It could probably be better, but ignorance is bliss. At this point, I'd like a HD-DVD player simply so I can start to build a collection. While I don't plan to upgrade much of my existing library, I don't want to waste money adding more DVD's where I could be adding HD movies. Not to mention, the Toshiba HD-DVD players have been receiving great reviews about their upconverting abilities.
This is how I make a comparison.

Try watching your favorite action movie using the tv speakers on your huge tv.

Then try watching the same exact movie with a huge stereo and a "small" 21" crt,

Which do you think will give the better experience?

Apples and Oranges man. I don't use the TV speakers at all. It sounds quite full in the 13' by 14' room my current system is in. I don't have a 21" CRT. In my case, the next logical step is to make use of the HDTV I bought.

I actually have the Logitech Universal XBOX 360 remote. All the other remotes stay in that cabinet.

Just fyi... it will be years and years from now before any TV will look half as good as a decent CRT.My monitor 10 years ago could do 1080p with it's eyes closed.

Not sure of the point you are trying to make but, find me a 42"+ CRT that can do more than 1080p...

Yes, CRT technology is probably the best in terms of PQ, but there are size limitations. Sure, you could go with a rear projection CRT and quite honestly, my parent's CRT RP HDTV looks much better than my DLP, but They also have more room to fit it in their living room. Space is the primary reason many people upgrade to non-CRT TV's. CRT RP TV's require quite a large cabinet for the Projector itself to reside. DLP RP and LCD RP does not require space below the screen itself, which in my case allowed me to stuff all of my components into a cabinet underneath the TV. Flat panel displays allow even more flexibility. I've installed 3 wall mounted plasmas so far and in 2 cases, they were over a fireplace which made it much easier to lay out the rest of the furniture as fireplaces can limit furniture arrangement.

And actually SED TV technology is around the corner. While we will have to wait to see what happens with the Licensing lawsuit that's pending, the technology is there to produce a flat panel TV with 10 times the contrast level of a plasma. And from what I've read, the technology has potential to be relatively cheap as part of the screen can actually be manufactured by printing onto the screen with inkjet technology. The power consumptiuon supposedly will be less than current technology as well.

If this post is jumping ahead too much, my apologies. But comparing Computer CRT's to the Large screen TV's require a much broader view than PQ and maximum resolution.

Haven't you ever noticed a difference in sound when you go to the movies?

You can have that in your house for about the same cost as the HD/bluray player.

My point was more that 'TVs' suck in general, HD or not, since 'HDTV' standards are pathetic.

If I want good picture quality, I watch something on 35mm Super-F, or if it's CGI, I watch my computer render it.

Expecting any TV to look really good it silly.

I'm not disputing those facts. But you have to understand that everyone has different priorities and limited budgets. You're trying to change my priorities. While sound quality is important, I'd prefer the better PQ now. As I said before, I'd like to make much better use of the HD PQ that is available through my TV.

No doubt. But it's nice to be able to watch a movie on a large screen. Trying to watch a rendered movie over DVD type players and with current connections in super high resolutions would be limited by media storage and bandwidth. Real-time rendering is easier on the data storage and bandwidth, but would require us to all have what is essentially a computer to render the data. Current film standards for live action movies would also be limited by the film they are using.

But, if you insist, you can wait 30 years and we might have this available:

I understand what you're saying.

I just don't like when people spend a good amount of money on the picture side of the experience, but balk at spending anywhere near that for the audio portion of the experience.

Like I said, believe it or not, the audio portion is about 60% of the overall experience.

I can understand that you want to maximize your current investment(tv). I'm simply asking that you consider getting your audio system to atleast the level of the tv.

Here's what I see is going to happen: YOu're going to get an HD-dvd player. Your tv is going to look absolutely kickass. But your audio will sound like total poopy. I don't know if you've looked into this, but HD players arn't just for giving you better picture quality. They have brought about a few new HD audio formats.

Just to put your system into perspective: It's like having a ferrari(flash(tv)) with donuts(audio) on it.

I agree with you. I follow enough of the HD stuff to know that even HD-DVD and Blu-Ray formats are capable of using some of the better codecs and even uncompressed audio formats. The current audio system was chosen as a compromise years ago when I needed a better DVD player than I had and a surround sound system. I opted not to do a All-in-one unit as none of it would be individually upgradable. My plan is that as receivers with HDMI upconverting become more available and less expensive (Particularly of the 4 HDMI input or more variety), then I will consider that. Perhaps when I need more than the 2 HDMI inputs my TV has. Speakers would likely be done at or near the same time. But seeing as I'm not in any hurry to rush out and buy such equipment right now, it will wait.

And what's wrong with donuts?

Sounds like a plan.

I'll recommend one thing though, don't bother with the HDMI inputs on receivers.

I used to install for tweeter. They caused nothing but problems.

I'd recommend just looking for a receiver that has 4 or 5(both arn't common actually) component video inputs. This connection will allow you to pass 1080i. If you absolutely need to pass 1080p you can connect those devices directly to the TV

Also, sending everything through component is, 1: cheaper and 2: easier to operate because switching is only done at the receiver. Even with a universal remote like the harmony it's more reliable to do the switching only at the receiver

When you're in the market for speakers and/or a receiver let me know. I can find you a nice system to fit almost any budget. The only thing that pushes the budget up a bit is that I'll request that you spend about $400 minimum on the sub

I recently installed a HDMI upconverting Receiver (Onkyo SR674) at my GF's parent's home. It had no problems passing the signal from their HDMI cable box and their upconverting DVD player just fine. It's a relatively new model, so perhaps your experiences are with models that seem to have some quirks in this regard. I have heard of issues in the past with this though so I do believe you. Hopefully, by the time I'm ready, HDMI switching will be more reliable among all the available products.

wonder how many of those 360s will redring by the end of the year?.

i am pretty pleased with my current setup

46in aquos LC46d62uPS3Wii360

Denon avr-887 receiverpanasonic surround sound speakers (weak link as they are from my old HTIB, but sound pretty decent)athena 10in sub

of all my systems the ps3 probably gets the most use between gaming, DVD/blu-ray watching, and using it as a DLNA client. (firmware 1.8 did alot to boost the PS3's value in my eyes). with the 360 being a close second (addicted to shadowrun and RB6:vegas.

wii gets the least amount of play as it is having probably a worse software drought than the PS3 at the moment. the only thing keeping me from selling is is looking forward to metroid prime 3, and future VC releases.

I bought one for me. Then one for the GF. I need one at my parent's business so I don't ever have to carry it on my motorcycle (I already have to carry my laptop and now some schoolbooks). So I decided to find an Elite. My GF essentially bought me that one though. =)

The first one I had sine about Jan/Feb of 06. The second I got maybe in March or April 06. No Red rings on any. The Elite being new, who knows. The second 360 had rare but intermittent disc read errors so we submitted that to MS for warranty and received another to replace it. It was rare enough to hang onto, but MS extended the warranty to a year so I took advantage. No problems since.

37" HDTV, Laptop w/Vista, $1500 Computer. What can I say? 360 was to the left, but had to go to the shop today to get a new one because of an hard-drive error.
