can keep up with you is another bike. Chicks dig guys on bikes.... this is so true, I'm sure it was the eleventh commandment.

"Women shall surrender their bodies unto the guy on the sportbike."

I thought this thread was dead.

Well since it has been resurected, I have to go to the doctors office office today, to get my arm checked, knee drained, and get set up with a therapist for the motorcycle wreck two weeks ago, where the old lady turned in front of me, sending me over top her cadi. I am getting tired of being x-rayed. I am gonna end up having kids with three arms and green hair.

Ouch. Now that sucks. I got out of this with minor injuries, but I have always been extremly lucky on bikes.

Sucks to be that poor bastard.
