My first car that was mine was when i was in third year university (3 yrs ago) a 91 dodge spirit, 1000$ b-day gift from my dad, realistically I did not need a car, I would of preferred something else, the cost of the car could of paid for text books for a semester.

Then about last summer (after graduation and getting a job) I bought an 07 Camry LE, the family needed a large sedan. Plus it was great on gas and insurance and really I needed a car but did not want to spend a lot of money on it. Then this winter my moms car died I sold her Camry at a deal (I didn't mind loosing money on the car cause its my mom) and bought my self the coupe also I hit the age of 25 insurance dropped so paying insurance wont mean I cant pay off my student loads. I also paid off a large portion of my student loans, so I had some money to burn.

So yeah I bought it the car on my own, and it feels good owning the A/C, that you bought and not somebody giving it to you, very satisfying.

At 16 I drove a 1986 toyota camry hatchback.

Bought this car myself from the salary of my first job. Helped me realize the value of money

Most kids in my area get spoiled with brand new cars when they turn 16. The teenage girls get thei Luis Vuitton Purses too.

/sigh

I bought my first car from my parents at 17 -- a Saturn 2000 LS2. Had to pay gas, insurance, and for the car itself (Kelly Blue Book Value). That car was damn good to me until just last year and thus is why I bought my new 3.5AC.

It sucks to sign the paperwork yourself because of the responsibility and fact that you know you have a crapload to pay each month; but it also feels damn good because it's all yours.

To all of you that did not pay for your car, just make sure that you appreciate what others did for you-- because there is nothing I despise more than some sorry kid that gets everything they want and then take it all for granted.

Trust me, you definitely take care of things a lot better when you payed for it and it's your sole signature on the paperwork.

my first car was my dads 91' 535i which imo looked ahead of its time and still looks good, i put wheels, stereo, and exhaust on it.

ten days after I turned 18 I bought the A/C, 3000 was mine, 5000 was my dads because I couldn't sell my car cuz my bro gets his license next month and my grandparents gave me my early grad. present of 2000 so I was able to put down 10,000 and my payments are like 360 for 4 years, I work at an optometrist's office and make my payments and pay for gas.

i appreciate everything that is given to me. especially by my husband who shows his appreciation of all that i do to support him while he's deployed. and the only reason i dont work right now is we never know when hes gonna be gone so he likes to spend every minute with me while he can, that way we don't regret it when he's gone. 15 dollars or so an hour doesn't make up the time lost when he leaves.

So I sittin' here reading about all you kids getting the A/C for your first car, some having parents buy it for you. Well I bought my Coupe so I could give my 17 year old my 98 Camry for his 1st car

I paid $500 for my first car in 1980 (1970 Maverick). My first new car in 1984 (fully loaded ElCamino) I paid a whopping $10,800. I bought this at the age of 22, paid for it myself......still have it too! I'll be willing to bet none of us have our coupes in 2032, 24 years from now!!

All the best to you and your husband.

The first car i ever drove was an '82 R12 renault which was my dad's. He's a teacher so basically everything he earned went to pay school for me and my 2 sisters. around 1996 he bought a '90 ford topaz which he lend me from time to time by the age of 16. i got my own car untill i was 22, which was a 2004 dodge neon.

now i'm 26 and i earn about 10 times what my dad makes. up until now i bought my first car (alti coupe) and i bought him a 2007 maxima.

10 times what your dad makes? I hope you are exagerating, because im sure a teacher makes 30k or more a year. if you are making 300k at the age of 26, you need to teach me something! lol

hello. My dad is a teacher at Mexico. He earns about 16k mxp which is like 1500 usd. i graduated from a great school down here and have worked for a consulting firm since 2005 and earn around 130k mxp which is like 12k usd, so its like 7.5 times more (exagerated the 10 time thing).

Thing to teach??? work your a$$ of during school and learn everything you can while u at it. pple will notice u know more then the rest and they will be happy to pay for that knowledge.

yeah.... buying something for your parents gives a lot more satisfaction than buying something for yourself. my dad smiled in a way i've never seen before hahaha

And you got a lot of respect from me for it! I come from an area of unappreciative spoiled brats, my parents never had enough money to get me nice stuff. My H.S grad present was nothing, literally nothing, and I think thats fair, because its not a big accomplishment to graduate from H.S, IMO. My college grad present was $500, which was decent, IMO, considering my dad paid a big chunk of my college fees. That in itself was PLENTY, because, he gave me the gift of knowledge, and I can now earn my own dollar.

I have basically paid for everything myself since I was 15, and I feel its made me respect my parents more and appreciate what they have done for me, and understand the value of money.

Most kids around my area have been given a lot more than me, and they still feel that they "deserve" a brand new car from their parents. It's unfortunate, because they will grow up to be dependent on that, and one of life's major lessons is independence and self reliance. anyway, enough of my

Bottom line, buying your own car at the age of 18, and paying it off yourself, is something i respect, so stay up!
