agreed, while rotaries are really cool, they're not too efficient, the gas mileage sucks and they don't run clean at all on regular gas

I still want an FC though...

I would take an FC/FD in a heartbeat, don't get me wrong, Im just saying the quad rotary would suck on the street.

Toyota 22RE. Absolutely completely insanely reliable. I've got 345K on an absolutely completely original engine that still burns no oil and has damned near factory compression.

gotta agree there, it's also on the level of the small block chevy in the cheap rebuild section

the turbo version could apparently take 19 psi of boost regularly and survive on factory parts too!

Porsche makes the sports cars, Audi makes the sports sedans. Extremely Fast for a mass-production car

Toyotas maybe they don't suck, but they aren't exciting at all.

A turbocharger is NOT a supercharger.

porshe - yum, audi - yum

Also the toyota 2jz-gte is one of the best engines ever, how many other engines can push so much horsepower on stock internals?

a supercharger compresses air and fuel, force feeding it into the intake manifold. they are driven off the crank pulley. but a turbo, like i said turbine driven is just a compressor hooked up to a turbine. its s supercharger run of exhuast. same thing, different means of getting boost.

btw, i didnt know the corvair was turbo'd. i know the old duesenbergs used superchargers but i donnt know what the first turbo car was.

I think the best I've had experience with is the 4.3 V6 TBI that is in my 92 Chevy S10. It's a 262, which is really just a 350 missing two cylinders. :DAfter 224K miles it doesn't leak or burn a drop of oil. Pulls like hell and I beat the snot out of it for over 10 years. Nothing but the standard things have been replaced. The drivetrain is unbelievable as well. All those miles with original clutch and not a single transmission oil change.Chevy will never make another one like that again.

one of the best engines ever is the nissan/datsun L series motors. in 4 or 6 cylinder trim. I beleive its the most winningest engine line in SCCA history. the bottom ends are bulletproof. guys are turning 11.4's in thier full interiored, 3200lbs 280zx turbos with bigger turbos and more fuel. thats insane, especially for a 90,000 mile junkyard block out of a 20+yr old car.

the hemi is a BADASS motor. why do you think they use them and them exclusively in top fuel? 500cu in, somewhere on the order of 6000 to 7000 hp? they dont know, all they can do is guess since there is no dyno to measure it!

I think the nissan GRX KAI3 is a badass motor. It was used in the 1968 japan GP car. the R383. 6 liter, V12 48 valve 660 hp and they were gonna turbo it and put it in CAN AM but, next year CAN AM was cancelled. oh well.

they both compress air, but just have different ways of going about it.

perhaps we should call turbos exhuast turbine driven compressors and superchargers belt driven compressors

Very broad question, but

Reliability - Cummins 350 turbo diesel (have seen some run for a 1,000,000 miles)

Stock Potiential - Toyota 2JZ-GTE (only reason I chose the 2JX over an RB series, is displacement at 3L vs 2.6L on an RB. Yes I know about the RB30, but thats not too widely available here in the states, and can you say 1000hp on stock bottom end 2JZ?)

Best NA - New Chevy 572 Big Block! Enough torque to twist the front end of your car clean off!

Most exotic - Bugatti Veyron W16, whats better than 16 cylinders in a footprint slightly larger than a V8, with 4 turbochargers churning out 1000HP and 980lb-ft of torque at 2200RPM!

There ar many more that I love, but I thought I would keep it simple and list my favorites.

new corvette is preaty impressive.. same gas mileage as the 240sx but 350hp/360lbs torque..

dont remember what my domestic friends were saying, but they really liked the northstar engine

my favorite engines have to be Porsche's aircooled H6s (pre 1999 911s)

It is a supercharger but it's name has always been turbocharger since 1909.

ZL-1 427......:drooling

I know I'm gonna get flamed for this but.......

I would have to say the small block chevy. It's got to be one the most reliable engines ever built. And it's cheap to repair and build. Those damn overdrive autos behind them suck though.....:D

I just put #4 in my 88' full size.
