I have a buddy fabbing up a custom top mount s/s header for me with a dsm flange. The original plan was to use a big 16g, but I keep seeing 20g's for sale that don't cost too much more, and flow more cfm's.Which would be the better match for a ca18det? Would the 20g be too laggy, or flow more than I would need? I'm thinking a big 16g would be the better match, but I wanted to run it across the CA experts before I place an order

Big 16g is good for 350hp and 580cfmscompressor=.49ARTurbine Wheel=49.2/56mm diaCompressor wheel=48.3mm/67.9mm dia

20g is good for 380hp and 640 cfms Compressor=.54ARTurbine wheel= 49.2mm/56mm diaCompressor wheel= 52.5mm/ 68mm dia

My mods are 3" turbo back exhaust, front mount ic, walbro 255, dsm 450's, afc2, and eventually a z32 maf

And for kicks, here is the header(not finished yet)

My personal philosophy is to use a turbo that will provide 120% of the flow you will need in your setup that will remain in use. I don't know the rest of your motor and your net goals, but I would probably try and find a decent 16g. Do both units have the same kind of bearings and level of technology?

I'll ask the builder to make sure...but I think the flanges are custom made

I would like to be around 280whp on stock internals if possible....more if possible. As far as I know, both have Journal bearings. I don't think the 20g's I'm looking at are a "true" 20g, I think they are just porting big 16gs, and calling them 20g's.

Based on this compressor map, assuming a constant 90% volumetric efficiency, a CA spends a lot of time in the surge zone and you barely scratch the peak efficiency island.

Mind you internet calculations may not be as reliable as first-hand experience so take from that what you will. I do know that the 17c on my friend's SR20 takes until about 4300rpm to hit full boost (at ~1.0bar) and 20G's don't spool on a drag CA until well after that.

if it helps I ran a 16g on my 1g talon tsi (4g63 2.0 engine)@ 18 psi it made 263awhp.Without putting too much into calculating, I'd say this is a crank horsepower of 310-330 range. Full boost around 4000 iirc.

20g is much bigger than you need. A tight S14-15 turbo would do ya.

I would have to say, I think the best bet for streetability would be a nice t28 bb unit or a "Disco potato" if you want aftermarket.

Big 16g fo sho. If you can find an 18g, that would be ideal. Big 16g for 360-370hp, 18g for 400hp, and the big 20g will do you about 440hp at 28psi or something.

Oh, and some 700cc/min fuel injectors.

big 16G, i had a Evo3 on mine, it was a really good sized turbo, at 14psi with HKS cams on stock fuel system and maf i made 258whp. one of our SR drift cars is sitting at 350hp @18psi on a dyna pack dyno with 264's and a evo3 16g

The guy making it lives in Idaho. He might be willing to make you one though. Let me know, and I'll ask himHere's another shot of it mocked up in his s12

tell him to clean up those pipes, turn up the gas flow a little, turn down the heat some, and get a gas lense. after he does those things those welds will look alot better and will be better. other then that decent manifold. I started to make a tubular manifold, but i didnt feel like spending the time on it and just went to a log manifold. works really good on the 16G

hard to find a better all around turbo than a $500 evo3 16.Has hit 400+hp with 400+ ft-lbs tq on some 2L DSMs... "small responsiveturbo" moving heavy street pigs to mid 11sec 1/4s. A potatoe can't.Spending twice as much on a 2871 ....still a long shot

Solid performing 16/18G boosted CA18s on sxoc and ns.com.

http://www.200sx.supanet.com/ page3 HAD Tones' old 20g/CA18 beast.496hp and a whopping 474 ft-lbs tq at the flywheel. Nutz

Better perfoming manifolds I've observed, had smaller diameter shorterrunners, minimal bends and a direct shot to turbo flange

turbo pictured looks like a chinese 16g

The one pictured is the builders turbo. So where can you get a "real" big 16g?

So, out of curiousty, what is the difference in the big 16g you sell; dsm part# 49178-014709and the big 16g http://www.turbochargers.com sells; dsm part # 49178-01470. Yours has an extra digit at the end. Are there any differences in the turbo itself?

Thanks
