A caveat: I like playing "Western style" RPGs and tend not to enjoy the games imported from Japan like the FF series, Dragonquest, etc. Dunno why, just not my cup o' tea.

My personal favorites have been the recent crop of Bioware's RPGs. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (1 and 2) rock as does Jade Empire.

Planescape: Torment is an old PC RPG done by Bioware/Black Isle Studios. It's pretty old and uses a game engine similar to Baldur's Gate (maybe the exact same engine). It's a bit linear, but it makes up for it in story and really cool atmosphere.

i love rpgs...theyre pretty much all that i play, but i cant stand that everyone rants and raves over freakin mario rpg...

It is NOT the best game ever, not even close...

It had the characters for mario in it, and had some fun elements, but was by no means groundbreaking

In fact the only thing that stands out as any kind of breakthrough gameplay element were the timed button presses for mario's jump and hammer attacks.

...mediocre characters (stupid puppet, and fat cloud thing)...slow leveling up...a final boss that isnt reveled until the last hour or two of the game (some stupid war chief from an alternate dimension....LAME)

tell me what makes this game great...

Tell you what makes a game great? Dude you just said EVERYTHING that makes the game great.

Wow dude calm down.I havn't played Mario RPG sense it first came out and I've never heard anyone ever say it was the greatest RPG. I was just saying that because its the only RPG besides WoW that I've played for any period of time.

three things make mario rpg great. 1: it had mario and mario characters which made it great, 2: its gameplay was one of (now squarenix) squaresofts best turnbased battle systems. and who doesnt want to play a game that combines mario and an rpg. i wish they had amde an rpg out of street fighter. and dbz. also the stort wasnt supposed to be FF quality. it was a good story considering that it was mario. i wouldnt say tis better than certain rpg's. but its cetainly memorable. and mario kung fu was awsome.

The Final Fantasy series WAS a great RPG. Final Fantasy fell off after FFVII? You want a good RPG??? If you don't have PSOne anymore, go buy one and find this game!!!

I would argue that with all the eat, work-out, shooting training, and all the other BS make GTA San Andreas the crappiest RPG ever.

Final fantasy 7

/thread

hahahaha. I love this game wth every part of my body and I have beat it probably 5 times start to finish. It never gets old for me. I personally like the xenosaga games also, but they are more of an acquired taste.

The optional bosses in final fantasy 12 can be painfully long and challenging. When dudes have 50 million life, you know you are in for the long haul.

The Final Fantasy Series is where it's at. Chrono Cross is also a brilliant game... probably my favorite (besides Zelda: Ocarina of Time) There has been a serious lack of good RPGs lately I think... besides FFXII

My favorite RPGs

For PC : KOTOR 1, The entire Quest for Glory series.(Google this one you should find it for download) QFG is a 5 game series that lets you import your character from each of the previous games. Absolutely awesome considering it's almost 20 years old.

SNES : Chrono Trigger, love this.

and that's pretty much the GREAT ones, that i've played.

I actually never played any of the Final Fantasy's, but im sure its one of the best rpg's ever

Some of my favorites though are kingdom hearts of course, God of War, and definantly Castlevania: Symphony of the Night for PS1. This new one just came out called Rogue Galaxy, its pretty good, only thing pisses me off to helll is that some enemy's can kill u in like 3 hits whenever u travel to another world and the bosses are some biotches

Final fantasy 12 has to be my second favourite after 7. There is just so much sidequest stuff to do. I logged over 100 hours on it, and I still haven't gotten all the stuff. I am not one of those people that does absolutely everything in games, I just like getting the major stuff. The combat system was awesome once you got used to it. Setting up gambits, and modifying them on the fly was fun and challenging sometimes. I find it much more enjoyable when you crank the battle speed up to the max. That way it actually seems like the gambits are worth it, because everything is happening so fast, that you wouldn't be able to do it all manually. The storyline bosses aren't too tough, so you won't get stuck for long and get frustrated. The optional bosses are insanely hard, so there is still that challenge there. I like how all the areas are connected, so you can pretty much walk through every area. So yeah, all in all a very cool game.

When it comes to PS1 RPG's, Xenogears is freaking awesome.I must have spent about 90 hours the first run through, it was that great.
