Hey guys. I've been reading around about the battery acid build up and it seems I should replace the battery. There is an aftermarket one that isn't the correct size in there. The jackass who owned it previously was obviously an idiot.

So I was reading this

corrosion-on-the-negative-battery-terminal-t516942.html

Someone said this
Even if you get brand new cables/terminals the problem will come back over and over because.........it is the fault of the battery in your car- what happens is the battery acid vents{as a gas} and seeps around the battery post where it exits the battery {due to a failed seal around the battery post} and builds up corrosion where the 2 metals meet { the battery post and the cable terminal}.

This happened to every single genuine Infiniti battery I ever had in the Q {4 of them if I recall correctly} I installed a AGM Odyssey battery 30 months ago and have never needed to clean the connection, it remains perfect - the AGM type batteries are not acid flooded like conventional batteries and this I believe made all the difference
So I guess I should replace the damn thing! lol. What brand is reliable? or should I get an OEM battery?

The reason I ask is, every 2 few months, my battery would die out of the blue. I pop open the hood and see the acid build up on the negative wire. I wiggle the cable a bit, wait a few minutes and pray for it to turn on!

So yeah, what battery should I get my NICO friends?

If you overtighten the battery terminals, it can crack the battery case around the posts and cause corrosion that is impossible to stop. Just tighten them until you can't lift them off with hand force. Also ensure the hold-down bracket is not overtightened.

Clean all corrosion with a baking soda and water mixture. You can apply any sort of grease after you connect the terminals is made to help prevent corrosion. Those red and green colored anti-corrosion donuts also help.

If there is still corrosion after these steps, only a new battery will solve the problem.

You are the man! However, all those steps have been done by my brother (mechanic). I just got fed up with the battery and want to replace it. I called my buddy who is also a mechanic and he said Interstate and Optima are very good. He said Optima batteries are $200+ and I saw interstate for my QX for $125.

What do you guys recommend?

I've read anecdotes that Optima's quality has declined since they changed manufacturers or ownership (don't recall which) a few years ago.

I've had an Interstate battery for about two years and it has been fine.

You can currently purchase an Advance Auto Parts Gold battery for something like $65 after discount code. Order online using code RETMENOT124 and pick-up in store. I don't recall who is the manufacturer for these batteries.

I'd prefer a good brand and not use Advance's parts. We have a Carquest a block away from my brother's shop. I have an ACDelco battery in my QX.

Would you recommend the Interstate? Any issues ever? Acid build up?

Never had any corrosion build up even before I applied the anti-corrosion donuts and some of the bundled red anti-corrosion spray. Always cranks well, even in our harsh Florida winters ;)

Johnson Controls manufactures the Autocraft batteries for AAP.

Chicago weather is terrible, so I would hope the Interstate is good! lol.

AAP parts are POS. We prefer Carquest. I never had an AAP battery, but we stay away from them all together.

I never use house brand parts either. AAP's online discount codes are great though, so I often buy stuff like gear oil and brand-name parts via that method if it's cheaper than RockAuto or I need things the same day.

Optimas are junk and overpriced for the performance you get. Id look towards something else.

I don't know if this will help, as I'm in Canada and you may not have the same products, but when I needed a new battery a few years ago, I went to Costco and picked up a Kirkland (house brand) battery for $80.00.
It has worked perfectly so far, and has not shown any tendencies for corrosion around the terminals.
Considering our harsh winters (and I do mean harsh, Mr. Moderator.... :chuckle: :chuckle: ;) ;) ), it has performed flawlessly. Cheers.

Thanks for all your info guys! I've been busy and forgot to reply back. My brother said Interstate is a POS and told me to get an Optima. I bought an Optima from AAP for 150 before taxes and with a 25% discount code. New thing (well, old actually), my running boards are rusted, which I heard is a common problem and I want it fixed (if possible). I don't want no aftermarket ones and I prefer the factory one. How would I go about fixing it? I'll post pix when my brother puts in on his lift.

Did you apply any grease or the anti-corrosion donuts?

Sorry, I don't know much about rust repair since there isn't much appreciable rust in Florida. It might be better to source new boards from a junkyard or someone parting out their QX4 and apply anti-rust measures from now on.

My brother cleaned the wires and some other stuff. I had a phone call so I wasn't paying attention 100%

Lucky you. Chicago is terrible. Out of curiosity, an 01 Pathfinder running boards should be fine as well, right? I'll look around and see what there is

This is the battery I bought

The reviews seemed good and it was a perfect fit in my QX4.
