that money you save is for mods not a car... if you want serious saving to buy a car then you basically have to have no life... no cell phone, no bills of any other kind... no going out.. unless you can have others pay for you.. and all that depends on how much you want to buy the car for!?! you sit down and make a plan..

"amount of money you make" then you deduct all the expenses from that and see if you have any money left over. if you do.. how much and how can you increase that? that's what you have to do

for an example:

"IF" you make $1000 a month and say your rent or(if you have roommantes) $300Insurance $120 at the mostother bills $150any misc bills $200

that makes 1000-300-120-150-200 = $230 a month left over

now you had the misc $200 in there.. if you can cut back on going out and save an extra $50 on that.. then you can save $280...

so you sit down and write all the expenses you have and deduct it form your salary and figure it out that way... also if you don't want to cut back on the amount you spend.. you can always try to get paid more $$$$...

true that.. its subtraction and addition... not too hard to find out how much you got and where it's goin.

anyone here get a loan for their car or buy mods on a credit card? Hows that work out? I mean, if you're responsible, wouldnt you rather have the part/car NOW and be making $250 payments instead of getting it later and just saving $250 a month?

Obviously it's more risky to do the loan/cc, and you've got interest to deal with, but just seein what people have to say bout it.

hey fiz, I assume your folks paying your tuition.. Are they paying room/board and books too? You're lucky if they are. I also assume that your subway pass is not covered by tuition which means you'd have to account for that money too in your budget.I did thiat budget excercise when I was a freshman in college and it works. Another recommendation is to have wealthier friends who buy the beer...

You assume wrong, my man :( . I pay what's left from my tuition (after scholarships) with loans and cash from what I made over the summer. Its all me on this one. As for the T pass, I bought it because its money that would be spent anyways, and it prevents me from needing to bring cash around with me (that would probably get spent if I had it on hand). LOL and the wealthy friends? Yep my roomate has one. He owns some internet company or something himself-- he's actually really good with flash designing and all that.. anyways he's going to England next week for some computer meeting or some garbage, and he's throwing himself a going away party which involves all of his guests being picked up at their apartments with towncars and taken to play beer pong (beriut- I donno what you guys call it) with Dom. DOM.

...but he wont buy me a car. I asked. :pface

I had a loan for my car. 1995 nissan 240sx. Made double payments and got it paid off in 2 years. Now i took out a loan for 6000 to do sr swap. I know its not a smart idea, but it doesn't bother me owing a monthly payment, and getting the motor now. I owe a little on credit cards. It works out pretty good, i think. Not the smartest thing but what evere. I only get to be a kid once. When i move out, i will have rent, wife(possibly), kids? other misc costs.

Everyone's situation is different. With a national average new car price over $20000, most people are going to need a float car loan to buy their cars. But if you're buying a $2500 240sx, you'll find many people that won't need a loan to get one. If you're in college and money is tight, you'd be foolish borrow money to do mods to your car. You have far more important things to save up for when you graduate. Think about where you're going to come up with cash for a business wardrobe, security deposits for an apartment, downpayment for a house, relocation expenses,furnishing/ decorating your first apartment, etc. Fart mufflers, wings and body kits kinda drop in their importance when your faced with other needs...

Fiz, glad to hear you're toughing it out. Gutsy and worth it. College was mostly on me too. I had to work two jobs to swing it. Glad I did it, but I had to live on a real tight budget. My car had cost me $500 to buy (not a 240sx). Fortunately there were some fun, wealthier guys in my house who were on tap 24/7. Life was good. Good luck

I'm 18 and I have a credit card that I do mods with. I just put it on the credit card, I set the limit at $1000 so I can't get in much trouble and then I just pay it off. It works good because I can't get in too much trouble and I get what I want now. Plus interest isn't that bad, just get a card that doesn't have interest until like the next year. That's what I do, mine doesn't accrue interest until april and I have had it for like 4 months. You could try this.

if you want to go the credit card way then go with a credit car that is offering 0% intrest for a eyar.. which are a whole bunch of them at the moment. I get those offeres everyday

can't go wrong with that... you can take a whole year to pay it off and not pay any interest on it at all....

you may want to think about that but just don't get carried away!

you wouldn't want to charge up an ungodly amount that you will never be able to pay off!

A 21% credit card also has no finance charges if you don't carry a balance. The 12 month 0% credit cards are okay so long as you pay off your balance before the interest starts. But watch out after the interest kicks in.... You also have to make sure there's no annual fee. Read the fine print.
