How the hell do you take off the crank pulley? What tool and where to get?

The crank pulley is held in by a 30mm bolt. However, trying to fit the socket in there with an air gun or impact wrench is not going to work because of there being no space. Unless you have taken out the A/C condenser and you can easily take out the radiator, your only option is to do the following.

Put the 30mm socket onto the crank pulley bolt. Place a large socket wrench onto the socket and extend the socket wrench handle with a breaker bar so that the end of the bar rests on the driver's side GROUND. Make sure that the socket wrench itself is set to loosening, not tightening. Then, while someone is holding the socket on the crank pulley to ensure it does not fall off, click the starter a few times by turning the key in the igntion. This will hold the crank pulley bolt in place, and turn the crank pulley so that the bolt loosens.

curiousity is if anyone will get hurt while i crank this bad boy over. I already took the belt off of the cam pulleys. Will this hurt the project thus far. The only reason i want to take this thing off is because i want to see where the crank gear is set soo i can make sure it's aligned with the oil pump mark.

Ok this is where i'm at soo far on this issue.

Intake cam pulley - lined up with the back plate timing cover markExhaust cam pulley - lined up with the back plate timing cover mark

Crank Grear - I rotated the crank pulley untill i saw #1 piston at TDC.service manual says to rotate it twice after you set the intake and exhaust cam at the marks so i did it but i want to see where the hell the crank gear is to see if it's line up with the oil pump mark.

Thank for the replys fellas.

AHHHHHHHH!!!! NOOOOOOO!!!

Okay bro did you take off the belt then rotate the crank pulley!? If you did your head is coming off... Did you crank it with the belt off!? if you did your head is coming off...please tell me you didn't. Put the belt back on then crank.

Ay-yie-yie.... Please let us know.-Alex

ok took off timing belt then rotated cams untill they hit thier marks then rotated crank pulley by hand to get #1 piston at TDC. Can't put back on timing belt. not enough room. if i messed it up i'll just take it to a mechanic. This was just a test anyway to see if i could do this myself. I never cranked the engine with the starter just rotated manually by hand. I read the book at it seemed that there would be no prolem doing these steps. I went through all the steps except i by passed taking off the pulley.

crap i just saw it. Lol. I was supposed to move the crank pulley 360' untill the cams lined up. But when i started doing that earlier it stopped me at a certain point like in that second pic i posted. The 2 dots on the pulleys almost lined up it was just a tooth off. So i decided that i'd do it according to the book but i mistakenly took the understanding that the pulleys need to rotate 360' with belt off. How bad did i just screw this up. LOL!!! Ahhh man i'm a genuis.

Well, what I meant was to do that pulley removal with the timing belt still on lol. If you already took it off, then obviously you cannot do it my way lol. Sorry for the confusion.....

If the valves were closed he may not have hit them with the pistons...and he probably wouldn't have damaged them by rotating the crank by hand, there would be some pretty good resistance if you had to bend a valve that way.

Mario.... Get the marks back on and put the belt back on. Once they are all lined up tighten the tensioner. Never rotate engine components with the belt off. Hopefully the valves were closed. You can't really hurt the valves rotating by hand, although it is really easy to tweak them and the valves will never seat right.

that stopping point with the belt on was the motor on its compression stroke. You have to turn it really hardwith the socket to get it past that point. But remember never rotate with belt off.

i can't get the belt to get back on. I already loosened the tensioner nut but the crank pulley is still on and i can't take it off the tensioner to get the belt back on.

Are there any access points on the bottom of the bell housing that you could fit a screwdriver into? If so, Take a large screwdriver and insert it into the teeth on the flywheel. Hold that in place while someone else loosens the bolt on the front of the crank.

Your other option is to take the cams out. This will close all of the valves. At that point you could remove the bolt using the starter bump method.

You seriously think a screwdriver will hold more than 100 ft lbs of torque trying to get that nut off? You'll end up chipping teeth off the flywheel before you know it.

Mario, Its a Pain in the *** to get the tensioner back in. Get a pry bar and hold the tensioner back while you slip on the belt. Put the belt on the tensioner, then the cam on the side of the tensioner than the other one. Its gonna take a while but you CAN slip it back on. Just takes a lil force...-Alex

The answer is yes, a large screwdriver is more than enough to hold the amount of torque to take that bolt out. No it will not chip the teeth on the flywheel. They actually make tools to hold the flywheel that way. After doing this hundreds of times(and the other Techs I used to work with having done it more than that) experience tells me that you are wrong.

The tools they make aren't screwdrivers they are flywheel holders and they are more than just a mere screwdriver. They're big clamps w/ handles. Yes I have used screwdrivers to hold the flywheel, but you have to remember this guy doesn't have an impact wrench handy. Stick a screwdriver in the flywheel and take a torque bar to the bolt that won't budge and you'll snap the teeth right off. Lets be technicians and show people how to do things the CORRECT way not the backyard way. Tell an employer you like to wedge screw drivers to hold cranks and 10 to 1 says he doesn't hire you. Good work ethnic tells me you're wrong.

But unless you can find a flywheel holding tool for an rb, or any that will work, a heavy duty screwdriver works. I've used them before. Since he's turning the whole engine assembly and the flywheel has a larger diameter than the bolt on the crank pulley, the load is greatly reduced on the screwdriver and it can be easily broken loose without the special tool.

UPDATE 09/08/2005 - Solved.... Ok so we had to drill and tap bigger holes for the crank pulley to fit in bigger bolts to take it off without damaging anything. So got that done and set timing according to the manual. Next we put in the xtd na z32 clutch(ebay) and rb25det throw out bearing(phase 2 motortrend).

To begin with it started right up no sputtering or hard starts. Also, The clutch pedal is soo light i had the flywheel resurfaced and everything well greased. Clutch pedal is nice.

Took it out on my first real ride of the rb25det hybrid and gentle men i have to say. EVERY PENNY SPENT WAS VERY WELL SPENT. I've been in V8's and this magnificent power is stunning. Just on stock internals and stock boost. Amazing pull and reaction. I'm in love and her name be SILVIA. JonPowell, Ramius83, SLO240SX, goofynick, yellow_jacket. I appreciate all the help and man if you guys need any from me i'm all yours. Email me anytime at [email protected] i seem to be a damn wiring guru on these harnesses now.

it was the timing belt. It skipped a tooth on the exhaust cam and it ran like crap. Nothing more than that. sorry.
