Installed BC Coilovers on my M37X and I have a clunking noise coming from the front end. Any ideas other then preload and center top nut. All that has been checked and is good to go. Anyone else had this issue? Let me know.

**Moderator Note**

I've asked for some feedback from the M35/45 guys since many of them use BC coilovers and can hopefully offer up more information from personal experience so we can all benefit and be better informed.

Unfortunately, a lot of people have an issue with BC coilovers making noise. check on MyG37.com and maybe you'll find a resolution. Sadly, for AWD owners, this is the only coilover option. :frown:

The only other thing you can do is make sure all of your bolts are snug and that your suspension is not bottoming out or knocking on something (like brake lines).

Yeah my AWD G37x sedan did it, my last m56 did it, and my current m56 does it but it makes the noise a lot less than the other 2 cars. Did you install the stock little paper-like gasket between the top of the coilover. That makes a difference as well.

Check the top nut holding the spring down. It appears to come loose. Others have accepted it as normal.

Yeah it has the gasket installed and everything g is nice and tight. It only does it at slow speeds. When cruisin down the interstate or at normal speed it doesn't make the sound.

Yep. sounds about right. anytime the weight of the car shifts, especially side to side

That's exactly what it's doing.

Does this issue plague all coil-over setups on these cars or just the BC's?

I've heard it mostly from BCs or other varients like the D2's

If you do a google search on BC coilover noise, you'll see that it spans across several different makes/models.

I wish we had a different coilover option. I had Tanabe coilovers on my G and they were extremely comfortable during normal driving but stiffened up nicely around turns. The progressive spring and helper spring setup was perfect for a DD.

Coilovers across all brands will make noises...which is why I avoided them like a plaque. It's a shame that the good old fashion lowering springs and performance dampers option have become far few and between these days. :tisk: Click on the link before for basic information as why why coilovers make noise. Installing an air suspension is another albeit costly alternative to coilovers.

This cannot be further from the truth. I had Tanabe coilovers for over 3 years and they did not make a sound once. BC coilovers are notorious for this. A simple google search will find that for you. High quality coilovers like Tanabe, KW, Fortune Auto...these are all top notch brands that will provide excellent ride, adjustments, and results. It is unfortunate for M owners that we do not have any aftermarket support and only BC coilovers are available to us.

Springs and dampers are not matched to each other and often times ride much worse than a mated coilover setup. My e34 is lowered on Vogtland springs and Koni Yellow dampers (arguably one of the best performance shock/strut manufacturer) and they still don't ride as comfortable as my Tanabe coilovers did nor did they perform as well.

It's also VERY funny that you linked a Megan racing article on why coilovers make noise...BC MAKES Megan coilovers!

My HKS coilovers didn't make any odd noises on my FD.

I'll ask the M35/45 guys about this since there are quite a few more guys using the BC coilovers.

Mine too. My only concern is I have the sport awd. Not sure I've seen anyone on here who has tried lowering springs on that. I'm probably over thinking it

I have had my BC coils installed for almost 11 months now. And while I have heard an "occasional" clunk, for the most part, these coil overs are not that bad. I initially, and sometimes still do, think it's the dust shield for the rotors that's making the noise that I hear.
They get the job done when installed properly, so for you guys on the fence, you will have to decide to either hold out until another brand comes forward, or go with these. The Tanabe's are not a bad buy, but they don't offer the adjustable dampening. And then the Spring that are available, well, IMO, they don't lower the car enough.

So, do some thinking, because there arent' too may options available. GL.

Fortune Auto is located out of Powhatan, VA. I just sent them an email about possibly getting some R&D done for a M37X if there was someone to be the guinea pig. Would anyone be interested if they were to do it for us?

They told me they weren't going to do anything with the AWD variant :(

I would lump D2 and Ksport with Megan. BC is an upgraded version of Megan.

Yeah...I might give BC coils a shot but I have a feeling I'll be putting up with some "normal by their standards" clunks.

This is what i wanted to do also, but the end product doesn't look as good to "me". They just don't sit low enough; so that's how i ended up getting the BC's.

listen up.ive solved this problem days after my bc install.on the preload of the front shocks.dont use the tool to gap the preload setting.use a dime or a nickel.then adjust height as desired.this made my clunking noise go away.i also have my front damper set at 18 clicks hard.start from total soft and click 18 times towards hard.my ride is slammed an rides beautiful.no noise what so ever. On a heavy car you never trust the preload recommended, which is the gap of the tool used to adjust height an preload.good luck.you don't have to take entire shock off to do this.jack it up.take wheel off.and use jack stand on chassis for safety.eibachs suck and show barely any change in less you have an x model.p.s. after a quick spin and you hit some bumps.retighten the bottom nuts all around on the bc's and after 500 miles

Nice to know. What's the adjustment range? You said 18, I'm wondering what the max is. My old HKS coilovers had 32. How thick is the tool vs a dime or nickle?

the tool is so thin, like a pencil or pen.id use a dime.with the tool that preload its to soft.it bangs the control arm onto the chassis no matter how hard you set the damper.i tighten the preload buy hard intill I cant turn it no more.then I use the tool to tighten the proload ring intill I can fit a dime in between the preload ring and lower ring.this is how my car sits nowImage

Looks good man. Need some pics and sound clips of that Stillen exhaust. I think that's my next purchase.
