When I have the Z32 Differential installed on thursday, I also want to have the ATF replaced with synthetic. I've heard a lot of great things about Redline ATF, how many Qts will I need to have it replaced? Keep in mind, I had a flush done at the dealer probably 6,000 miles ago, so a flush really won't be in the picture quite yet.

I want to improve the shifts and i've heard the Redline ATF does a great job of that. Now onto the differential, the shop says they have synthetic differential oil onhand, what weight do I need to provide the proper friction and still be functional in the cold winters?

I did a search and really didn't come up with much information, so anything would be helpful at this point.

According to the FSM, the transmission's total capacity is 11-1/8 quarts. However, if you're only planning on replacing the 4 or 5 quarts in the pan, what's the point?

If you plan on replacing the ATF then there's a procedure for draining the pan, adding 3-5 quarts, running the car for two minutes, and repeat. I read a post about this where it takes 2 minutes to empty the pan. This may be worth your while.

I think that any synthetic diff fluid would be helpful. Mobil 1 is available everywhere, but redline and royal purple have good reputations if you can find them.

Thanks for the info guys. I think i'm going to wait on the ATF fluid for another month or two, and then i'll do a complete flush, just intime for winter.

The differential will get sythentic fluid upon installation, i'll let the shop use their gear oils since I wont be able to get redline fluid out here sooner.

Well, better late than never.

Any M1 or Royal Purple or Amsoil will do fine also. You probably don't need the extended heat range, so go for the standard viscosity range.

For diff fluid, synthetic is better because you cant really monitor it like you can ATF. Every week when you check your oil and ATF (hint hint) your supposed to smell, taste and visualize how the fluid looks. You cna tell a lot by how it looks and smells.

My point is, id rather see you change your ATF with dino once a year rather than do synethetic every 1.5-2 years. Synthetic ATF 1 per year, probably overkill but you cant be too safe...

Royal Purple not recommended by Fred Palmer, our oil guy with a funny accent.

In MN winter, all synthetic will be much better on cold starts and in low temperature operation.

That's what i've heard, and thats 50% of the reason for switching to synthetic.

You havent felt a dying transmission until you drive in -20 weather.

Hi, I want to know where can I find the procedure on how to change the ATF and differential gear oil because I have searched around and could not find any information. Thanks for the direction.

I couldn't find it either. ? Maybe our resident expert with the search button will chime in here and save us all form our stupidity and laziness.

Hi, Thank you for the information, it really helps alot. I also want to know where exactly is the ATF drain bolt, I know a bolt under the driver's side, I don't have a owner manual or service manual. Also is there a ATF filler bolt in the engine compartment? Thanks.

Drain plug will obvious on the transmission pan. The fill tube will against the firewall, on the passenger side (on a 97 at least). It should have a dipstick similar to the engine oil dipstick.

For the differential, try this thread:
