I read articles and buy lots of games and I'm tired of wasting money on somthing that svcks. I figured we could put together a list of really good RPGs from say the Original Best in my opinion, Diablo, to the present leader.

Include whether the game is online only and free/pay to play.

if you want something thats fun to play, has a kick *** story and will just eat an amazing amount of time...get final fantasy XII.

No online play, but the game looks really sweet, has an amazing combat system and so much stuff to do.

For example, i beat that game around hour 27...im trying to go back and finish the side quests and im now on hour 138...i think that i got my $50 worth...

Diablo II is my winner. I love the first Diablo as well, but Diablo II just improved on the formula (I actually just recently played through Diablo all the way again, recently. MAN those later levels are hard).

The Fallout series are also excellent games, though I would have liked them better had they been real-time.

I've never been a fan of any of the Baldur's Gate games. I know a lot of people who loved them, but I couldn't stand them--mainly because I just didn't dig the party control system.

Neverwinter Nights was good. You can buy the Diamond pack for it which comes with all 3 (I think it's 3) expansions. Or you could get the newer sequel.

Another good one that not may people think of is System Shock 2, probably because it's a first person game. It's just as stats-based as any isometric or 3rd person RPG, and there's plenty of character development and customization. But the first person view adds a lot. It is still to this day one of the most frightening games out there. It's not in-your-face scary like DOOM3, but the atmosphere in the game is so well done and so heavy, you find yourself getting creeped out even if you're playing it in a bright room with other people around.

Fallout 1 & 2 are my all-time favorites. I think that the turn-based gameplay is one of the things that made them unique though, I really liked it, but the most amazing aspects of the games were the story, atmosphere, dialogs, all the hidden secrets and humor, and all the random references that you'd have to catch.

Fallout 3 is under development now! Hopefully it won't disappoint.

I miss humorous adventure games though, such as Monkey Island, Teen Agent, Polda, Hot Summer, and such. It seems like they have pretty much died off.

Funny you mention just playing D1, I just got to Act III in D2 again. Dunno why, I just reinstalled it last week and started playing again. The month before that I replayed D1 just because...those later levels are no easier now then they were in 98...lol.

Am I the only one with brand new games sitting on the desk not installed, or installed and not played? I have Dungeon Lords, Dungeon Siege II and Lineage II just hanging around. Lineage is online only and not free, possibly why it remains in the box.

Huh, never heard of Oblivion. I'll see if I can DL it tonight. I just played Dungeon Lords and Dungeon Siege. Neither can be called "GREAT". The fighting in D-Lords is awkward at best. D-Siege is decent, I'd recommend it. Took forevevr to install, 4 disks with lots of video and no options.

Oblivion is okay. I still think it needs some serious work in the combat department. Controls for combat are pretty clunky.

First off, I just saw this forum today. ****ing awesome.

As far as the topic goes, it all depends on the style of play. As far as story-driven RPGs go, I don't think you can go wrong with the Final Fantasy series. It was originally my favorite RPG series as a kid (starting out with FF3/6) and FF7 only solidified my love for it. FF8 I didn't like as much. 9 I never played, and contrary to most people as it seems, I didn't like 10 although it was a well done game. The latest installment, FF12, is just as good as FF3/6 and FF7. The story is very in-depth, and is as dark and mature as 3/6 and 7. Pair that with better graphics, new spells and equipment, voice acting, and no random battles, you have a winner.

For the Action RPG genre, I still love Diablo II. I have been waiting for YEARS for a game even as good as it to come out, and it just has not happened. I have not given up, because I'm sure one day it will happen, but I don't think it will be for a while. I did, however, LOVE Oblivion. That game ranks high on my list of all-time favorite RPGs. Fun gameplay, good story, beautiful graphics, plenty of add-ons, free to play...what else could you possibly want?

As for MMORPGs, I'm sure EVERYONE would say WoW, but I'm going to throw a curveball and say EVE online is better, even though I had only played during the two week trial period. My problem with MMORPGs is that they are so monotonous. Once you get to a medium-high level, it's all grinding or fighting for the best items and weapons. If they made an MMORPG that followed a story through the levels, instead of random hack-and-slash and retrieve missions, (because people in real life really WILL pay you $300 in gold to fetch a paper half a mile away ) I would sign up immediately. That is one thing I hate about MMOs, there is no story. What is a RPG without a story?

I know there are other kinds of RPGs out there, I just can't think of them in my inebriated state. Feel free to post up some other RPG genres and I'll reply. Ever since I was a kid my favorite kind of games were RPGs, so I've played a few.

Honestly, I don't think wow ranks as one of the best RPGs. I enjoy it, but if it was a single-player game I wouldn't even give it a second thought. Dungeon crawling with friends is fun--it's part of the reason I love the Diablo games so much.I do like the gameplay mechanics of WoW (it's possible to get really involved in character development, gameplay math, etc. if you really want to). But I'd prefer a game with more story, as you mention, and also with...more to it. I think in the expansive, evolving worlds of MMORPGs, there should be more to the game than combat. Supposedly there's a housing district off Stormwind that's waiting to be opened. Why it hasn't been I don't understand...that would add a whole new level to the game...make it a fun place to just hang out. As it is, if you're not fighting, there's not much to do in wow...I have a friend with a 70 druid who has been nagging me to get to 70 so we can do endgame stuff together (which I'm looking forward to...arena, etc.)...but mainly I'm just getting burnt out with the game...same grinding over and over and over...getting left in the dust by people who play more than a few hours a week (at the very most).

Yes, I almost forgot about Xenogears. I bought it when it first came out as a kid, and didn't really like it, which was most likely due to the fact that I had been playing a lot of FFVII and was comparing it to that game. I borrowed it later from my friend about 4 or 5 years ago, and loved it.

I should have elaborated more on WoW. I also like the variety of items and equipment, and the sheer amount of skills and moves to use. However, the grinding, stand-still time-based combat, and time that is required to be useful in the game just gets me heated. I got tired of being ganked by people 10 levels higher than me, or people who had much better equipment because they had a better guild/more time to play/did more grinding. Basically, I think the idea of the game was excellent, just poorly executed.

Sadly, STALKER is crap.

But yes, it does have a strong RPG element to it: story driven, "quests," inventory system, nonlinear storyline. However, it does not feel like Fallout in any way, shape, or form. It has none of Fallout's charm or subtle humor. It also has none of Fallout's fun-to-play factor.

I bought STALKER because I kept reading great reviews and hearing good things from friends about it. I am EXTREMELY disappointed. The game does not look good at all, and still manages to bog my machine down terribly. I can run Prey, FEAR, etc. all with pretty high settings. Can't run this on anything close to high (well, actually, I can, but the framerate is unplayably slow). But even with all the look-pretty options on, it doesn't even look good, let alone great.

Gameplay is pretty lacking. The game has been in development for something like 8 years and has become something of a "Duke Nukem Whenever" in it's own right.A good portion of the best features that this game was originally going to have were axed for production. There are no drivable vehicles anymore, for instance. That means that you spend your time WALKING everywhere, which gets really really really boring.

I'm not a fan of the "quest" style system the game uses. The dialogue text is very bad, on par with some internet engrish.

Not only that, but it's buggy as hell. You'd think after 8 years they could wait a few more months to release a finished game...There are countless reports of people who can't run the game for more than a few minutes at a time at the most. I haven't suffered those crashes, but a few minutes is more than enough of STALKER for me.

This review pretty much sums up my feelings on STALKER:http://www.garry.tv/?p=238
