You need both parts the front and the back. They are different. Look at car-part.com

I have never worked on a silvia, but I would assume that you need the specific driveshaft. I wuold assume the starters are the exact same, so just try playing around a little more with that.

Great write-up... really great pics!!

Must have taken awhile to get all the pics while doing that much work too!!!

I have the 5-speed in the S13 I recently bought, and there are a few remaining gremlins that I'm chasing down:

1. No back-up lights. I suspect the two wires you pointed out in one pic, and I'm gonna go check my car.

2. No cruise control. Not a biggy, I'd like to fix it, but I seldom use cruise anyway.

3. Upshifting grinds in the lower gears unless I'm super careful when shifting, or I double-clutch it. First to second is terrible, second to third is still touchy, and after that it's almost always a smooth shift.

I want to check the clutch pull and adjustment and then bleed it if needed.

1. check out the sticky at the top that has both s13 and s14's listed. This thread pertains more to s14's in particular. Look at the s13 one for the low down on the wiring for the reverse lights.

Why didnt these guys just drop the back of the tranny down to tilt the motor to get to the top bell housing bolts? Does that not work on these cars?

it just tilts the bellhousing towards the firewall and decreases the space you have back there to get to the bolts.

I always used a few long extensions and a wobble joint. seams easier then getting an extra jack for a bolt.

I've done it that way too, this writeup was just the 1st time I did it - it worked though.

I have a 1996 automatic s14. I have a 1993 donor car. I was wondering if I could use the hardlines from the master cylinder on the 93 on my 96 s14? Which transmission crossmembers would I have to use?-Adam

Exact same situation here. I would also like to know the answer to this question.

On my 93, I found that to remove/install the 5spd transmission, it is easiest to rotate the transmission toward the starter about 20-30 degrees. It lowers the position of the starter bulge on the bellhousing mostly out of the way of the firewall and gave me a lot more wiggle room.

do you think we can use the later nissan truck Frontier manual transmission from a 2wd truck? the 98-02ish have the same engine...?

those are alot easier to find and are in better shape due to being newer..

here are some pics of it off the flee bay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...wItem

I'll be starting this in a few weeks and it looks like it's going to be a pain in the *** for a noobie like myself.

Quick question regarding the use of OBDI transmissions, is the CAS sensor mounted to the transmission itself or to one of the tranny mounts? Can I use an OBDI transmission and just source an OBDII tranny mount for the CAS? I'm looking to avoid drilling.

I wanted to say thanks for the great write ups and links to the other wiring write ups. I'm about ready to wrap up my build. I have to admit it was harder sourcing the parts than actually doing the swap...lol

lol hey man!

I helped IBTL with this swap last week/weekend a little and I see how you can easily use an OBD1 trans and just drill it for the CAS, but the placement of the CAS is critical and you wont be able to figure out where it goes, correctly, without an OBD2 trans in front of you, lame.

ONE AWESOME THING we figured out was in removing the auto-trans-adapter-ring on the end of the crank, where the manual-trans-input-shaft-bushing needs to go, we found a quick way to remove it, NO DRILLING, no dremel work, just an easy peasy way to remove that little ring / spacer thing. Vice grips on it like how a plumbers wrench grabs a pipe... then hold the crank from turning. now rotate the adapter bushing using the vice grips, spray wd40 or penetrating lube if it wont come out, but as you rotate it it should ease its way out because its only a press in fit, there is nothing holding it in there besides the press-fit. so as you rotate it inside the crank with a little pressure pulling the adapter outward, it will come right out. I got IBTL's adapter out in less than one minute using that method and it was so easy. just watch out that you dont bonk your face with the vicegrips once the adapter comes out, um yeah I thought I busted a few teeth. so wear face protection or something, ouch.

thanks for the write up its really well done, helped out a ton!

oh yeah, some of the bolts on the top of the bellhousing were easier to crack loose by kneeling on the motor so we could get a strong arm right there to do the job, easy peasy.

I dont think so but that would be awesome if you could. I bet a lot of the parts are identical (clutch release fork, tailshaft cover, etc)

I would also like to know somewhat of the same thing. Will an s13 tranny swap into my 96 S14? I'm supposed to be picking up the tranny this week so this info would definitely come in handy. Trying to get ready for this battle. . .lol.

Yes. A S13 tranny will fit onto a S14 KA. Bellhousings are the same.

is there a solution for the Crank sensor if using a S13 tranny? A write-up perhaps on how to attach it correctly?

just did the swap this weekend in my 93, i never knew how easy it could be. I was expecting the worst, but these write ups helped me to be prepared. The only problem that we ran into was that there is a dowel in the top of the trans bellhousing that goes into the engine, but the dowel stayed with the block, and it was a major PITA to figure out, but we caught on fast and after that it went smooth. to those about to attempt the swap, make sure you have at least one extra set of hands to help and have fun with it, now if only these break in miles go quickly...

With what? Nobody can tell you whats included in your motor/tranny set, that's up to the seller, ask him. As for what else you need, the complete parts list is in the first post of this thread, get everything on that list and you will have everything you need.
