Fallout 1 & 2 are my all-time favorites. I think that the turn-based gameplay is one of the things that made them unique though, I really liked it, but the most amazing aspects of the games were the story, atmosphere, dialogs, all the hidden secrets and humor, and all the random references that you'd have to catch.MinisterofDOOM wrote:The Fallout series are also excellent games, though I would have liked them better had they been real-time.
Funny you mention just playing D1, I just got to Act III in D2 again. Dunno why, I just reinstalled it last week and started playing again. The month before that I replayed D1 just because...those later levels are no easier now then they were in 98...lol.MinisterofDOOM wrote:Diablo II is my winner. I love the first Diablo as well, but Diablo II just improved on the formula (I actually just recently played through Diablo all the way again, recently. MAN those later levels are hard)..

you fail at first person hack and slash combat... fail!MinisterofDOOM wrote:Oblivion is okay. I still think it needs some serious work in the combat department. Controls for combat are pretty clunky.

Honestly, I don't think wow ranks as one of the best RPGs. I enjoy it, but if it was a single-player game I wouldn't even give it a second thought. Dungeon crawling with friends is fun--it's part of the reason I love the Diablo games so much.I do like the gameplay mechanics of WoW (it's possible to get really involved in character development, gameplay math, etc. if you really want to). But I'd prefer a game with more story, as you mention, and also with...more to it. I think in the expansive, evolving worlds of MMORPGs, there should be more to the game than combat. Supposedly there's a housing district off Stormwind that's waiting to be opened. Why it hasn't been I don't understand...that would add a whole new level to the game...make it a fun place to just hang out. As it is, if you're not fighting, there's not much to do in wow...I have a friend with a 70 druid who has been nagging me to get to 70 so we can do endgame stuff together (which I'm looking forward to...arena, etc.)...but mainly I'm just getting burnt out with the game...same grinding over and over and over...getting left in the dust by people who play more than a few hours a week (at the very most).xekushnr wrote:FAs for MMORPGs, I'm sure EVERYONE would say WoW, but I'm going to throw a curveball and say EVE online is better, even though I had only played during the two week trial period. My problem with MMORPGs is that they are so monotonous. Once you get to a medium-high level, it's all grinding or fighting for the best items and weapons. If they made an MMORPG that followed a story through the levels, instead of random hack-and-slash and retrieve missions, (because people in real life really WILL pay you $300 in gold to fetch a paper half a mile away ) I would sign up immediately. That is one thing I hate about MMOs, there is no story. What is a RPG without a story?
Yes, I almost forgot about Xenogears. I bought it when it first came out as a kid, and didn't really like it, which was most likely due to the fact that I had been playing a lot of FFVII and was comparing it to that game. I borrowed it later from my friend about 4 or 5 years ago, and loved it.blackieblack wrote:not a mmorpg fan. I should have elaborated more on WoW. I also like the variety of items and equipment, and the sheer amount of skills and moves to use. However, the grinding, stand-still time-based combat, and time that is required to be useful in the game just gets me heated. I got tired of being ganked by people 10 levels higher than me, or people who had much better equipment because they had a better guild/more time to play/did more grinding. Basically, I think the idea of the game was excellent, just poorly executed.MinisterofDOOM wrote:I do like the gameplay mechanics of WoW (it's possible to get really involved in character development, gameplay math, etc. if you really want to).
