I went from a 2007 Nissan Altima 2.5S to a 2010 Nissan Rogue SL about one month ago (was leasing). I looked at the Murano but as others noted, I do not need the extra size or the extra costs associated with that model. The Rogue is just the right size and up to now, my wife and I love it (I bought her a 2009 Nissan Versa SL back in April).
I agree that I see many more RAV4, Murano, etc. than Rogues, but this did not detract me from the Rogue. Why? I have been a Nissan customer for many years. Starting with a "Datsun" (memories), a Sentra, a Stanza, an Altima and now the Rogue (one Ford cycle through that period... had problems with it). During that time, I had virtually zero issues with any of my Nissan cars and support was always top notch. So my trust level is Nissan is very high.
Although my Rogue SL is loaded (minus AWD & 360), there are a few items which did not make the list:
1. The only downside I noticed are the horrible blind spots in the rear. Even though the mirrors are larger than those from cars, viewing the rear requires you to pay extra attention due to the numerous large blind spots. The 360 offers a rear view camera, but it was NOT available on the SL (pity).
2. There is no built-in GPS navigation option. Now I do have the premium BOSE sound system but the navigation option, which was available in my Altima, is not offered for the Rogue. I need to use an external GPS receiver.
Now I did consider the AWD version but as I live in San Diego, I did not feel that I needed this as there is no snow here and rain is rare (not this year though). I know that AWD is supposed to give you better control, but I decided that it was not worth the extra cash.
Value... I always kept my cars well maintained so I managed to get pretty good resale values for those I owned and no penalties on my lease returns.
So basically, it boils down to personal preference. I prefer Nissan over Toyota, Honda and others so I bought from Nissan.
